DESCRIPTION:De toestand van het verleden. Visies op de historicus van morgen\nEen historiografisch symposium ter gelegenheid van 100 jaar opleiding Geschiedenis aan de VU\n \nIn 2018 bestaat de opleiding Geschiedenis aan de VU 100 jaar. Ter gelegenheid daarvan organiseert de opleiding op vrijdag 15 juni 2018 een historiografische symposium over het vak geschiedenis en zijn toekomst. Het doel is om uitdagingen en obstakels waarvoor het vak in de (nabije) toekomst komt te staan in kaart te brengen. In plaats van terug te kijken willen we nu eens vooruit kijken. Moet de historicus van de 21e eeuw bijvoorbeeld over andere methoden\, skills\, en persoonlijke eigenschappen beschikken dan bijvoorbeeld de 20e-eeuwse historicus? Welke vragen zullen aan en door de historicus gesteld worden? Hoe zal de geschiedenis als discipline zich verhouden tot andere wetenschappelijke disciplines en opvattingen over het verleden buiten de academie? \nIn de ochtend zijn er twee keynotes. Professor Joris van Eijnatten zal spreken over de uitdagingen van digitalisering. Professor Herman Paul zal spreken over de historicus van morgen. In de middag zijn er twee ronden met drie panelsessies waarin steeds een specifieke vorm van geschiedbeoefening aan de orde komt. Hier presenteert de opleiding geschiedenis van de VU zich. Panelsessies worden voorgezeten door leden van de opleiding geschiedenis die sprekers van verschillende universiteiten of andere wetenschappelijke instellingen hebben uitgenodigd een statement over een bepaald historiografisch veld te geven. \nHet symposium wordt afgesloten met de presentatie van een boek met bijdragen van huidige VU-historici en een borrel. De sociale en politieke dimensies van wetenschap is centraal komen te staan. Ook is er meer aandacht voor de materiële kant van de wetenschappen. Dit roept vragen op. In dit panel kijken we terug en vooruit. Hoe heeft de wetenschapsgeschiedenis zich de afgelopen decennia ontwikkeld en welke vervolgstappen kunnen we nog verwachten? \nSprekers: dr. Ab Flipse (VU) \nDe toekomst van het religieus verleden: naar een agenda voor de religiegeschiedenis \nWie het verleden onderzoekt – hoe recent ook – komt op de meest onverwachte plaatsen ‘religie’ tegen. Niet alleen in religieuze instituten als kerken\, synagogen en moskeeën\, ook in de politieke arena\, in het maatschappelijk middenveld en in persoonlijke biografieën. De studie van het religieuze aspect in de geschiedwetenschap is lange tijd sterk verkaveld geweest: verspreid over verschillende confessionele groepen\, vaak geïsoleerd van bredere historische thema’s. In deze sessie willen we een bestandsopname maken: waar staat het relatief jonge vakgebied religiegeschiedenis precies\, hoe moet het vruchtbaar beoefent worden en welke thema’s zouden de komende periode op de agenda moeten staan? \nSprekers: dr. Het antwoord bepaalt welke thema’s in de geschiedtheorie centraal zouden moeten staan. Dit panel stelt opnieuw de vraag wat geschiedenis nu relevant maakt. Zij doet dat naar aanleiding van recente ontwikkelingen in de geschiedbeoefening en geschiedtheorie. Dit panel wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met de Studiegroep Geschiedfilosofie. \nSprekers: dr. Berber Bevernage (UG)\, dr. Rik Peters (RUG)\, en dr. Jacques Bos (UvA). Inleider: dr. Chiel van den Akker (VU) \nDanalyse van emoties en betekenis in tekst en beeld \nLangetermijnonderzoek op cultuurhistorisch gebied daagt ons uit om nieuwe digitale methoden in te zetten en te ontwikkelen zodat we grotere hoeveelheden tekst en beeld kunnen analyseren en vergelijken. Maar hoe doe je dat als je op zoek bent naar betekenis en emoties? Is de zo contextafhankelijke betekenis te modelleren in telbare kenmerken? Hoe kan de computer leren net als wij ‘tussen de regels door te lezen?’ Welke beloftes houden die computationele benaderingen van tekst en beeld voor de toekomst van ons vak in? \nSprekers: Milan van Lange MA (NIOD\, UU)\, dr. Melvin Wevers (KNAW HUC)\, en dr. Folgert Karsdorp (Meertens). \nInleider: dr. Erika Kuijpers (VU) \nPolitieke geschiedenis: nieuwe thema’s\, nieuwe benaderingen \nOnder invloed van de politieke cultuurbenadering\, soms zelfs een paradigmawisseling genoemd\, heeft het vakgebied van de politieke geschiedenis aan belang en diversiteit gewonnen de laatste drie decennia. DESCRIPTION:On 7-8 June 2018\, we will conclude the year 2017-18 for the Research School for Political History with a two-day seminar at the Openlucht Museum in Arnhem and in Ravenstein at the Soeterbeeck conference venue of the Radboud University Nijmegen. See the program for more details\n \nThe “politics of political history” in general and the controversial “canon of Dutch/national history” in particular constitute the recurring theme of the seminar: in the visit to the exhibition\, the pub quiz\, the keynote as well as in the workshop on the second day. SUMMARY:Lecture: Human Rights and the Idea of Choice\, by Professor Sophia Rosenfeld
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by Professor Sophia Rosenfeld as part of the Amsterdam Seminar Global Intellectual History series: \nHuman Rights and the Idea of Choice \nIn her lecture Professor Rosenfeld will consider the importance of the idea of choice for the development of the modern human rights movement.  The notion of freedom entailing the proliferation of both opportunities for choice-making and choices themselves is widely understood to be central to the rise of consumer culture in the West. This understanding of freedom-as-choice should\, however\, equally be recognized as critical to conceptions of the self that increasingly shaped human rights ideology from the eighteenth century onward. \nRosenfeld will explore how this came to be by focusing less on key philosophical texts than on the rise of new\, quotidian social practices associated with choosing\, including both voting (in which one is asked to pick representatives) and couple-based social dancing (in which one is asked to pick potential romantic or marriage partners)\, that flourished in the wake of the age of revolutions. Methodologically\, the talk will also focus on how ideologies are made. \nSophia Rosenfeld is Walter H. Annenberg Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania\, where she teaches European intellectual and cultural history with a special emphasis on the Enlightenment\, the trans-Atlantic Age of Revolutions\, and the legacy of the eighteenth century for modern democracy.  She is the author of A Revolution in Language: The Problem of Signs in Late Eighteenth-Century France (Stanford\, 2001) and also of Common Sense: A Political History (Harvard\, 2011)\, which won several prizes. She is now writing two new books: one on how the idea and practice of choice-making became so central to modern conceptions of freedom\, and the other on truth and democracy in historical perspective.

Karen Donfried to Utrecht University on 25 April. Karen Donfried is the President of the German Marshall Fund to the United States (GMFUS). Before assuming her role at the GMFUS\, she was President Barack Obama’s principal advisor on Europe\, and senior director for European affairs on the National Security Council (NSC) at the White House. \nKaren Donfried’s visit will be hosted by the section for the History of International Relations. In cooperation with UGlobe and the Institutions for Open Societies (IOS) Platform on EU Policy and Politics\, we have organized a masterclass for students\, as well as an academic seminar on the past\, present and future of the transatlantic partnership – in which we will also host prof. DESCRIPTION:Leiden University Nationalism Network \nNationalism is on the rise. Nationalist politicians are in power in countries like Hungary\, Russia\, India\, Philippines and Venezuela. With Brexit and the election of Donald Trump nationalism has also become a prominent ideology in the most important powers in the Western world. National identity and nation-building are  key  issues in political debates all over the world\, including the Netherlands \nNationalism has a long history and has been studied by a large number of experts from a broad range of disciplines\, also within our own university. The Leiden University Nationalism Network now aims to bring these scholars together to discuss recent developments in the field of nationalism studies. Peter van Dam and dr. Jeroen van Zanten \nIn this course\, students explore theories and concepts relevant to the history of politics\, on the basis of an analysis of a number of major texts. Attention will be devoted to the conceptualization of key concepts\, e.g. politics and the political\, power\, institutions\, political action\, political culture\, political organization\, state and the regime. Furthermore\, the national\, inter- and transnational nature of political history will be studied. The use of concepts and theories will be investigated by applying them to specific episodes in history. The course will be taught in Dutch or English (depending on the language skills of the participants). \nParticipants in this course will learn:\n– 1. How to define and analyze key political concepts;\n– 2. How to understand and apply major theories within the history of politics;\n– 3. How to evaluate historical studies from a conceptual and theoretical perspective;\n– 4. How to use key concepts and major theories in the analysis of sources for the study of the political history. \nIn each of the meetings\, students will first discuss major themes and problems of the readings. In the second part of the meeting\, students will discuss sources for the study of the theme at hand. This workshop explores the ways in which the legacy of empires and their end has shaped migration and responses to it in post-war Europe. What can we learn about colonialism and its aftermath by looking at the lives and experiences of migrants? How have states attempted to regulate migration individually and as members of the European Union?  How have people in Europe reacted to these developments?  During this workshop\, the featured speakers will shed light on these questions and address key themes and prevalent approaches. DESCRIPTION:International Conference “Thinking Sex after the Great War”\nDeadline 15/12/2017 (Conference 17-18 October 2018\, Brussels) \nThe last few decades\, the multifaceted relations between gender and the First World War have been explored in various historical studies. Historians have analysed the role of gender in the run-up to the outbreak of the war and in the war propaganda\, they have depicted the gendered experience of the war by soldiers and civilians\, and probed the ways in which the war challenged and blurred existing gender roles. Yet they have also described how the war in the end often seemed to reinforce gender stereotypes. Throughout this rich literature\, the question of the impact of the war on gender relations often resurfaces\, although most scholars seem to agree that a definitive and general answer on the ‘net result’ of the war in terms of increasing or decreasing equality\, is hard to reach and probably beside the point.\nThe organizers of this conference invite historians to reflect on the impact of the Great War on gender from the specific angle of learned discourses. Intellectuals\, philosophers\, social scientists\, physiologists\, psychologists and scientists witnessed and experienced the war personally. Some of them were integrated in the military war machine (either as ‘common’ soldiers\, officers or experts) and were relocated\, while others stayed at home and continued their jobs\, or registered themselves as ‘conscientious objectors’ and explicitly opposed the war. Like other citizens\, they lost family members and friends\, experienced love and desire\, excitement and disillusionment\, enthusiasm and indignation. These experiences inevitably impacted upon their view of society\, human nature and the role of the sexes and sexuality. The conference will focus on the trajectories and experiences of intellectuals before\, during and after the war\, and how the war reinforced\, challenged or changed research agendas\, paradigms and knowledge about gender and sexuality. \nTopics of interest include\, but are not limited to: \n\nthe links between sexuality\, aggression and gender in post-war psychology\, psychiatry\, sexology\, sociology;\nthe exchange between military and civilian medical care\, and the consequences for the interwar medical views on sex;\nthe significance of the war for theories on the instinctual life of men and women;\nthe influence of personal and intimate encounters of middle class intellectuals and working class men and women in the military (soldiers\, nurses…);\nthe impact of the presence of colonial troops in Europe and the resulting interracial sexual/romantic relationships\, miscegenation etc.;\nfemale intellectuals and the experience of the patriotic/nationalistic wave cutting through the transnational feminist movement;\nthe effects of travelling and dislocation (including experiences in the Ottoman Empire\, the Middle-East…) on intellectual discourses on gender and sexuality.\n\nAbstracts of papers (20 minutes) should contain no more than 400 words and should be sent\, with a one-page cv\, by email to henk.desmaele@uantwerpen.be. The central issue for this conference is to look for the commonality between the many approaches to the history of politics that have bloomed in the past decades. Does political history still have a core of shared topics\, problems and concepts\, or is the field fragmented into a wide array of studies on things political? We aim to answer these questions from an intellectual as well as a practical perspective: What do we mean when we study politics? And what are promising new direction for political historians to work on together? \nDebates\, presentations\, proposals\nWe will organize the conference along three separate lines: debates\, presentations\, proposals\, spread over two days. DESCRIPTION:http://www.create.humanities.uva.nl/events/create-digital-history-workshop/ \nThe upcoming CREATE Digital History Workshop will take place on 19 October and focuses on the history of migration and professions using various tools created by CLARIAH (Common Lab Research Infrastructure for the Arts and the Humanities). \nRichard Zijdeman will demonstrate how historians can make use of linked data. Querying linked data remains a challenge to many scholars. To facilitate the exploration of linked data\, CLARIAH created GRLC\, a tool that allows researchers to share queries across the web and enable anyone to execute predefined queries (or adapt them to their own research question). \nLiliana Melgar will introduce the Media Suite\, a research environment which aims to serve the needs of media scholars\, historians and other scholars who use audiovisual media. \nThe media suite facilitates the analysis of audiovisual collections and their contextual data (such as Program Guides) by providing scholars with a wide array of tools for corpus selection\, search and annotation. \nThe workshop is free and open to everyone. In that process they have often made use of all-encompassing notions such as politicization\, democratization and nationalization. These have in common that they suggest an increasing commitment of a growing number of citizens in the political life of the nation\, but because these concepts are so general and linear\, they are hard to grapple with. Do they refer to an increase in consciousness and/or agency? Apart from the difficulty of measuring these processes\, one can also ask whether they necessarily occur in parallel. A more active participation in electoral processes\, for example\, does not necessarily entail a greater commitment to political values\, and membership of political associations can be inspired as much by individual calculations as by concern for the common good. \nThe conference “Subaltern political knowledges” intends to take one step back and ask a question which should precede all discussion of politicization\, democratization and nationalization of the masses: what did people actually know about politics? In our quest for an answer\, we will primarily focus on ‘subaltern’ groups in society\, i.e. on people that neither occupied a position of formal or informal power in society nor were able to make their voice heard in public debates. We aim at discovering the knowledge these people expressed about political institutions\, personalities\, values and ideologies. While doing so\, we pay attention to both the temporal and the spatial framework of this knowledge. Was it situated primarily at a local or national level\, or did it extend to international politics? And did people only refer to politics of their own time\, or did they evoke politicians and/or political systems of the past? Did they engage in comparisons between the past and the present? \nApart from the contents of the political knowledge of the subalterns\, this conference also investigates its sources. Did these subalterns refer to the newspapers and other mass media\, were they informed by electoral campaigns\, were they inspired by informal talk with neighbors or relatives\, was membership of associations a decisive factor? \nThirdly and finally\, the conference intends to address the question how people acted upon their political knowledge. Did they use it in order to further their personal interests\, or to support institutional or societal change? \nThe challenge of this conference will be to bring together a broad range of papers in which these questions are addressed empirically\, preferably on the basis of sources created by subalterns (whether or not addressing members of elite groups). The geographical scope of the conference is emphatically global\, and we invite scholars to submit proposals on cases from all over the world. They should be situated\, however\, in contexts where some form of institutionalized democratic politics was taking shape\, but where the distribution of political knowledge was not yet facilitated by a powerful mass media such as television. The focus of the conference\, therefore\, will be on the period between the last decades of the eighteenth century and the 1950s. \nRather than offering grand narratives about the increase or decrease of political knowledge\, we aim to historicize the theme\, investigating how in diverse historical contexts certain types of political knowledge correlated with categories such as gender\, age\, ethnicity\, urbanity\, profession\, literacy\, sociability and electoral status (voter vs. non-voter). By juxtaposing and comparing these micro-historical investigations\, we hope to be able to assess the relative strength and recurrence of these correlations. SUMMARY:Bijeenkomst goede poster ontwerpen in het kader van congres 'The State of the Art in the History of Politics'
DESCRIPTION:Een belangrijk doel van het congres is een staalkaart te presenteren van onderzoeksvragen en thema´s waar politiek-historici zich op dit moment mee bezighouden. Een fors deel van het onderzoekswerk wordt gedaan door promovendi. Dat maakt dat zowel de OPG als het organiserend comité de aanwezigheid en deelname van promovendi en ook research masters zeer belangrijk vinden. \nTijdens het congres zal er daarom een prominente plaats worden ingeruimd waar je\, door middel van een posterpresentatie\, jouw onderzoeksproject kan delen met een breder publiek. Een posterpresentatie is de ideale manier om je (voorlopige) onderzoeksbevindingen kernachtig te presenteren en biedt bovendien een aanleiding om je eigen netwerk onder politiek-historici uit te bouwen. \nDe posters zullen gedurende het congres tentoongesteld worden\, en vormen een integraal onderdeel van het programma. Omdat wij het belangrijk vinden dat de promovendileden van de OPG aanwezig zijn op deze dagen\, willen we je zoveel mogelijk tegemoet komen in de voorbereidingen van een poster. Daarom zal er op \n21 september 2017\, van 15.30 – 17.30 uur in Utrecht (Kromme Nieuwe Gracht 80 zaal 006) \neen bijeenkomst georganiseerd worden waarin we aan de slag gaan met het ontwerpen van een goede poster. Bovendien vergoed de organisatie van het congres de drukkosten van je poster tot een bedrag van €15\,-. Na afloop is er een borrel. \nZowel het bestuur als het organiserend comité kan niet genoeg benadrukken hoe belangrijk de aanwezigheid van de OPG-promovendi op het congres is. November 2017 \nSeit 2010 richtet der Arbeitskreis Deutsch-Niederländische Geschichte (ADNG) regelmäßige Workshops aus\, um über laufende Forschungsarbeiten zu beraten und Ideen auszutauschen. Der zeitliche Fokus liegt dabei auf dem 20. Jahrhundert; Arbeitssprachen sind Deutsch\, Niederländisch und Englisch. Der 10. Workshop des Arbeitskreises findet in Leeuwarden\, der Europäischen Kulturhauptstadt 2018\, statt. Gastgeber ist die Fryske Akademy (FA)\, ein Institut der Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademy van Wetenschappen. Das Duitsland Instituut Amsterdam und das N.W. Dies gilt sowohl für die Geschichts- als auch für die Sozialwissenschaften. Aus dem interdisziplinären Feld der Urban Studies ist 2002 das einflussreiche Buch The rise of the creative class hervorgegangen. Autor Richard Florida zeigt darin\, dass die Konzentration kreativer Akteure in Städten zu einer hohen Produktivität führt: Das durch die „kreative Klasse” geschaffene\, innovative Milieu wirkt anziehend auf die Wirtschaft. Auch im weltweiten Wettbewerb um Besucher\, Firmen und Touristen investieren Städte und Regionen immer öfter in die gezielte Entwicklung ihrer Images und Repräsentationen. \nHistoriker haben darauf hingewiesen\, dass der Einsatz von Kultur als Mittel ökonomischer Entwicklung mit Machtverhältnissen und Aspekten politischer Hegemonie zusammenhängt. Dieser aktuelle und kritische Zugang verdient es\, mit einer erweiterten Perspektive und auch vergleichend verfolgt zu werden. So wird Kultur in zunehmendem Maße als ein Faktor gesehen\, der auch wirtschaftliche Stadt- und Regionalentwicklung erklären und/oder beeinflussen kann. \nCase Studies aus Deutschland und den Benelux-Ländern \nDer Workshop in Leeuwarden beschränkt sich auf Städte und Regionen in Deutschland und den Benelux-Ländern. Seine zentralen Fragestellungen kreisen um den Begriff creative communities:  Welche Akteure zählen hierzu? Wie setzen diese Gemeinschaften (lokale) Kultur als Mittel ökonomischer Entwicklung ein? Oder sind sie vielmehr ein Produkt dieser Entwicklung? Wie können wir den Erfolg dieses Phänomens bewerten\, und was sind die Schattenseiten? Gibt es Unterschiede\, Gemeinsamkeiten und Verbindungen zwischen Städten und Regionen aus Deutschland und den Benelux-Staaten? \nThematisch zwaartepunt \nCultuur wordt als een belangrijke motor van economische ontwikkeling gezien. Dit geldt voor de historische wetenschap\, maar evengoed voor de sociale wetenschap. Vanuit het interdisciplinaire veld van urban studies werd in 2002 het invloedrijke boek The rise of the creative class gepubliceerd. De auteur Richard Florida betoogde dat de concentratie van creatieve geesten in steden tot een hoge productiveit leidde. Het innovatieve milieu dat door de ‘creatieve klasse’  geschapen werd\, zou een aanzuigende werking hebben op het bedrijfsleven. Ook in de wereldwijde concurrentie om toeristen besteden steden en regio’s steeds meer energie in het ontwikkelen van hun imago en representaties. \nHistorici hebben erop gewezen dat het benutten van cultuur als middel voor economische ontwikkeling samenhangt met machtsrelaties en aspecten van politieke hegemonie. Deze recente en kritische benadering verdient een vervolg\, waarbij de ruimtelijke focus verbreed kan worden. Zo wordt in toenemende mate cultuur gezien als een factor die stedelijke en regionale ontwikkeling kan verklaren en/of beïnvloeden. \nCase-studies uit Duitsland en de Benelux-landen \nDe workshop in Leeuwarden beperkt zich tot ontwikkelingen in Duitsland en de Benelux-landen. Vragen die centraal staan\, bewegen zich rondom het begrip ‘creative communities’: welke actoren kunnen hiertoe gerekend kunnen worden? Hoe zetten deze gemeenschappen cultuur in als middel voor economische ontwikkeling? Of zijn ze er een product van? Hoe kunnen we het succes hiervan beoordelen\, en wat zijn de schaduwzijden? Zijn er verschillen\, overeenkomsten en verbindingen tussen steden en regio’s uit Duitsland en de Benelux? \nHistorische Fallstudien können sich zum Beispiel auf folgende Themen beziehen: \n\nCultural Industries in Städten und Regionen\n„Festivalisierung” von lokaler und internationaler Kulturpolitik (Kulturhauptstadt Europas)\nCultural Heritage als Ressource und Instrument der Stadtentwicklung\nKonstruktionen und Kampagnen städtischer und regionaler Images\nLokale und regionale Strategiepläne für Kultur und Tourismus\n\nEinladung \nDie Einsendefrist für Vorschläge zur allgemeinen deutsch-niederländischen Geschichte oder zum Schwerpunktthema creative communities in cities and regions ist der 1. November 2017. Tagungssprachen sind Deutsch\, Englisch und Niederländisch. Der Arbeitskreis möchte insbesondere junge Wissenschaftler\, wie Promovenden und Post-Docs\, aber auch Masterstudenten von beiden Seiten der Grenze zur Teilnahme ermutigen. Geplant ist eine Veröffentlichung der ausgearbeiteten Papers. De Werkgroep wil in het bijzonder jonge onderzoekers\, zoals promovendi en post-docs\, maar ook masterstudenten\, van beide zijden van de grens aanmoedigen te reageren. De organisatie is voornemens om (een selectie van) de uitgewerkte papers te publiceren. Aan deelname aan de workshop zijn geen kosten verbonden.
