How do we study and understand the history of Europe and Europeans? In the past this was often done from a European or national (European) perspective. Relations between Europe and the rest of the world were generally considered as a separate field and often understood through a diffusionist model: as Europe influencing other areas. With the rise of global history over the last two decades, there is now an exciting literature that explores ways of understanding Europe and European history as part of a globalizing world. This summer school engages this literature by considering various forms of European history (political, social, intellectual, European integration history etc.), situating them in a global context and asking what this means for how we understand Europe.
In order to put the challenge of globalizing European history into practice, this summer school includes keynotes and seminars by high profile historians working on global perspectives on various aspects of European history and it offers workshops by for example digital history experts and museum specialists to broaden the methodological tool box of the participants.
Target audience
ResMA with an interest in European history, PhD researchers.
ECTS
ResMA: 3-5 ECTS
Workshops and seminars
The RSPH 2024 summer school offers both seminars and workshops. The seminars will familiarize students with key, inspirational research, debates, theories and concepts. The lecturers introduce key insights, guide the discussion and invite students to consider the application of these insights to their own fields of interest.
In preparation for the seminars, all students read literature and complete assignments. The students are divided into groups and each group of students prepares a 10-15 minute presentation in which it introduces key insights and topics of debate drawn from an extra body of literature. There will be some time reserved during the summer school to finalize the presentations, but the groups are advised to coordinate beforehand to prepare the presentation.
The workshops are dedicated to working in specific settings, with specific source types/ (digital) corpora, or applying specific methodologies. In preparation for these seminars and workshops, students read literature and complete assignments.
