SUMMARY:Jos de Beus Lecture 2018 by Prof. Jacob T. Levy (McGill)
DESCRIPTION:Date & time: Monday 19 November 2018\, 17.00-19.00 hrs.\nLocation: VOC-room\, Bushuis\, Kloveniersburgwal 48\, Amsterdam\nEntrance is free\, registration not required. \n‘Justice in Babylon: Political Norms and Ideals in an Unjust World’ \n“Babylon” stands for the thought that valuable political life does not depend on deep unity among citizens\, or on a strong identification between citizens and the state\, or on the state itself as a source of ultimate moral authority. It treats politics as something that happens to us\, as other social phenomena happen to us\, not as something we will into being or a flattering reflection of our moral selves. Politics\, like the rain\, falls on the just and the unjust alike. We often rely on an overmoralized\, teleological image of the unified political people\, and of the Weberian state it inhabits. I argue that the sources of political and legal order are more varied\, the sources of democratic stability more pluralistic\, and the sources of justice much more complex than we would think from ideal theory\, mainstream democratic theory\, or dominant public ideologies about questions of loyalty\, allegiance\, and national identity. This allows us to see that there is a justice of Babylon as well as a peace of Babylon; we need not imagine a strong mutual identification between our wills and the state or among the denizens and subjects of the same state in order to use the critical language of justice and injustice\, or to be able reasonably seek and promote justice among strangers. Indeed\, that is the only political justice we ever truly have access to. \nAbout\nJacob T. Levy is Tomlinson Professor of Political Theory\, Professor of Political Science\, and associated faculty in the Department of Philosophy at McGill University. His areas of research include liberal and constitutional theory\, federalism and local self-government\, multiculturalism and nationalism\, freedom of association\, and the history of political thought\, especially centered on the eighteenth century and Montesquieu. He is the author of The Multiculturalism of Fear (OUP 2000) and Rationalism\, Pluralism\, and Freedom (OUP 2014)\, and editor or coeditor of Colonialism and Its Legacies\, Nomos LV: Federalism and Subsidiarity\, and the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Classics in Contemporary Political Theory. \nThe Jos de Beus Lecture 2018 is made possible by the research group Challenges to Democratic Representation of the Department of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam.

SUMMARY:Jaarcongres Leuven: vroegmoderne geschiedenis in actuele debatten

\nMeer informatie over het programma: https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/agenda/2018/11/erfgoed-in-het-revolutietijdvak-archieven-musea-en-collecties \nAanmelden via Diederik Smit d.e.j.smit@hum.leidenuniv.nl  of Carolien Boender c.boender@hum.leidenuniv.nl

SUMMARY:Opening Academic Year
DESCRIPTION:Amsterdam\, 20 September 2018 16.00 – 18.00 hrs. \nDebate on cooperation between political historians and political scientists \nWith Liesbeth van de Grift\, Ido de Haan\, Maartje Janse and Wim van Meurs   \nYou are very welcome to participate in the opening meeting of the national Research School Political History (OPG). In this meeting\, we will address the relationship between political history and the social sciences. Point of departure for the debate is the inaugural lecture of professor of European political history Wim van Meurs (Radboud University Nijmegen)\, in which he argued that political historians and political scientist might both benefit from a closer interaction. Political scientist could profit from the historian’s craft of contextualization and historiography as ways to position their own work in time. Historians should become more aware of the public relevance and comparative perspective in the study of politics which political scientist have to offer. (full text lecture: https://repository.ubn.ru.nl//handle/2066/190132) \nBefore we open the floor to all present\, there will be two interventions Dr. Maartje Janse (Leyden University) has substantially broadened our understanding of political organization in the 19th century beyond the reduction of these phenomena in political science as precursor of political parties. Dr Liesbeth van de Grift (Utrecht University) has contributed to the comparative study of the security services\, internal colonization and consumer representation from a historical perspective. The debate will be chaired by OPG academic director prof. dr. Ido de Haan (Utrecht University). \nAfter the debate all are invited to join the board of the OPG for drinks. \nDate: 20 September 2018\, 16.00 – 18.00 hrs.\nLocation: Spinhuis\, room 2.18 \, Oudezijds Achterburgwal 185\, Amsterdam\nRegistration: please send an email before 17 September to bureau@onderzoekschoolpolitiekegeschiedenis.nl\nParticipation is free of charge. \nInformation: margit.van.der.steen@huygens.knaw.nl

SUMMARY:Summerschool Helsinki\, 7-23 August: An Introduction to Conceptual History
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Conceptual History is a critical journey into the key concepts used in politics and other activities. As such\, it will engage and encourage the course members in the use of analytic concepts employed in the social sciences and the humanities. An international team of distinguished scholars and visiting lecturers will discuss methods and practices of conceptual history\, and the study of political concepts as a style of theorising about and analysing political and social practices. \nSee:http://www.helsinkisummerschool.fi/courses/course/introduction-conceptual-history/

SUMMARY:Symposium: De toestand van het verleden. Visies op de historicus van morgen
DESCRIPTION:De toestand van het verleden. In debat over wetenschappelijke personae \n12.00      Lunch \n13.15      Parallelsessie 1. Is Global History goed verankerd in ons onderwijs? SUMMARY:Lecture: Human Rights and the Idea of Choice\, by Professor Sophia Rosenfeld
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by Professor Sophia Rosenfeld as part of the Amsterdam Seminar Global Intellectual History series: \nHuman Rights and the Idea of Choice \nIn her lecture Professor Rosenfeld will consider the importance of the idea of choice for the development of the modern human rights movement.  The notion of freedom entailing the proliferation of both opportunities for choice-making and choices themselves is widely understood to be central to the rise of consumer culture in the West. This understanding of freedom-as-choice should\, however\, equally be recognized as critical to conceptions of the self that increasingly shaped human rights ideology from the eighteenth century onward. \nRosenfeld will explore how this came to be by focusing less on key philosophical texts than on the rise of new\, quotidian social practices associated with choosing\, including both voting (in which one is asked to pick representatives) and couple-based social dancing (in which one is asked to pick potential romantic or marriage partners)\, that flourished in the wake of the age of revolutions. Methodologically\, the talk will also focus on how ideologies are made. \nSophia Rosenfeld is Walter H. Annenberg Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania\, where she teaches European intellectual and cultural history with a special emphasis on the Enlightenment\, the trans-Atlantic Age of Revolutions\, and the legacy of the eighteenth century for modern democracy.  She is the author of A Revolution in Language: The Problem of Signs in Late Eighteenth-Century France (Stanford\, 2001) and also of Common Sense: A Political History (Harvard\, 2011)\, which won several prizes. She is now writing two new books: one on how the idea and practice of choice-making became so central to modern conceptions of freedom\, and the other on truth and democracy in historical perspective.

SUMMARY:Workshop on ‘Researching (Post)colonial Migration’
DESCRIPTION:With presentations by Peo Hansen (Linköping University)\, Olivier Esteves (Lille III University)\, and Johannes Paulmann (Leibniz-Institut für Europäische Geschichte\, Mainz) \nOn Friday\, 19 January 2018\, Peter van Dam and Liz Buettner of the Modern History Research Group at the University of Amsterdam invite you to a workshop on ‘Researching (Post)colonial Migration’ that features presentations by three leading international scholars. \nHow has decolonisation influenced the ways in which European citizens and residents\, old and new\, approached their lives? This workshop explores the ways in which the legacy of empires and their end has shaped migration and responses to it in post-war Europe. What can we learn about colonialism and its aftermath by looking at the lives and experiences of migrants? How have states attempted to regulate migration individually and as members of the European Union?  How have people in Europe reacted to these developments?  During this workshop\, the featured speakers will shed light on these questions and address key themes and prevalent approaches. This will be followed by a wider discussion based on the audience’s questions and reflections of the participants. \nAll are welcome\, but please register beforehand by e-mailing p.h.vandam@uva.nl by Tuesday 16 January.

SUMMARY:Call for papers: International Conference "Thinking Sex after the Great War"
DESCRIPTION:International Conference “Thinking Sex after the Great War”\nDeadline 15/12/2017 (Conference 17-18 October 2018\, Brussels) \nThe last few decades\, the multifaceted relations between gender and the First World War have been explored in various historical studies. Historians have analysed the role of gender in the run-up to the outbreak of the war and in the war propaganda\, they have depicted the gendered experience of the war by soldiers and civilians\, and probed the ways in which the war challenged and blurred existing gender roles. Yet they have also described how the war in the end often seemed to reinforce gender stereotypes. Throughout this rich literature\, the question of the impact of the war on gender relations often resurfaces\, although most scholars seem to agree that a definitive and general answer on the ‘net result’ of the war in terms of increasing or decreasing equality\, is hard to reach and probably beside the point.\nThe organizers of this conference invite historians to reflect on the impact of the Great War on gender from the specific angle of learned discourses. Intellectuals\, philosophers\, social scientists\, physiologists\, psychologists and scientists witnessed and experienced the war personally. Some of them were integrated in the military war machine (either as ‘common’ soldiers\, officers or experts) and were relocated\, while others stayed at home and continued their jobs\, or registered themselves as ‘conscientious objectors’ and explicitly opposed the war. Like other citizens\, they lost family members and friends\, experienced love and desire\, excitement and disillusionment\, enthusiasm and indignation. These experiences inevitably impacted upon their view of society\, human nature and the role of the sexes and sexuality. The conference will focus on the trajectories and experiences of intellectuals before\, during and after the war\, and how the war reinforced\, challenged or changed research agendas\, paradigms and knowledge about gender and sexuality. \nTopics of interest include\, but are not limited to: \n\nthe links between sexuality\, aggression and gender in post-war psychology\, psychiatry\, sexology\, sociology;\nthe exchange between military and civilian medical care\, and the consequences for the interwar medical views on sex;\nthe significance of the war for theories on the instinctual life of men and women;\nthe influence of personal and intimate encounters of middle class intellectuals and working class men and women in the military (soldiers\, nurses…);\nthe impact of the presence of colonial troops in Europe and the resulting interracial sexual/romantic relationships\, miscegenation etc.;\nfemale intellectuals and the experience of the patriotic/nationalistic wave cutting through the transnational feminist movement;\nthe effects of travelling and dislocation (including experiences in the Ottoman Empire\, the Middle-East…) on intellectual discourses on gender and sexuality.\n\nAbstracts of papers (20 minutes) should contain no more than 400 words and should be sent\, with a one-page cv\, by email to henk.desmaele@uantwerpen.be. The conference language will be English but contributions in French are welcome if accompanied by a powerpoint in English. \nAbstract deadline: 15 December 2017\nNotification of acceptance: February 2018 \nThe organizers will be able to cover travel and accommodation costs of a limited number of participants. \nA selection of papers will be published afterwards in an edited volume or special issue of a journal. \nOrganizing committee:\nHenk de Smaele (University of Antwerp)\nCécile Vanderpelen (Université Libre de Bruxelles)\nGita Deneckere (Ghent University)\nAmandine Lauro (Université Libre de Bruxelles/FNRS)\nLaurence Van Ypersele (UCL)\nFlorent Verfaille (Cegesoma/State Archives of Belgium)\nKaat Wils (KU Leuven) \nThe call is also available as a pdf and on www.avg-carhif.be (Archive and Research Centre for Women’s History).\nYou can contact avg.carhif@amazone.be for further information.

SUMMARY:International Conference: The State of the Art in the History of Politics
DESCRIPTION:Registration page and programme \nOrganized by the National Research School for Political History OPG\n30 November – 1 December 2017\, Royal Library The Hague \nOn the occasion of the start of its second lustrum\, the National Research School for Political History OPG organizes an international conference to discuss the state of the art in the history of politics. The central issue for this conference is to look for the commonality between the many approaches to the history of politics that have bloomed in the past decades. Does political history still have a core of shared topics\, problems and concepts\, or is the field fragmented into a wide array of studies on things political? We aim to answer these questions from an intellectual as well as a practical perspective: What do we mean when we study politics? And what are promising new direction for political historians to work on together? \nDebates\, presentations\, proposals\nWe will organize the conference along three separate lines: debates\, presentations\, proposals\, spread over two days. There will be five debates\, each preceded by a key note on main issues of the debate. The key note is given by international scholars\, the panel contains a mix of scholars from older and younger generations and from different disciplines. The themes of the panel are (a) Writing the History of Political Culture\, (b) Writing the History of Political Institutions\, (c) Writing Global History\, (d) Politics of the History of Politics and (e) Writing the Political History of the Social. In between the debates\, there are four session in which new research can be presented and collaboration forged in elevator pitches\, speed dates and sand pits. PhD candidates and research masters present their work with poster presentations. \nSpeakers (confirmed) \nKey notes: Barbara Stollberg-Rilinger \, Mark Bevir\, Marc Stears\, Corinna Unger and Lutz Raphael. \nPanellists: Carla van Baalen\, Wouter Beekers\, Dennis Bos\, Gita Deneckere\, Karwan Fatah-Black\, Anne Heyer\, Marieke de Goede\, Dienke Hondius\, Lotte Jensen\, Geertje Mak\, Kiran Patel\, Remco Raben en Anne-Isabel Richard. \nCoordination:\nMieke Aerts\, Marnix Beyen\, Stefan Couperus\, Liesbeth van de Grift\, Ido de Haan\, Leonard van ’t Hul\, Harm Kaal\, Ronald Kroeze\, Dries Raeymaekers\, Pieter Slaman\, Margit van der Steen\, Henk te Velde with assistance from Eline Abbink. \nmargit.van.der.steen@huygens.knaw.nl /  www.onderzoekschoolpolitiekegeschiedenis.nl \n  \nAmsterdam\, 10  March 2017
