What
This two-day conference, organized by the Research School Political History, offers all PhD candidates and research master students working on the history of power and politics a platform to present their research to fellow PhDs and senior researchers from Dutch and Flemish universities. The scope of the conference is deliberately broad in order to transcend the boundaries of periods, methods, and institutional affiliations. Two keynotes will address methodological and disciplinary problems.
Participants will give a ten-minute presentation on a particular aspect of their work. In this way, they will be able to highlight a more specific topic, concept, question or source type they have been working on or a specific problem they are struggling with, as opposed to outlining their entire research project. This will provide the panel sessions with ample time and opportunity both for specific feedback and for general discussion. Moreover, during the conference participants will take part in workshops that aim to improve valuable skill sets in areas like specific research methods, academic writing, and the presentation of work in progress.
During the first evening of the conference, the RSPH-PhD council will organize a social event, which will provide an opportunity to continue discussions and to foster informal contacts between historians in diverse stages of their research and career.
We will conclude the two-day conference with a session on the meaning and challenges of writing a book for a wider audience. This part of the program (which will be in Dutch) intends to give a glimpse into the opportunities of publishing your dissertation and into your career after you have submitted your dissertation.
