DESCRIPTION:http://www.create.humanities.uva.nl/events/create-digital-history-workshop/ \nThe upcoming CREATE Digital History Workshop will take place on 19 October and focuses on the history of migration and professions using various tools created by CLARIAH (Common Lab Research Infrastructure for the Arts and the Humanities). \nRichard Zijdeman will demonstrate how historians can make use of linked data. Querying linked data remains a challenge to many scholars. To facilitate the exploration of linked data\, CLARIAH created GRLC\, a tool that allows researchers to share queries across the web and enable anyone to execute predefined queries (or adapt them to their own research question). \nLiliana Melgar will introduce the Media Suite\, a research environment which aims to serve the needs of media scholars\, historians and other scholars who use audiovisual media. \nThe media suite facilitates the analysis of audiovisual collections and their contextual data (such as Program Guides) by providing scholars with a wide array of tools for corpus selection\, search and annotation. \nThe workshop is free and open to everyone. Center for Political History \nFelixArchief 18 – 20 October 2017 \nDuring the last decades\, political historians have increasingly focused on the evolution of political consciousness among the “common people” during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In that process they have often made use of all-encompassing notions such as politicization\, democratization and nationalization. These have in common that they suggest an increasing commitment of a growing number of citizens in the political life of the nation\, but because these concepts are so general and linear\, they are hard to grapple with. Do they refer to an increase in consciousness and/or agency? Apart from the difficulty of measuring these processes\, one can also ask whether they necessarily occur in parallel. A more active participation in electoral processes\, for example\, does not necessarily entail a greater commitment to political values\, and membership of political associations can be inspired as much by individual calculations as by concern for the common good. \nThe conference “Subaltern political knowledges” intends to take one step back and ask a question which should precede all discussion of politicization\, democratization and nationalization of the masses: what did people actually know about politics? In our quest for an answer\, we will primarily focus on ‘subaltern’ groups in society\, i.e. on people that neither occupied a position of formal or informal power in society nor were able to make their voice heard in public debates. We aim at discovering the knowledge these people expressed about political institutions\, personalities\, values and ideologies. While doing so\, we pay attention to both the temporal and the spatial framework of this knowledge. Was it situated primarily at a local or national level\, or did it extend to international politics? And did people only refer to politics of their own time\, or did they evoke politicians and/or political systems of the past? Did they engage in comparisons between the past and the present? \nApart from the contents of the political knowledge of the subalterns\, this conference also investigates its sources. Did these subalterns refer to the newspapers and other mass media\, were they informed by electoral campaigns\, were they inspired by informal talk with neighbors or relatives\, was membership of associations a decisive factor? \nThirdly and finally\, the conference intends to address the question how people acted upon their political knowledge. Did they use it in order to further their personal interests\, or to support institutional or societal change? \nThe challenge of this conference will be to bring together a broad range of papers in which these questions are addressed empirically\, preferably on the basis of sources created by subalterns (whether or not addressing members of elite groups). The geographical scope of the conference is emphatically global\, and we invite scholars to submit proposals on cases from all over the world. They should be situated\, however\, in contexts where some form of institutionalized democratic politics was taking shape\, but where the distribution of political knowledge was not yet facilitated by a powerful mass media such as television. The focus of the conference\, therefore\, will be on the period between the last decades of the eighteenth century and the 1950s. \nRather than offering grand narratives about the increase or decrease of political knowledge\, we aim to historicize the theme\, investigating how in diverse historical contexts certain types of political knowledge correlated with categories such as gender\, age\, ethnicity\, urbanity\, profession\, literacy\, sociability and electoral status (voter vs. non-voter). By juxtaposing and comparing these micro-historical investigations\, we hope to be able to assess the relative strength and recurrence of these correlations. SUMMARY:Bijeenkomst goede poster ontwerpen in het kader van congres 'The State of the Art in the History of Politics'
DESCRIPTION:Een belangrijk doel van het congres is een staalkaart te presenteren van onderzoeksvragen en thema´s waar politiek-historici zich op dit moment mee bezighouden. Een fors deel van het onderzoekswerk wordt gedaan door promovendi. Dat maakt dat zowel de OPG als het organiserend comité de aanwezigheid en deelname van promovendi en ook research masters zeer belangrijk vinden. \nTijdens het congres zal er daarom een prominente plaats worden ingeruimd waar je\, door middel van een posterpresentatie\, jouw onderzoeksproject kan delen met een breder publiek. Een posterpresentatie is de ideale manier om je (voorlopige) onderzoeksbevindingen kernachtig te presenteren en biedt bovendien een aanleiding om je eigen netwerk onder politiek-historici uit te bouwen. \nDe posters zullen gedurende het congres tentoongesteld worden\, en vormen een integraal onderdeel van het programma. Omdat wij het belangrijk vinden dat de promovendileden van de OPG aanwezig zijn op deze dagen\, willen we je zoveel mogelijk tegemoet komen in de voorbereidingen van een poster. Daarom zal er op \n21 september 2017\, van 15.30 – 17.30 uur in Utrecht (Kromme Nieuwe Gracht 80 zaal 006) \neen bijeenkomst georganiseerd worden waarin we aan de slag gaan met het ontwerpen van een goede poster. Bovendien vergoed de organisatie van het congres de drukkosten van je poster tot een bedrag van €15\,-. Na afloop is er een borrel. \nZowel het bestuur als het organiserend comité kan niet genoeg benadrukken hoe belangrijk de aanwezigheid van de OPG-promovendi op het congres is. De nadruk ligt op de twintigste eeuw en de voertalen zijn Duits\, Nederlands en Engels. De tiende workshop van de Werkgroep vindt plaats in Leeuwarden\, Culturele Hoofdstad van het jaar 2018. Gastheer is de Fryske Akademy (FA)\, een instituut van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademy van Wetenschappen. Het Duitsland Instituut Amsterdam en het N.W. Posthumus Instituut treden op als sponsoren. \nFormat van de workshop \nDe workshop wil ten eerste ruimte bieden aan nieuwe projecten op het gebied van de Werkgroep Duits-Nederlandse Geschiedenis (WDNG). Het gaat hier bijvoorbeeld om de jongere geschiedenis van vervlechting\, waarneming\, relaties\, transfer en conflict tussen Duitsland en Nederland in de 20ste eeuw. Hiermee reflecteert de werkgroep op het programma van Leeuwarden als Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa. \nThematischer Schwerpunkt \nKultur wird gegenwärtig als bedeutender Motor ökonomischer Entwicklung gesehen. Dies gilt sowohl für die Geschichts- als auch für die Sozialwissenschaften. Aus dem interdisziplinären Feld der Urban Studies ist 2002 das einflussreiche Buch The rise of the creative class hervorgegangen. Autor Richard Florida zeigt darin\, dass die Konzentration kreativer Akteure in Städten zu einer hohen Produktivität führt: Das durch die „kreative Klasse” geschaffene\, innovative Milieu wirkt anziehend auf die Wirtschaft. Auch im weltweiten Wettbewerb um Besucher\, Firmen und Touristen investieren Städte und Regionen immer öfter in die gezielte Entwicklung ihrer Images und Repräsentationen. \nHistoriker haben darauf hingewiesen\, dass der Einsatz von Kultur als Mittel ökonomischer Entwicklung mit Machtverhältnissen und Aspekten politischer Hegemonie zusammenhängt. Dieser aktuelle und kritische Zugang verdient es\, mit einer erweiterten Perspektive und auch vergleichend verfolgt zu werden. So wird Kultur in zunehmendem Maße als ein Faktor gesehen\, der auch wirtschaftliche Stadt- und Regionalentwicklung erklären und/oder beeinflussen kann. \nCase Studies aus Deutschland und den Benelux-Ländern \nDer Workshop in Leeuwarden beschränkt sich auf Städte und Regionen in Deutschland und den Benelux-Ländern. Seine zentralen Fragestellungen kreisen um den Begriff creative communities:  Welche Akteure zählen hierzu? Wie setzen diese Gemeinschaften (lokale) Kultur als Mittel ökonomischer Entwicklung ein? Oder sind sie vielmehr ein Produkt dieser Entwicklung? Wie können wir den Erfolg dieses Phänomens bewerten\, und was sind die Schattenseiten? Gibt es Unterschiede\, Gemeinsamkeiten und Verbindungen zwischen Städten und Regionen aus Deutschland und den Benelux-Staaten? \nThematisch zwaartepunt \nCultuur wordt als een belangrijke motor van economische ontwikkeling gezien. Dit geldt voor de historische wetenschap\, maar evengoed voor de sociale wetenschap. Vanuit het interdisciplinaire veld van urban studies werd in 2002 het invloedrijke boek The rise of the creative class gepubliceerd. De auteur Richard Florida betoogde dat de concentratie van creatieve geesten in steden tot een hoge productiveit leidde. Zo wordt in toenemende mate cultuur gezien als een factor die stedelijke en regionale ontwikkeling kan verklaren en/of beïnvloeden. \nCase-studies uit Duitsland en de Benelux-landen \nDe workshop in Leeuwarden beperkt zich tot ontwikkelingen in Duitsland en de Benelux-landen. Vragen die centraal staan\, bewegen zich rondom het begrip ‘creative communities’: welke actoren kunnen hiertoe gerekend kunnen worden? Hoe zetten deze gemeenschappen cultuur in als middel voor economische ontwikkeling? Of zijn ze er een product van? Hoe kunnen we het succes hiervan beoordelen\, en wat zijn de schaduwzijden? Zijn er verschillen\, overeenkomsten en verbindingen tussen steden en regio’s uit Duitsland en de Benelux? \nHistorische Fallstudien können sich zum Beispiel auf folgende Themen beziehen: \n\nCultural Industries in Städten und Regionen\n„Festivalisierung” von lokaler und internationaler Kulturpolitik (Kulturhauptstadt Europas)\nCultural Heritage als Ressource und Instrument der Stadtentwicklung\nKonstruktionen und Kampagnen städtischer und regionaler Images\nLokale und regionale Strategiepläne für Kultur und Tourismus\n\nEinladung \nDie Einsendefrist für Vorschläge zur allgemeinen deutsch-niederländischen Geschichte oder zum Schwerpunktthema creative communities in cities and regions ist der 1. November 2017. Tagungssprachen sind Deutsch\, Englisch und Niederländisch. Der Arbeitskreis möchte insbesondere junge Wissenschaftler\, wie Promovenden und Post-Docs\, aber auch Masterstudenten von beiden Seiten der Grenze zur Teilnahme ermutigen. DESCRIPTION:31 July – 6 August 2017\nThe fourth Bergen-Belsen International Summer School\, which will take place at the Bergen-Belsen Memorial from the 31st of July until the 6th of August 2017\, will deal with memory and remembrance in a comparative perspective. We aim to gather international Master and PhD students from different disciplines\, but with a particular interest in topics in Holocaust-\, Genocide- and Memory Studies. The programme will consist of lectures\, workshops\, tours of the Memorial and an excursion to Hanover.\nContent\nDuring the Summer School\, we want to offer the participants the opportunity to both learn more about the specifics of Holocaust remembrance at the Bergen-Belsen Memorial and discuss various topics related to Comparative Genocide- and Memory studies. We will focus on questions such as:\nWhat perspectives and experiences do visitors of memorials bring along and how does this influence their perception of a historical site?\nDoes competitive victimhood play a role in remembrance and if so\, to what extent?\nHow and in what context could or should we compare mass atrocities?\nWhat are different strategies of transitional justice and how successful have they proven to be?\nWhat are the challenges and opportunities of social media in educational work at memorials?\nProgramme\nThis year’s Summer School will consist of an introductory lecture by Kjell Anderson (Leiden/Amsterdam). He will provide a theoretical framework\, by elaborating on the (rather new) field of Comparative Genocide Studies and will present his research on the criminology of genocide. The first days feature guided tours in the Memorial’s permanent exhibition and on the former camp grounds. This will be complemented by a workshop on aspects of concept and design in museology by Sytse Wierenga (Barcelona) and Stephanie Billib (Bergen-Belsen). Thijs Bouwknegt\, who is currently a researcher at Netherlands Institute for War-\, Holocaust- and Genocide Studies (Amsterdam)\, will offer his insight on processes of transitional justice in (amongst others) Sub-Saharan Africa from his experiences as a journalist\, historian and jurist.\nThis year’s Summer School also includes presentations by early career scholars and young professionals on topics ranging from remembrance of the Armenian genocide to concepts of competitive victimhood in remembering the Holocaust in the former Socialistic Federative Republic of Yugoslavia. These sessions will provide an opportunity to discuss the participants’ own work in an open environment. The young scholars presenting their work were found through a Call for Papers. All other participants will have the opportunity to actively engage by commenting lectures\, writing blogposts and moderating the final discussion.\nDuring a day trip to Hanover\, the group will visit the Ahlem Memorial. This former Jewish horticultural school first served as an assembly point for deportations and was later a “police replacement prison”.\nRegistration\nThe working language of the Bergen-Belsen International Summer School is English. The participants’ language skills must be sufficient to enable them to understand the preparatory texts\, follow the lectures and tours and actively participate in the discussions. Participants must be 18 or older.\nAccommodation will be in double rooms. The costs for the programme\, accommodation and meals will be borne by the Bergen-Belsen Memorial. Participants are responsible for arranging and paying for their own arrival and departure as well as any necessary visas. DESCRIPTION:De decennia aan weerszijden van 1800 vormen in de geschiedenis van Nederland en België een periode van grote politiek-maatschappelijke transformaties. Het historisch onderzoek richt zich doorgaans vooral op die veranderingen\, zeker wanneer het gaat over het thema burgerschap. Zo wordt algemeen aangenomen dat rond 1800 de transitie plaatsvond van stadsburgerschap naar staatsburgerschap. \nHet congres ‘Nieuwe staat\, nieuwe burgers?’ richt zich juist op wat er niet veranderde\, op de continuïteit in burgerschapspraktijken. Bleven er in de negentiende eeuw niet ook oudere\, lokale en regionale vormen van burgerschap bestaan\, en omgekeerd\, was burgerschap in de achttiende eeuw wel altijd zo lokaal gericht? \nDe sprekers doen allen onderzoek naar continuïteiten in burgerschapspraktijken en kijken daarbij speciaal voor dit congres zowel naar het Noorden als naar het Zuiden. DESCRIPTION:Workshop with Moshik Temkin\, Associate Professor of History and Public Policy\, Harvard Kennedy School \nOrganised by the Amsterdam Centre for Political Thought with the generous support of ACCESS Europe \nAbstract\nThis workshop addresses the history of the rise\, over the course of the twentieth century but especially in the Cold War period\, of interconnected law\, policy\, politics\, and practice that allowed the United States\, France\, and other Western governments to monitor\, control\, or stop the international political activism of citizens and groups\, as a means to solidify control and leadership of the global political arena. It grapples with issues that have captured public and political attention in recent years\, from the so-called Surveillance State to the continued use of border and travel restrictions by many countries. Lastly\, it focuses on the ways in which the travel control and surveillance policies of the Cold War era have carried over to our own day\, particularly in the era of Trump\, Brexit\, and the so-called retreat from the Global. DESCRIPTION:http://rhei.revues.org \nSpecial issue on “Juvenile Sexualities\, 19th and 20th Centuries”\, edited by Véronique Blanchard and Régis Revenin\, issue no. 20\, October 2018. \nPossible Research Themes. \nOver the past 40 years\, the history of sexuality (practices and representations) and the history of youth (both ‘normal’ and ‘troubled’) have generated a significant body of work in the social sciences. Nevertheless\, studies on the intersection between youth and sexuality remain rare[1] and even rarer still when it comes to adolescent life beyond the school environment. This special journal issue proposes to fill that historical void by not focusing exclusively on youth in school and by attempting to build a bridge between different youth-oriented institutions and educational policies. With gender-differentiated socialization as its backdrop\, this issue will examine the history of sexuality through the following prisms: youth justice (i.e. reformative education\, judicial youth protection services)\, child protection and the broader themes of special education and social work\, social assistance to children\, prevention\, urban policies\, scouting and youth movements and organized leisure (summer camps). The issue will consider the viewpoints of institutions\, professionals and families as much as those of youth placed in care or under supervision. Social history (practices)\, cultural history (representations) and the necessary intersection between the two will serve as the methodological substrate. \nThis call for papers covers the entire period of the 19th and 20th centuries and all geographical areas (France\, Europe and the world). Articles dealing with the world beyond Europe would be particularly welcome\, as would those coming from disciplines other than history\, provided they adopt a historic or diachronic perspective and stem from an analysis of primary sources (archives\, printed materials\, field researches). Finally\, we encourage analysis of the intersectionality generated by imbricated power relations related to age\, class\, gender\, race\, religion… \nProposals dealing with any of the following themes are welcome\, though not exclusively: \n\nLinks between sexuality and body (gestures and attitudes)\, appearances\, words and gender socialization\, as much from the standpoints of the adults concerned as the youth in care or under supervision.\nThe content and methods of formal out-of-school sexual education (specialized associations and organizations\, pedagogical approaches such as gender-segregated or co-ed care and learning\, adult discourses and representations of teenage sexuality\, etc.) and informal sex education (peers\, families\, etc.).\nSexual categorization\, hierarchization and identities.\n‘Deviant’ sexualities (homosexualities\, prostitution\, etc.).
