Two events with Professor Anthony Bogues – 28 and 31 October

28 October 2025 @ 13:30 - 16:00

The Graduate School of Humanities (VU) and the International Institute of Social History are pleased to invite you to come to the VU for two events with Professor Anthony Bogues.

Seminar: Fanon at 100
Date: Tuesday, 28 October 13:30-16:00
Location: Main building VU, Kerkzaal, 15th floor

Frantz Fanon is considered by many to be the seminal thinker and activist of the mid 20th century period of decolonization. His writings and political praxis raised new issues around politics and human life. This seminar will work through the significance of Fanon for the contemporary moment. It will argue that his conceptions of freedom and the human are some of the critical elements for reconstituting critical thought about the possibilities of a different world today .

The lecture will be followed by a round table where VU-researchers Guno Jones, Susan Legêne and Patricia Schor will discuss the significance of Fanon for their work, and by a Q&A.

Public lecture: Illiberalism, Violence and the Politics of a New Conjuncture
Date: Friday, 31 October 15:00-17:00
Location: Main building 14A-33

Neoliberalism governed our contemporary moment. Today that social and political frame for human life is being replaced in many places by the rule of authoritarian regimes. This talk will explore the relationship between liberalism and illiberalism. It will review how illiberalism was the underside of  the liberal project and grapple with the features of  the emergent illiberalism as the making of a new conjuncture.
