SUMMARY:Global Political Thought Seminar and Amsterdam Medieval Seminar: Free Speech in Post-Revolutionary Vietnam
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 17 February 2026\, 16:00 -18:00\, Bushuis Room  BH E1.02 \nKevin Pham (UvA) (https://www.uva.nl/en/profile/p/h/k.d.pham/k.d.pham.html) \nIn 1954\, the government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) defeated the French military at Dien Bien Phu\, thereby ending French colonialism in Vietnam (1858-1954). But soon after achieving national liberation\, the same government became a new source of oppression in the newly independent state\, or so argued a group of about fifty intellectuals proclaiming loyalty to the DRV. This talk presents the ideas of these intellectuals\, participants in what has become known as the Nhan Van – Giai Phammovement (1956-1960). They criticized their government for becoming dogmatic\, authoritarian\, and harming the interests of the people they claimed to serve. Interestingly\, they argued that the key to long lasting freedom in Vietnam is freedom of speech. But rather than defend freedom of speech in terms of individual entitlement as we tend to do in the West\, they defend it as a collective—rather than individual—right\, arguing that it can help the government redress mistakes\, identify what is good and bad for the people\, and create a socialism that celebrates human diversity. Their theories of free speech draw on Confucian traditions of remonstrance and Marxism\, thus offering a different\, more global perspective on free speech.

Johan van Merriënboer on Wednesday 3 December 2025 at Radboud University Nijmegen. (R)MA-students\, PhD-students and early career scholars are particularly welcome to attend. Bush to Dutch Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers in the Oval Office on 9 May 1989: \n‘Chancellor Kohl cannot be allowed to drive NATO.’ \nAt that moment\, NATO was deeply divided over the modernization of short-range nuclear weapons. Meanwhile\, Western leaders were reconsidering their stance toward Mikhail Gorbachev’s reform agenda and his growing popularity in West Germany under Chancellor Helmut Kohl. Bush’s words reflect the tensions within the alliance that framed the high-stakes diplomacy of the period. \nIn this lecture\, dr. Van Merriënboer will show how Lubbers positioned the Netherlands as a mediator between the United States and West Germany. Drawing on archival research and Lubbers’s memoirs\, he will explore how Dutch diplomacy helped shape a new American strategy toward Europe and the Soviet Union. Data management has become an essential part of doing research in the humanities\, whether you work with archival materials\, oral histories\, or born-digital sources. This workshop introduces participants to key principles of data management: how to store\, connect\, and analyze data in ways that make your research both sustainable and transparent. \nAs a practical case\, we will work with Nodegoat\, a web-based research environment designed specifically for the humanities and widely used by an international research community. Nodegoat allows scholars to build customized datasets and offers relational\, spatial\, and chronological modes of analysis. \nThe workshop\, given by Nodegoat developers Pim van Bree and Geert Kessels\, combines broader discussions on data management in the humanities with hands-on training. DESCRIPTION:The Antifa-movement polarizes. For some\, it makes an important contribution to the fight against right-wing extremism\, while for others it jeopardizes the state’s monopoly on the use of force and thus makes it a threat to democracy from the left. \nWhat are the key characteristics of this radical left-wing movement that has been so influential in German society? In his recent book Antifa: Portrait einer linksradikalen Bewegung\, Richard Rohrmoser traces the historical development of the multifaceted anti-fascist movement from its beginnings in the 1920s and outlines the tensions between civic engagement\, protest culture\, and radical violence that it finds itself in today. SUMMARY:Book launch 15 October: Prussia at Crossroads: State\, Society and Monarchy in Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Prussia in the nineteenth century was a state and society perpetually on the verge of crisis. It was victorious in the Napoleonic Wars but could not undo the consequences of the upheaval of the preceding three decades. Instead\, what followed was a state constantly concerned about the return of revolutionary fervour or renewed attempts at uprooting the social order and its institutions. Religious beliefs and new political ideologies were seen to challenge the authority of the state and its key actors. Conversely\, as Prussian society transformed socially\, economically\, culturally\, and technologically\, more groups sought access to the political process and asserted themselves in an expanding political sphere. How\, then\, did Prussian authorities respond to anything they saw as a threat to their positions and powers? \nFour books will be presented which provide substantial new answers to this question by looking at different examples from nineteenth-century Prussia. On 14 October\, Christopher Clark (University of Cambridge) will present his new book\, which looks at how local authorities responded to a social and religious scandal in 1830s Königsberg\, which tapped directly in the state’s fears for renewed revolutionary upheaval. The following day\, Susanne Bauer (Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities)\, Jan Markert (Trier University) and Frederik Frank Sterkenburgh (Utrecht University) will present their books on how the Hohenzollern monarchy sought to establish itself as the imperial dynasty in the decades preceding and following the 1848 revolution and the challenges posed by nationalism\, liberalism\, the calls for a constitution and the emergence of mass media. This was a challenge for which a monarch always required his consort and family as well. \nTaken together\, these four books provide distinct new insights in how nineteenth-century Prussian and German history unfolded but are not exclusive to the German lands: how states responded to a rapidly changing society was a challenge which authorities faced across Europe and beyond. SUMMARY:Webinar: Neem kennis van de herijking van de Normen voor historici
DESCRIPTION:In 2023 publiceerde het KNHG een ethische code\, genaamd Normen voor historici. Bij de lancering destijds is nadrukkelijk gesteld dat deze code een ‘levend document’ beoogde te zijn. Inmiddels is het document dan ook aangevuld.  \nIn 2024-2025 heeft een ad hoc-werkgroep\, onder leiding van Henk te Velde (Bestuur KNHG/Universiteit Leiden)\, een aanvulling op de Normen voor historici opgesteld. Deze aanvulling zorgt ervoor dat de Normen voor historici zich constructief verhouden tot drie grote thema’s in de wetenschapsethische discussie van dit moment: informed consent\, privacy en open data. Dit is belangrijk met het oog op ethiekcommissies die van documenten als deze verwachten dat ze uitleggen wat deze onderwerpen concreet betekenen.   \nIn dit webinar krijgt u een korte toelichting geven op deze drie thema’s en hoe die een plaats hebben gekregen in de ethische code. Laura van Hasselt (docent-onderzoeker Universiteit van Amsterdam): Het monument voor Kamp Atatürk\n16:00-16:30 discussie\n16:30-einde Nazit \nClé Lesger\, Machtsverhoudingen in de vroegmoderne Hollandse stad\nEen opvallend kenmerk van vroegmoderne steden is dat de machtsverhoudingen tussen sociale klassen daar vele honderden jaren vrijwel onveranderd bleven. Pas met de opkomst van sociale bewegingen in de loop van de negentiende eeuw zouden die verhoudingen fundamenteel ter discussie worden gesteld en werden ook de eerste aarzelende stappen gezet naar een meer inclusieve samenleving.\nIn mijn onderzoek naar de vroegmoderne Hollandse steden betoog ik dat toe-eigening van de stedelijke ruimte heeft bijgedragen aan de continuïteit van die vroegmoderne machtsverhoudingen. Concreet vraag ik aandacht voor het effect van de heel duurzame residentiële toe-eigening van de stedelijke ruimte\, voor de vluchtige toe-eigening tijdens publieke executies en uitbarstingen van collectief geweld én voor het effect van discursieve toe-eigening van de stedelijke ruimte in vroegmoderne teksten en op kaarten en afbeeldingen. In combinatie wekten ze bij alle sociale klassen de indruk dat de bestaande machtsverhoudingen vanzelfsprekend waren en niet vatbaar voor discussie\, een indruk die ook deel ging uitmaken van wat Bourdieu de habitus van sociale klassen heeft genoemd. \nBob Pierik\, Een brakke stad: hydro-historie van Amsterdam\nDe geschiedenis van Amsterdam is ook zeker een geschiedenis van water. Van oorsprong ligt Amsterdam niet alleen aan de zee\, maar eigenlijk ook ín zee. Bob Pierik bespreekt in deze presentatie een aantal factoren waarop water de stedelijke ruimte van vroegmodern Amsterdam vormde. In het havengebied waren delen van het IJ binnen de stad gevoegd.\nMaar hoe functioneerde dat\, en hoe zagen alledaagse praktijken eruit? Het brakke water was naast een deel van de stedelijke ruimte\, ook een bron van uitdagingen. Door de brakheid van grondwater en oppervlaktewater moesten voor drinkwater andere voorzieningen worden getroffen. Het resultaat was een uitgebreid en complex systeem om de inwoners van Amsterdam van drinkwater te voorzien. Dit systeem liep uiteen van duizenden regenwaterbakken tot waterschuiten die het water bij Weesp ophaalden. De verdeling van drinkwater werd lang niet evenredig verdeeld tussen verschillende huishoudens\, en deze ongelijkheid van water kan in kaart worden gebracht. \nLaura van Hasselt\, Het monument voor Kamp Atatürk\nDe Volkskrant beschreef het monument in Amsterdam Noord eens als een wat groot uitgevallen ‘grafsteen in een troosteloze omgeving’. Het sobere gedenkteken aan de Klaprozenweg is inderdaad weinig sfeervol of monumentaal. De meeste Amsterdammers hebben er nog nooit van gehoord. Toch stond van 1966 tot 1978 op deze plek een levendig woonoord voor Turkse gastarbeiders: Kamp Atatürk.\nDe toenmalige bewoners werkten in de fabrieken van Ford of bij de NDSM-scheepswerven. Ze sliepen met zijn vieren op een kamer in een van de 34 houten barakken. Toen het woonoord in 1978 werd afgebroken kreeg de Amsterdams-Turkse gemeenschap dit monument als aandenken van de gemeente.\nHet is daarmee het oudste gastarbeidermonument van Nederland. Maar wat begon als een eerbetoon aan arbeidsmigranten werd in de loop der jaren steeds meer een eerbetoon aan Kemal Atatürk\, de stichter van de Turkse Republiek. Wie of wat herdenken we eigenlijk op deze plaats van herinnering? En wat zegt dit over het monument voor álle gastarbeiders\, dat de stad Amsterdam wil gaan bouwen?

Since then\, Turkish- and Arab-Germans have been considered as the prime obstacles to German national reconciliation with its Nazi past\, a status shared to a lesser degree by Germans from the formerly socialist East Germany. \nIn her lecture\, Esra Özyürek explains that the German government\, German NGOs\, and Muslim minority groups have begun to design Holocaust education and anti-Semitism prevention programs specifically tailored for Muslim immigrants and refugees\, so that they\, too\, can learn the lessons of the Holocaust and embrace Germany’s most important postwar democratic political values. \nAfter the lecture\, there will be a Q&A with the speaker. \nMore information and registration.

DESCRIPTION:Een van de moeilijkste dingen voor een historicus is om weerstand te bieden aan de verleiding van bekende resultaten. Om een tijd en plaats te reconstrueren die complex\, omstreden en niet-gescript was\, net als de onze. Toen niemand wist wat er ging gebeuren. Toen er veel toekomsten mogelijk waren. \nDe bouw van een monument voor Raymond Westerling bijvoorbeeld\, de beruchte kapitein van het Nederlandse koloniale leger in Indonesië (KNIL) in de jaren 1940. Zo’n monument bestaat niet. Nog. \nIn deze lezing onderzoekt hoogleraar Wereldpolitieke Geschiedenis Susie Protschky twee momenten in de recente geschiedenis\, het ene in 1950\, het andere in 2023\, waarop een monument voor de omstreden Westerling denkbaar leek. \nSommigen in Nederland zien hem tegenwoordig als een oorlogsmisdadiger die verantwoordelijk is voor de moord op drie- tot vierduizend mensen in Sulawesi tijdens de Indonesische Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog (1945-1949). SUMMARY:Jaarcongres Werkgroep Zeventiende Eeuw: Familie\, verwantschap en dynastie
DESCRIPTION:Het jaarcongres van de Werkgroep Zeventiende Eeuw richt zich dit jaar op familie. Familie bepaalde je plaats in de samenleving en verwantschapsrelaties waren essentieel bij het verwerven van status\, middelen\, banen\, en kennis. ‘Familie’ speelde bovendien in verschillende lagen van de samenleving een centrale rol in de overdracht van kennis\, kapitaal en netwerken van generatie op generatie. De sprekers op dit congres zullen uiteenlopende thema’s behandelen\, zoals genderrollen in dynastieke representatie\, de cruciale rol van vrouwen in economische en politieke familieverbanden\, en transnationale handelsnetwerken. Ook staan dynastieke praktijken in koloniale contexten en het belang van verwantschap bij identiteitsvorming en erfgoed centraal. \nOm deel te kunnen nemen\, is lidmaatschap van de Werkgroep Zeventiende Eeuw vereist.
