SUMMARY:Seminar New Horizons in Military History Research
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday 27 February 2019\, 9.30 – 18.00 hrs.\nLocation:  Amsterdam University Library\, Singel 425\, Doelenzaal.\n \nOver the past decades\, military history has developed into a field covering a wide variety of topics\, theories and methodologies. Moving beyond ‘traditional’ operational military history\, successive waves of social and cultural historians have focused on the impact of military organization and activities on wider society\, or have found new ways to discuss organized violence and the various forms and shapes of warfare across increasingly wide temporal and geographical dimensions. However\, due to the plethora of new approaches and influences\, there is a distinct danger of losing sight of military history as a distinct field of historical inquiry. Situated within an increasingly interdisciplinary field of study we can ask ourselves: what makes military history? Is there still a subdiscipline of military history and military historians? And furthermore\, what are the benefits and pitfalls of these developments? \nThe Research School of Political History hosts a one-day seminar on current developments in military history and beyond. During several panel sessions and an interactive workshop\, we will touch upon different topics\, such as the relationship between the armed forces and society\, responsibility and ethics\, identity and memory\, minorities and diversity. In these workshops\, participating PhD candidates and scholars will collaborate and discuss the future of military history and its methodology. The day will conclude with a keynote by prof. Sönke Neitzel (professor of military history and the cultural history of violence at the University of Potsdam) on the future of military history\, after which we will retreat for drinks. \nThe seminar will be held at the University Library of Amsterdam on the 27th of February 2019. This day will provide an opportunity for young scholars working within the field of military history in the broadest sense to present their research and to stimulate debate on the relevance of military history and its connections to other fields within the discipline of history. Would you like to proceed beyond one nation state or one forum of political debate in your research? Are you looking for methodological approaches to apply in your master’s thesis\, doctoral dissertation or postdoctoral research\, would you like to reflect on methods with others or just broaden your methodological arsenal? \nWelcome to this one-day course on the methods for the history of political concepts and discourse which discusses the field in comparative and transnational perspectives. Instead of teaching some ‘right’ methods\, this course encourages methodological reflections and discussion with others in search for a combination of research strategies that might work in the analysis of each participant’s research topics. In haar boek onderscheidt Mudge drie opeenvolgende vormen van linkse ideologie in de afgelopen eeuw: socialisme\, keynesianisme en de derde weg / progressivisme. Die laatste stroming noemt ze ook wel ‘geneoliberaliseerd links’. Mudge verklaart de omarming van neoliberale ideeën vooral vanuit de rol van ‘party experts’. \nMudge houdt eerst een inleiding over haar boek. Daarna vindt een publiek interview plaats met voormalig PvdA-leider Ad Melkert over de vraag of Mudges analyse ook opgaat voor de PvdA. Wat zegt Mudges analyse van de derde weg en progressivisme over de Paarse jaren? De bijeenkomst sluit af met een panel met Stephanie Mudge\, Duco Hellema en Den Uyl-hoogleraar Sarah de Lange over de analyse van Mudge. Is die overtuigend? DESCRIPTION:Migratie en identiteit\nMigratie is een van de meest besproken thema’s op dit moment. Door velen in het publieke debat wordt de migratiesamenleving gezien als een nieuw fenomeen en een breuk met de voorgaande eeuwen. Tegelijkertijd wordt het beeld van Nederland als een van oudsher gastvrij land nog steeds gehuldigd. \nDe interdisciplinaire werkgroep De Moderne Tijd (voorheen De Negentiende Eeuw) organiseert op 14 december 2018 het jaarcongres Migratie en identiteit. In dit congres onderzoeken we de betekenis van migratie voor de negentiende en vroege twintigste eeuw.  Veel historisch onderzoek naar migratie wordt gedaan door sociale en economische historici. De aandacht gaat hierbij meestal uit naar structurele processen en veranderingen. DESCRIPTION:10 December 2018\, te Amsterdam \nDe afgelopen vijftien jaar zagen veel wetenschappelijke politieke biografieën het licht. De publicatie Thorbecke wil het van Remieg Aerts\, gekozen tot het beste politieke boek in 2018\,  vormde de directe aanleiding om de balans op te maken en een symposium te organiseren over de vraag welke bijdrage deze biografieën leveren aan de vernieuwing van de politieke geschiedenis. \nTijdens deze werk- en discussiebijeenkomst buigen we ons over de  vraag wat  kennis over het persoonlijke toevoegt aan ons denken over het politieke. DESCRIPTION:Date & time: Monday 19 November 2018\, 17.00-19.00 hrs.\nLocation: VOC-room\, Bushuis\, Kloveniersburgwal 48\, Amsterdam\nEntrance is free\, registration not required. \n‘Justice in Babylon: Political Norms and Ideals in an Unjust World’ \n“Babylon” stands for the thought that valuable political life does not depend on deep unity among citizens\, or on a strong identification between citizens and the state\, or on the state itself as a source of ultimate moral authority. It treats politics as something that happens to us\, as other social phenomena happen to us\, not as something we will into being or a flattering reflection of our moral selves. Politics\, like the rain\, falls on the just and the unjust alike. We often rely on an overmoralized\, teleological image of the unified political people\, and of the Weberian state it inhabits. I argue that the sources of political and legal order are more varied\, the sources of democratic stability more pluralistic\, and the sources of justice much more complex than we would think from ideal theory\, mainstream democratic theory\, or dominant public ideologies about questions of loyalty\, allegiance\, and national identity. This allows us to see that there is a justice of Babylon as well as a peace of Babylon; we need not imagine a strong mutual identification between our wills and the state or among the denizens and subjects of the same state in order to use the critical language of justice and injustice\, or to be able reasonably seek and promote justice among strangers. Indeed\, that is the only political justice we ever truly have access to. \nAbout\nJacob T. Levy is Tomlinson Professor of Political Theory\, Professor of Political Science\, and associated faculty in the Department of Philosophy at McGill University. His areas of research include liberal and constitutional theory\, federalism and local self-government\, multiculturalism and nationalism\, freedom of association\, and the history of political thought\, especially centered on the eighteenth century and Montesquieu. SUMMARY:Jaarcongres Leuven: vroegmoderne geschiedenis in actuele debatten
DESCRIPTION:De vroegmoderne tijd kan de laatste jaren rekenen op grote belangstelling in Nederland en Vlaanderen. In politieke discussies over (nationale) identiteit\, onderwijs en de erfgoedsector wijzen opiniemakers bijvoorbeeld maar al te graag op de economische\, politieke\, sociale en culturele verworvenheden van de periode voor 1800. Deze interesse in het verleden is uiteraard toe te juichen. Maar het politieke gebruik van historische verwijzingen staat ook op gespannen voet met een getrouwe en verantwoorde weergave van het verleden. Niet voor niets zijn veel vroegmodernisten vrij sceptisch over de maatschappelijke benutting van hun kennis. Hoe moeten we hier als historici van de vroegmoderne tijd mee omgaan? Hoe kunnen we naast onze pogingen het verleden op zijn eigen merites te bestuderen\, tevens onze wetenschappelijke expertise en vaardigheden aanwenden in de publieke debatten van nu? En is het eigenlijk wel onze taak om met het heden bezig te zijn? Deze vragen staan centraal op het jaarcongres van de Vlaams-Nederlandse Vereniging voor Nieuwe Geschiedenis. De lezingen besteden onder andere aandacht aan het gebruik van de vroegmoderne tijd in discussies over canonvorming\, (post)kolonialisme\, nationalisme en historische vergelijkingen. SUMMARY:Symposium Erfgoed in het Revolutietijdvak: archieven\, musea en collecties
DESCRIPTION:In samenwerking met het Nationaal Archief \nOp 9 november vindt in het Nationaal Archief\, te Den Haag\, het symposium Erfgoed in het Revolutietijdvak: archieven\, musea en collecties\, 1780-1815 plaats. Tijdens dit symposium zal aan de hand van een keynote en een achttal korte bijdragen van historici\, archivarissen en onderzoekers uit de museumwereld uitgebreid worden stilgestaan bij de vraag hoe de politieke ontwikkelingen in deze periode hun weerslag hadden op de omgang met archieven\, kunstvoorwerpen en andere vormen van materieel erfgoed. \nDe nadruk zal daarbij in de eerste plaats liggen op de spanning tussen verandering en continuïteit. Historici hebben in het verleden namelijk vooral alles wat nieuw was rond 1800 bestudeerd. Wat er gebeurde met het erfgoed van instituties die reeds bestonden of juist verdwenen aan het begin van de negentiende eeuw\, is tot op heden nauwelijks aandacht aan besteed. Vormde de eenwording van Nederland inderdaad een definitief keerpunt? \nMet het symposium hopen wij niet alleen meer inzicht te genereren in het erfgoedbeleid in een van de in politiek opzicht meest roerige perioden uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis\, maar tevens een brug te slaan naar vergelijkbare kwesties in de tegenwoordige tijd. In this meeting\, we will address the relationship between political history and the social sciences. Point of departure for the debate is the inaugural lecture of professor of European political history Wim van Meurs (Radboud University Nijmegen)\, in which he argued that political historians and political scientist might both benefit from a closer interaction. Political scientist could profit from the historian’s craft of contextualization and historiography as ways to position their own work in time. Historians should become more aware of the public relevance and comparative perspective in the study of politics which political scientist have to offer. Visies op de historicus van morgen\nEen historiografisch symposium ter gelegenheid van 100 jaar opleiding Geschiedenis aan de VU\n \nIn 2018 bestaat de opleiding Geschiedenis aan de VU 100 jaar. Ter gelegenheid daarvan organiseert de opleiding op vrijdag 15 juni 2018 een historiografische symposium over het vak geschiedenis en zijn toekomst. Het doel is om uitdagingen en obstakels waarvoor het vak in de (nabije) toekomst komt te staan in kaart te brengen. In plaats van terug te kijken willen we nu eens vooruit kijken. Moet de historicus van de 21e eeuw bijvoorbeeld over andere methoden\, skills\, en persoonlijke eigenschappen beschikken dan bijvoorbeeld de 20e-eeuwse historicus? Welke vragen zullen aan en door de historicus gesteld worden? Hoe zal de geschiedenis als discipline zich verhouden tot andere wetenschappelijke disciplines en opvattingen over het verleden buiten de academie? \nIn de ochtend zijn er twee keynotes. Professor Joris van Eijnatten zal spreken over de uitdagingen van digitalisering. Professor Herman Paul zal spreken over de historicus van morgen. In de middag zijn er twee ronden met drie panelsessies waarin steeds een specifieke vorm van geschiedbeoefening aan de orde komt. Hier presenteert de opleiding geschiedenis van de VU zich. DESCRIPTION:On 7-8 June 2018\, we will conclude the year 2017-18 for the Research School for Political History with a two-day seminar at the Openlucht Museum in Arnhem and in Ravenstein at the Soeterbeeck conference venue of the Radboud University Nijmegen. See the program for more details\n \nThe “politics of political history” in general and the controversial “canon of Dutch/national history” in particular constitute the recurring theme of the seminar: in the visit to the exhibition\, the pub quiz\, the keynote as well as in the workshop on the second day. The core theme of the seminar is the tension between academic and public history. \nYou have to register for the seminar before 1 May 2018.  Please specify if you have a Museumjaarkaart. SUMMARY:Lecture: Human Rights and the Idea of Choice\, by Professor Sophia Rosenfeld
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by Professor Sophia Rosenfeld as part of the Amsterdam Seminar Global Intellectual History series: \nHuman Rights and the Idea of Choice \nIn her lecture Professor Rosenfeld will consider the importance of the idea of choice for the development of the modern human rights movement.  The notion of freedom entailing the proliferation of both opportunities for choice-making and choices themselves is widely understood to be central to the rise of consumer culture in the West. This understanding of freedom-as-choice should\, however\, equally be recognized as critical to conceptions of the self that increasingly shaped human rights ideology from the eighteenth century onward. \nRosenfeld will explore how this came to be by focusing less on key philosophical texts than on the rise of new\, quotidian social practices associated with choosing\, including both voting (in which one is asked to pick representatives) and couple-based social dancing (in which one is asked to pick potential romantic or marriage partners)\, that flourished in the wake of the age of revolutions. Methodologically\, the talk will also focus on how ideologies are made. \nSophia Rosenfeld is Walter H. Annenberg Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania\, where she teaches European intellectual and cultural history with a special emphasis on the Enlightenment\, the trans-Atlantic Age of Revolutions\, and the legacy of the eighteenth century for modern democracy.  She is the author of A Revolution in Language: The Problem of Signs in Late Eighteenth-Century France (Stanford\, 2001) and also of Common Sense: A Political History (Harvard\, 2011)\, which won several prizes. She is now writing two new books: one on how the idea and practice of choice-making became so central to modern conceptions of freedom\, and the other on truth and democracy in historical perspective.

Karen Donfried to Utrecht University on 25 April. Karen Donfried is the President of the German Marshall Fund to the United States (GMFUS). Before assuming her role at the GMFUS\, she was President Barack Obama’s principal advisor on Europe\, and senior director for European affairs on the National Security Council (NSC) at the White House. \nKaren Donfried’s visit will be hosted by the section for the History of International Relations. In cooperation with UGlobe and the Institutions for Open Societies (IOS) Platform on EU Policy and Politics\, we have organized a masterclass for students\, as well as an academic seminar on the past\, present and future of the transatlantic partnership – in which we will also host prof. DESCRIPTION:Leiden University Nationalism Network \nNationalism is on the rise. Nationalist politicians are in power in countries like Hungary\, Russia\, India\, Philippines and Venezuela. With Brexit and the election of Donald Trump nationalism has also become a prominent ideology in the most important powers in the Western world. National identity and nation-building are  key  issues in political debates all over the world\, including the Netherlands \nNationalism has a long history and has been studied by a large number of experts from a broad range of disciplines\, also within our own university. The Leiden University Nationalism Network now aims to bring these scholars together to discuss recent developments in the field of nationalism studies. Research Master Course\, 5 ects (6 ects for UvA RMA-students). \nDates and time: April 3\, 10\, 17\, 24 and May 1\, 15\, 22 2018 (15.00 – 17.00 hrs)\nPlace: Amsterdam\, t.b.a.\nCourse supervisors: dr. Peter van Dam and dr. Jeroen van Zanten \nIn this course\, students explore theories and concepts relevant to the history of politics\, on the basis of an analysis of a number of major texts. Attention will be devoted to the conceptualization of key concepts\, e.g. politics and the political\, power\, institutions\, political action\, political culture\, political organization\, state and the regime. Furthermore\, the national\, inter- and transnational nature of political history will be studied. The use of concepts and theories will be investigated by applying them to specific episodes in history. The course will be taught in Dutch or English (depending on the language skills of the participants). \nParticipants in this course will learn:\n– 1. How to define and analyze key political concepts;\n– 2. How to understand and apply major theories within the history of politics;\n– 3. How to evaluate historical studies from a conceptual and theoretical perspective;\n– 4. How to use key concepts and major theories in the analysis of sources for the study of the political history. \nIn each of the meetings\, students will first discuss major themes and problems of the readings. In the second part of the meeting\, students will discuss sources for the study of the theme at hand.
