SUMMARY:Workshop on ‘Researching (Post)colonial Migration’
DESCRIPTION:With presentations by Peo Hansen (Linköping University)\, Olivier Esteves (Lille III University)\, and Johannes Paulmann (Leibniz-Institut für Europäische Geschichte\, Mainz) \nOn Friday\, 19 January 2018\, Peter van Dam and Liz Buettner of the Modern History Research Group at the University of Amsterdam invite you to a workshop on ‘Researching (Post)colonial Migration’ that features presentations by three leading international scholars. \nHow has decolonisation influenced the ways in which European citizens and residents\, old and new\, approached their lives? This workshop explores the ways in which the legacy of empires and their end has shaped migration and responses to it in post-war Europe. What can we learn about colonialism and its aftermath by looking at the lives and experiences of migrants? How have states attempted to regulate migration individually and as members of the European Union?  How have people in Europe reacted to these developments?  During this workshop\, the featured speakers will shed light on these questions and address key themes and prevalent approaches. This will be followed by a wider discussion based on the audience’s questions and reflections of the participants. \nAll are welcome\, but please register beforehand by e-mailing p.h.vandam@uva.nl by Tuesday 16 January.

SUMMARY:Call for papers: International Conference "Thinking Sex after the Great War"
DESCRIPTION:International Conference “Thinking Sex after the Great War”\nDeadline 15/12/2017 (Conference 17-18 October 2018\, Brussels) \nThe last few decades\, the multifaceted relations between gender and the First World War have been explored in various historical studies. Historians have analysed the role of gender in the run-up to the outbreak of the war and in the war propaganda\, they have depicted the gendered experience of the war by soldiers and civilians\, and probed the ways in which the war challenged and blurred existing gender roles. Yet they have also described how the war in the end often seemed to reinforce gender stereotypes. Throughout this rich literature\, the question of the impact of the war on gender relations often resurfaces\, although most scholars seem to agree that a definitive and general answer on the ‘net result’ of the war in terms of increasing or decreasing equality\, is hard to reach and probably beside the point.\nThe organizers of this conference invite historians to reflect on the impact of the Great War on gender from the specific angle of learned discourses. Intellectuals\, philosophers\, social scientists\, physiologists\, psychologists and scientists witnessed and experienced the war personally. Some of them were integrated in the military war machine (either as ‘common’ soldiers\, officers or experts) and were relocated\, while others stayed at home and continued their jobs\, or registered themselves as ‘conscientious objectors’ and explicitly opposed the war. Like other citizens\, they lost family members and friends\, experienced love and desire\, excitement and disillusionment\, enthusiasm and indignation. These experiences inevitably impacted upon their view of society\, human nature and the role of the sexes and sexuality. The conference will focus on the trajectories and experiences of intellectuals before\, during and after the war\, and how the war reinforced\, challenged or changed research agendas\, paradigms and knowledge about gender and sexuality. \nTopics of interest include\, but are not limited to: \n\nthe links between sexuality\, aggression and gender in post-war psychology\, psychiatry\, sexology\, sociology;\nthe exchange between military and civilian medical care\, and the consequences for the interwar medical views on sex;\nthe significance of the war for theories on the instinctual life of men and women;\nthe influence of personal and intimate encounters of middle class intellectuals and working class men and women in the military (soldiers\, nurses…);\nthe impact of the presence of colonial troops in Europe and the resulting interracial sexual/romantic relationships\, miscegenation etc.;\nfemale intellectuals and the experience of the patriotic/nationalistic wave cutting through the transnational feminist movement;\nthe effects of travelling and dislocation (including experiences in the Ottoman Empire\, the Middle-East…) on intellectual discourses on gender and sexuality.\n\nAbstracts of papers (20 minutes) should contain no more than 400 words and should be sent\, with a one-page cv\, by email to henk.desmaele@uantwerpen.be. The conference language will be English but contributions in French are welcome if accompanied by a powerpoint in English. \nAbstract deadline: 15 December 2017\nNotification of acceptance: February 2018 \nThe organizers will be able to cover travel and accommodation costs of a limited number of participants. \nA selection of papers will be published afterwards in an edited volume or special issue of a journal. \nOrganizing committee:\nHenk de Smaele (University of Antwerp)\nCécile Vanderpelen (Université Libre de Bruxelles)\nGita Deneckere (Ghent University)\nAmandine Lauro (Université Libre de Bruxelles/FNRS)\nLaurence Van Ypersele (UCL)\nFlorent Verfaille (Cegesoma/State Archives of Belgium)\nKaat Wils (KU Leuven) \nThe call is also available as a pdf and on www.avg-carhif.be (Archive and Research Centre for Women’s History).\nYou can contact avg.carhif@amazone.be for further information.

SUMMARY:International Conference: The State of the Art in the History of Politics
DESCRIPTION:Registration page and programme \nOrganized by the National Research School for Political History OPG\n30 November – 1 December 2017\, Royal Library The Hague \nOn the occasion of the start of its second lustrum\, the National Research School for Political History OPG organizes an international conference to discuss the state of the art in the history of politics. The central issue for this conference is to look for the commonality between the many approaches to the history of politics that have bloomed in the past decades. Does political history still have a core of shared topics\, problems and concepts\, or is the field fragmented into a wide array of studies on things political? We aim to answer these questions from an intellectual as well as a practical perspective: What do we mean when we study politics? And what are promising new direction for political historians to work on together? \nDebates\, presentations\, proposals\nWe will organize the conference along three separate lines: debates\, presentations\, proposals\, spread over two days. There will be five debates\, each preceded by a key note on main issues of the debate. The key note is given by international scholars\, the panel contains a mix of scholars from older and younger generations and from different disciplines. The themes of the panel are (a) Writing the History of Political Culture\, (b) Writing the History of Political Institutions\, (c) Writing Global History\, (d) Politics of the History of Politics and (e) Writing the Political History of the Social. In between the debates\, there are four session in which new research can be presented and collaboration forged in elevator pitches\, speed dates and sand pits. PhD candidates and research masters present their work with poster presentations. \nSpeakers (confirmed) \nKey notes: Barbara Stollberg-Rilinger \, Mark Bevir\, Marc Stears\, Corinna Unger and Lutz Raphael. \nPanellists: Carla van Baalen\, Wouter Beekers\, Dennis Bos\, Gita Deneckere\, Karwan Fatah-Black\, Anne Heyer\, Marieke de Goede\, Dienke Hondius\, Lotte Jensen\, Geertje Mak\, Kiran Patel\, Remco Raben en Anne-Isabel Richard. \nCoordination:\nMieke Aerts\, Marnix Beyen\, Stefan Couperus\, Liesbeth van de Grift\, Ido de Haan\, Leonard van ’t Hul\, Harm Kaal\, Ronald Kroeze\, Dries Raeymaekers\, Pieter Slaman\, Margit van der Steen\, Henk te Velde with assistance from Eline Abbink. \nmargit.van.der.steen@huygens.knaw.nl /  www.onderzoekschoolpolitiekegeschiedenis.nl \n  \nAmsterdam\, 10  March 2017

DESCRIPTION:http://www.create.humanities.uva.nl/events/create-digital-history-workshop/ \nThe upcoming CREATE Digital History Workshop will take place on 19 October and focuses on the history of migration and professions using various tools created by CLARIAH (Common Lab Research Infrastructure for the Arts and the Humanities). \nRichard Zijdeman will demonstrate how historians can make use of linked data. Querying linked data remains a challenge to many scholars. To facilitate the exploration of linked data\, CLARIAH created GRLC\, a tool that allows researchers to share queries across the web and enable anyone to execute predefined queries (or adapt them to their own research question). \nLiliana Melgar will introduce the Media Suite\, a research environment which aims to serve the needs of media scholars\, historians and other scholars who use audiovisual media. \nThe media suite facilitates the analysis of audiovisual collections and their contextual data (such as Program Guides) by providing scholars with a wide array of tools for corpus selection\, search and annotation. \nThe workshop is free and open to everyone. No technical skills are required. \nTime & location: 19 October 14-17 pm\, Turfdraagsterpad 9\, BG 1\, Room 0.16 (eLab). \nPlease register by emailing k.beelen@uva.nl. \n

SUMMARY:Conference Subaltern political knowledges\, 18th – 20th centuries
DESCRIPTION:https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/conferences/subaltern-political-knowledges-2017/# \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInternational conference \n\nUniversity of Antwerp – Power in History. Center for Political History \nFelixArchief 18 – 20 October 2017 \nDuring the last decades\, political historians have increasingly focused on the evolution of political consciousness among the “common people” during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In that process they have often made use of all-encompassing notions such as politicization\, democratization and nationalization. These have in common that they suggest an increasing commitment of a growing number of citizens in the political life of the nation\, but because these concepts are so general and linear\, they are hard to grapple with. Do they refer to an increase in consciousness and/or agency? Apart from the difficulty of measuring these processes\, one can also ask whether they necessarily occur in parallel. A more active participation in electoral processes\, for example\, does not necessarily entail a greater commitment to political values\, and membership of political associations can be inspired as much by individual calculations as by concern for the common good. \nThe conference “Subaltern political knowledges” intends to take one step back and ask a question which should precede all discussion of politicization\, democratization and nationalization of the masses: what did people actually know about politics? In our quest for an answer\, we will primarily focus on ‘subaltern’ groups in society\, i.e. on people that neither occupied a position of formal or informal power in society nor were able to make their voice heard in public debates. We aim at discovering the knowledge these people expressed about political institutions\, personalities\, values and ideologies. While doing so\, we pay attention to both the temporal and the spatial framework of this knowledge. Was it situated primarily at a local or national level\, or did it extend to international politics? And did people only refer to politics of their own time\, or did they evoke politicians and/or political systems of the past? Did they engage in comparisons between the past and the present? \nApart from the contents of the political knowledge of the subalterns\, this conference also investigates its sources. Did these subalterns refer to the newspapers and other mass media\, were they informed by electoral campaigns\, were they inspired by informal talk with neighbors or relatives\, was membership of associations a decisive factor? \nThirdly and finally\, the conference intends to address the question how people acted upon their political knowledge. Did they use it in order to further their personal interests\, or to support institutional or societal change? \nThe challenge of this conference will be to bring together a broad range of papers in which these questions are addressed empirically\, preferably on the basis of sources created by subalterns (whether or not addressing members of elite groups). The geographical scope of the conference is emphatically global\, and we invite scholars to submit proposals on cases from all over the world. They should be situated\, however\, in contexts where some form of institutionalized democratic politics was taking shape\, but where the distribution of political knowledge was not yet facilitated by a powerful mass media such as television. The focus of the conference\, therefore\, will be on the period between the last decades of the eighteenth century and the 1950s. \nRather than offering grand narratives about the increase or decrease of political knowledge\, we aim to historicize the theme\, investigating how in diverse historical contexts certain types of political knowledge correlated with categories such as gender\, age\, ethnicity\, urbanity\, profession\, literacy\, sociability and electoral status (voter vs. non-voter). By juxtaposing and comparing these micro-historical investigations\, we hope to be able to assess the relative strength and recurrence of these correlations. In the process\, we will build a strong empirical foundation for nuanced discussions of politicization\, democratization and nationalization. \nKeynote speakers include: Rachel Jean-Baptiste (UCDavis)\, Eduardo Elena (University of Miami)\, Maartje Janse (Universiteit Leiden)\, Harm Kaal (Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen)\, Michaela Fenske (University of Würzburg) and Frédéric Monier (Université d’Avignon). \nScientific committee: Marnix Beyen (Universiteit Antwerpen)\, Jon Lawrence (Cambridge University)\, Harm Kaal (Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen)\, Martin Kohlrausch (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven)\, Karen Lauwers (Universiteit Antwerpen)\, Frédéric Monier (Université d’Avignon). \nDiscover the programme

However\, with this proliferation comes questions about what exactly genealogy is\, how to understand past work on and of genealogy (in particular by Nietzsche and Foucault)\, how it is connected to other forms of critical inquiry (such as ideology critique)\, and what its role can and should be in political theorising more broadly. \nThis workshop brings together scholars working on genealogy to discuss and begin to answer these questions\, with a particular focus on the growing contribution of genealogy for helping us to make sense of contemporary political theory and practice. \nProgramme \n\n10:00 – Professor Bernard Reginster (Brown University)\, “Nietzsche on Truth and Genealogy”.\n11:10 – Coffee Break\n11:20 – dr. Janosch Prinz (University of East Anglia) “Combining genealogy and ideology critique in realism in political theory”.\n12:30 – Lunch\n13:30 – dr. SUMMARY:Bijeenkomst goede poster ontwerpen in het kader van congres 'The State of the Art in the History of Politics'
SUMMARY:Call for Papers: Creative communities in cities and regions. Historical case-studies from Germany and the Benelux-countries
DESCRIPTION:Organisation/Organisatie:          Arbeitskreis Deutsch-Niederländische Geschichte (ADNG) und Partner \nDatum:                                     22. – 23. Februar 2018 \nEinsendefrist/Deadline:             1. The rise of the creative class hervorgegangen. The rise of the creative class gepubliceerd.

SUMMARY:4th Bergen-Belsen International Summer School – „Memory in the Digital age: Comparative Memory Studies”
DESCRIPTION:31 July – 6 August 2017\nThe fourth Bergen-Belsen International Summer School\, which will take place at the Bergen-Belsen Memorial from the 31st of July until the 6th of August 2017\, will deal with memory and remembrance in a comparative perspective. We aim to gather international Master and PhD students from different disciplines\, but with a particular interest in topics in Holocaust-\, Genocide- and Memory Studies. The programme will consist of lectures\, workshops\, tours of the Memorial and an excursion to Hanover.\nContent\nDuring the Summer School\, we want to offer the participants the opportunity to both learn more about the specifics of Holocaust remembrance at the Bergen-Belsen Memorial and discuss various topics related to Comparative Genocide- and Memory studies. We will focus on questions such as:\nWhat perspectives and experiences do visitors of memorials bring along and how does this influence their perception of a historical site?\nDoes competitive victimhood play a role in remembrance and if so\, to what extent?\nHow and in what context could or should we compare mass atrocities?\nWhat are different strategies of transitional justice and how successful have they proven to be?\nWhat are the challenges and opportunities of social media in educational work at memorials?\nProgramme\nThis year’s Summer School will consist of an introductory lecture by Kjell Anderson (Leiden/Amsterdam). He will provide a theoretical framework\, by elaborating on the (rather new) field of Comparative Genocide Studies and will present his research on the criminology of genocide. The first days feature guided tours in the Memorial’s permanent exhibition and on the former camp grounds. This will be complemented by a workshop on aspects of concept and design in museology by Sytse Wierenga (Barcelona) and Stephanie Billib (Bergen-Belsen). Thijs Bouwknegt\, who is currently a researcher at Netherlands Institute for War-\, Holocaust- and Genocide Studies (Amsterdam)\, will offer his insight on processes of transitional justice in (amongst others) Sub-Saharan Africa from his experiences as a journalist\, historian and jurist.\nThis year’s Summer School also includes presentations by early career scholars and young professionals on topics ranging from remembrance of the Armenian genocide to concepts of competitive victimhood in remembering the Holocaust in the former Socialistic Federative Republic of Yugoslavia. These sessions will provide an opportunity to discuss the participants’ own work in an open environment. The young scholars presenting their work were found through a Call for Papers. All other participants will have the opportunity to actively engage by commenting lectures\, writing blogposts and moderating the final discussion.\nDuring a day trip to Hanover\, the group will visit the Ahlem Memorial. This former Jewish horticultural school first served as an assembly point for deportations and was later a “police replacement prison”.\nRegistration\nThe working language of the Bergen-Belsen International Summer School is English. The participants’ language skills must be sufficient to enable them to understand the preparatory texts\, follow the lectures and tours and actively participate in the discussions. Participants must be 18 or older.\nAccommodation will be in double rooms. The costs for the programme\, accommodation and meals will be borne by the Bergen-Belsen Memorial. Participants are responsible for arranging and paying for their own arrival and departure as well as any necessary visas. The Memorial will not subsidise the travel costs.\nRegistration is possible via the online application form until the 12th of May 2017. You will find this form and additional information on our blog: http://gbbbb.org/summerschool/\nContact\nTessa Bouwman\ncontact.bbiss2017@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Ethics for One World. Public Lecture by Peter Singer
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe world faces serious problems that require global solutions. Climate change is the most obvious\, but by no means the only one of these problems. Therefore the ethical imperative to strengthen forms of global governance has not changed. Yet\, recent elections have shown that moving ahead with globalization poses the danger of an electoral backlash. In this difficult situation\, what should advocates of a global ethical stance do? \nAbout the speaker\nPeter Singer is an Australian moral philosopher. He is the Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University\, and a Laureate Professor at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at the University of Melbourne. \nThe lecture is organised together with Room for Discussion. The lecture is made possible through the generous support of the John Stuart Mill College of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Programme Group Challenges to Democratic Representation of the Department of Political Science\, University of Amsterdam. \nRegistration for attendance is not required\, seats are limited.

SUMMARY:Masterclass with Quentin Skinner: Global Intellectual History? A Contextualist Perspective
DESCRIPTION:In recent years intellectual history has re-established itself as a distinct and vital field of scholarship which focusses on the social and cultural contexts of thought as well as to language\, rhetoric\, and meaning. This is to no small extent thanks to Quentin Skinner\, who has propagated the so-called ‘contextualist method’ as the gold standard of intellectual history. At the same time\, however\, contextualism has also been contested from various perspectives. In particular\, contextualism has been criticised by scholars embracing ‘big’ or even ‘global’ intellectual history. \nThe Masterclass is open exclusively for postgraduate students who will have the unique opportunity to discuss these issues with Quentin Skinner himself. The actual practice of contextualism and the main conceptual challenges to its value as a tool for the practice of intellectual history will be discussed\, as well as the desirability and feasibility of writing ‘big’ or ‘global’ intellectual history.\nDate & time: Thursday 25 May\, 14.00-17.00 hrs.\nLocation: Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam\nRegistration: Open for postgraduate students in history or a related field. Students participating in the Masterclass will also come together on Friday 19 May\, 16.00 hrs. at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam to discuss Skinner’s work on historical method. Please contact Thijs Bogers in order to register: t.j.bogers@vu.nl. \nThe Masterclass with Quentin Skinner is organised by the Amsterdam Centre for Political Thought and the Jonge Historici\, and is co-funded by the Amsterdam Centre for Globalisation Studies. \nThijs Bogers & Annelien de Dijn\nDirectors of the Amsterdam Centre for Political Thought
