Deadline Application Master class prof. dr. Anthony Bogues on the Radical Thought of Sylvia Wynter

On 7 December, Prof. dr. Anthony Bogues (Brown University) will give a Master Class intended for PhD candidates and Research Master students on the radical thought of Sylvia Wynter. The Masterclass is organized by Prof. dr. Pepijn Brandon and the Graduate School of the Humanities, and will take place at the VU, from 14-17h in room Forum 4.

About the Masterclass 

Caribbean writer and theorist Sylvia Wynter belongs to a tradition of radical Caribbean thought and from this tradition has been central in attempts to reread the figure of the human, its significance, and its meanings. Her work has become a key point of reference in debates on colonialism and its legacies. This master class will focus on two of her texts, that will be made available to the participants:

  • 1492: A new world view
  • On How We Mistook the Map for the Territory 

How to apply 

The Master Class is open for PhD candidates and Research Master students. Those who wish to participate are asked to send a brief (1-2 pages) note to the VU Graduate School of Humanities, graduate.school.fgw@vu.nl, describing their PhD project or (intended) Master Thesis project. If you are already familiar with it, please also include a few lines on the way your research topic connects to the themes of Sylvia Wynter’s work. Please send your applications before 1 December. The number of participants is limited to 15 persons, who will be selected on a first-come, first-serve basis.

About prof. Anthony Bogues 

Professor Bogues is Asa Messer Professor of Humanities and Critical Theory, Professor of Africana Studies, and director of the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice at Brown University. He currently holds a guest professorship at the Vrije Universiteit and the International Institute of Social History, where he works on a new biography of Sylvia Wynter.
