DESCRIPTION:Opening of the Academic Year Research School Political History\nUtrecht\, 1 October 2019 16.00 – 18.00 hrs \nWe warmly invite you for the opening meeting of the national Research School Political History (OPG). \nIn this meeting\, we will present the new training program\, new PhD candidates will introduce themselves and PhD candidates in their second year receive their basic training certificate. The theme of our round table is democracy vs autocracy.  \nRoundtable on democracy and autocracy  \nWith Annelien de Dijn\, Joris Gijsenbergh\, Lars Rensman and Dirk Jan Wolffram  \nThe theme of our rountable is inspired by current societal and political developments\, especially the rise of populism and the emergence of elected autocratic leaders in many countries over the world. History shows that democracy and autocracy are all but mutually exclusive. In the 5th century BC the implementation of Athenian democracy required autocratic leadership. Robespierre legitimized his reign of terror with an appeal to the will of the people\, as did many dictators after him. Democracy was instrumental in fascist and Nazi seizure of power\, and the past decades saw the rise of illiberal democracy. And even in the mother of all parliaments\, Brexit and Boris Johnson have laid bare the vulnerability of democracy. \nWhat can be the lessons learned if we reconsider the historical relation between democracy and autocracy? Lessons for studying political history and for analyzing present-day politics. \nSpeakers are Annelien de Dijn (Utrecht University)\, professor of Modern Political History and chair of the Political History section. Her research focuses on the history of political thought in Europe and in the United States from 1700 to the present. Dr. Joris Gijsenbergh (Radboud University Nijmegen) is assistant professor political history\, specialized in the history of democracy in Western-Europe and the United States during the twentieth century. Lars Rensmann (Groningen University) is professor of European Politics and Society and Director of the Research Center for the Study of Democratic Cultures and Politics. The debate will be chaired by OPG director of education prof. dr. SUMMARY:Congres De zichtbare hand
DESCRIPTION:Op donderdag 29 en vrijdag 30 augustus zal in Utrecht het congres De zichtbare hand over de geschiedenis van het Nederlands neoliberalisme plaatsvinden.\nTwee vragen liggen ten grondslag aan De zichtbare hand: hoe neoliberaal is Nederland\, en waar en hoe is dat neoliberalisme ontstaan? In het publieke debat wordt het begrip ‘neoliberalisme’ vaak gebruikt om marktwerking\, privatisering en de toenemende macht van grote bedrijven te bekritiseren. Over de herkomst en het politieke programma van ‘het neoliberalisme’ is echter veel minder bekend. Op die geschiedenis willen wij ons richten. Dit doen we in een aantal panelsessies met academici\, in sessies met journalisten en vertegenwoordigers van politieke partijen\, en via de keynotelezing van de Deense historicus Niklas Olsen\, auteur van het onlangs verschenen boek The Sovereign Consumer: A New Intellectual History of Neoliberalism. \nHet congres wordt georganiseerd vanuit het onderzoeksproject Market Makers\, dat de oorsprong\, verspreiding en invloed van de Nederlandse neoliberale beweging bestudeert.\nInformatie over het onderzoeksproject en het congres staat op neoliberalisme.nl. Daarnaast is het congresprogramma te vinden op Congresprogramma ‘De zichtbare hand’. \nHet congres zal plaatsvinden in het universiteitsgebouw Drift 21 van de Universiteit Utrecht (Drift 21\, 3512 BR Utrecht). Toch is het zeker geen nieuw verschijnsel. Wat tegenwoordig gebeurt met tweets en campagnespotjes\, gebeurde vroeger met toespraken\, kronieken en pamfletten. De effecten waren er niet minder om. De reputatie van beruchte figuren zoals keizer Caligula\, de hertog van Alva en “Koning Gorilla” is er tot op de dag van vandaag door bepaald. \nOp 21 juni organiseren Edwina Hagen (VU) en Martijn Icks (UvA) een colloquium over karaktermoord in historisch perspectief. Edwina: “Karaktermoord is niet alleen een verschijnsel van vandaag\, zoals recent nog in het nieuws\, maar is van alle tijden. Door de eeuwen heen zijn talloze vorsten\, vorstinnen\, generaals\, geestelijken\, denkers en rebellen bestookt met aanvallen in woord en beeld om hun aanzien te ondermijnen en hen in diskrediet te brengen. Wij bespreken de technieken en methoden van toen om te bekijken of we die kunnen gebruiken in de analyse van gebeurtenissen van vandaag.” \nKaraktermoord in de geschiedenis\nHet colloquium beslaat een groot deel van de westerse geschiedenis\, van de oudheid tot nu. De aandacht gaat vooral uit naar karaktermoord op politieke figuren\, zoals de Heilige Roomse keizer Frederik II\, de gebroeders De Witt en president George Washington. Belangrijke sprekers zijn o.a. de historicus en journalist Luc Panhuysen en de Amerikaanse politiek-psycholoog Eric Shiraev\, een van de grondleggers van het onderzoek naar karaktermoord. De publiekslezing wordt verzorgd door Dirk Wolthekker en gaat over de reputatieschade die de Amsterdamse burgemeester Van Hall ondervond door toedoen van de Provo-beweging. \nNieuwe technieken en media\nEen van de belangrijkste vragen die aan bod komen is de vraag hoe het plegen van karaktermoord werd beïnvloed door veranderende historische omstandigheden\, in het bijzonder door de introductie van nieuwe technieken en media\, zoals de drukpers\, de krant en de radio. SUMMARY:Workshop: Identities beyond the nation
DESCRIPTION:by Dominique Reill (University of Miami) \nRecent scholarship on processes of identification and belonging in Europe’s past and present undergoes an ongoing paradigm shift that gives rise to a more multidimensional understanding of relations between nationalism\, sovereignty\, self-determination and democracy (Nimni 2009). This tendency has increasingly highlighted the importance of questions of regionalism\, peripheries\, (urban) cosmopolitanisms and trans- and cross-border processes of identification\, and how these found resonance in a variety of cultural and political ideas\, practices and institutions throughout modern history. Much work has been done in the fields of area studies\, nationalism and borderland studies\, yet leaving scholars with a divergent mosaic of understandings and notions of what these multileveled concepts of identification actually implicate for their research. In our intention to discuss these tendencies against the background of on-going research projects in cross-regional perspectives\, we have invited one of the currents most notable contributors to these debates on identities beyond the nation\, Dominique K. Reill. \nThis workshop\, jointly facilitated by the Amsterdam School for Regional\, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES) and the Amsterdam Centre for European Studies (ACES)\, aims to tackle this problem by offering interested PhD candidates and RMa students of all disciplines the possibility of addressing these questions of multileveled identification in an informal intellectual exchange. Central to the workshop is the question of how multileveled concepts of identification beyond the nation could be applied as categories of analysis in historical research. \nDominique Reill\, Associate Professor at the University of Miami in Florida\, specializes in Modern European history with particular emphases on dynamics of regionalism and nationalism\, the Nineteenth Century\, Italy\, and the Balkans\, as well as cultural and intellectual history. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 2007. Reill has published extensively on the history of multidimensional understandings of identifications in Europe\, most importantly Nationalists Who Feared the Nation: Adriatic Multi-Nationalism in Habsburg Dalmatia\, Trieste\, and Venice (Stanford UP\, 2012). Currently\, Reill is finishing a new book that looks at the fascinating case of a centuries-old city-state’s resistance to President Woodrow Wilson’s plans for a Versailles-determined order of European nation-states. Moving beyond ‘traditional’ operational military history\, successive waves of social and cultural historians have focused on the impact of military organization and activities on wider society\, or have found new ways to discuss organized violence and the various forms and shapes of warfare across increasingly wide temporal and geographical dimensions. However\, due to the plethora of new approaches and influences\, there is a distinct danger of losing sight of military history as a distinct field of historical inquiry. Situated within an increasingly interdisciplinary field of study we can ask ourselves: what makes military history? Is there still a subdiscipline of military history and military historians? And furthermore\, what are the benefits and pitfalls of these developments? \nThe Research School of Political History hosts a one-day seminar on current developments in military history and beyond. During several panel sessions and an interactive workshop\, we will touch upon different topics\, such as the relationship between the armed forces and society\, responsibility and ethics\, identity and memory\, minorities and diversity. In these workshops\, participating PhD candidates and scholars will collaborate and discuss the future of military history and its methodology. The day will conclude with a keynote by prof. Would you like to proceed beyond one nation state or one forum of political debate in your research? Are you looking for methodological approaches to apply in your master’s thesis\, doctoral dissertation or postdoctoral research\, would you like to reflect on methods with others or just broaden your methodological arsenal? \nWelcome to this one-day course on the methods for the history of political concepts and discourse which discusses the field in comparative and transnational perspectives. Instead of teaching some ‘right’ methods\, this course encourages methodological reflections and discussion with others in search for a combination of research strategies that might work in the analysis of each participant’s research topics. The discussed perspectives include the relationship between historical research and social theory\, intellectual history\, varieties of conceptual history\, history of discourse\, comparative history\, transnational history and the application of computer-assisted methods to the history of political concepts and discourse. \nThe participants should read Willibald Steinmetz & Michael Freeden\, Introduction: Conceptual History: Challenges\, Conundrums\, Complexities\, in Conceptual History in the European Space\, edited by Willibald Steinmetz\, Michael Freeden\, and Javier Fernández-Sebastián (Berghahn: Oxford & New York\, 2017)\, before the course. \nReading and participation in the lecture and discussion gives you 1 ECTS. In haar boek onderscheidt Mudge drie opeenvolgende vormen van linkse ideologie in de afgelopen eeuw: socialisme\, keynesianisme en de derde weg / progressivisme. Die laatste stroming noemt ze ook wel ‘geneoliberaliseerd links’. Mudge verklaart de omarming van neoliberale ideeën vooral vanuit de rol van ‘party experts’. \nMudge houdt eerst een inleiding over haar boek. Daarna vindt een publiek interview plaats met voormalig PvdA-leider Ad Melkert over de vraag of Mudges analyse ook opgaat voor de PvdA. Wat zegt Mudges analyse van de derde weg en progressivisme over de Paarse jaren? De bijeenkomst sluit af met een panel met Stephanie Mudge\, Duco Hellema en Den Uyl-hoogleraar Sarah de Lange over de analyse van Mudge. Is die overtuigend? DESCRIPTION:Migratie en identiteit\nMigratie is een van de meest besproken thema’s op dit moment. Door velen in het publieke debat wordt de migratiesamenleving gezien als een nieuw fenomeen en een breuk met de voorgaande eeuwen. Tegelijkertijd wordt het beeld van Nederland als een van oudsher gastvrij land nog steeds gehuldigd. \nDe interdisciplinaire werkgroep De Moderne Tijd (voorheen De Negentiende Eeuw) organiseert op 14 december 2018 het jaarcongres Migratie en identiteit. In dit congres onderzoeken we de betekenis van migratie voor de negentiende en vroege twintigste eeuw.  Veel historisch onderzoek naar migratie wordt gedaan door sociale en economische historici. De aandacht gaat hierbij meestal uit naar structurele processen en veranderingen. DESCRIPTION:10 December 2018\, te Amsterdam \nDe afgelopen vijftien jaar zagen veel wetenschappelijke politieke biografieën het licht. De publicatie Thorbecke wil het van Remieg Aerts\, gekozen tot het beste politieke boek in 2018\,  vormde de directe aanleiding om de balans op te maken en een symposium te organiseren over de vraag welke bijdrage deze biografieën leveren aan de vernieuwing van de politieke geschiedenis. \nTijdens deze werk- en discussiebijeenkomst buigen we ons over de  vraag wat  kennis over het persoonlijke toevoegt aan ons denken over het politieke. Methodische problemen komen aan bod\,  nieuwe vormen van biografisch schrijven evenals de vraag hoe om te gaan met een hoofdpersoon die nog in leven is.
