Location: Paderborn, Germany
This two-day international workshop aims to reassess the quality and agency of the Spanish Netherlands as a state in the late seventeenth century. Organised by the Chair for Flemish History in collaboration with the Belgienzentrum of the University of Paderborn, the event brings together researchers from across Europe to explore how the Spanish Netherlands navigated the complex realities of early modern power politics, war, and state formation.
Six sessions will feature scholars from Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Germany. Through focused case studies and broader theoretical reflections, the workshop aims to generate new insights into the mechanisms and challenges of early modern state formation in one of Europe’s most contested and interconnected regions.
People, interested in taking part in the discussions are more than welcome to join.
