SUMMARY:History Things: The Gallic Past and French Historical Research in the Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth Century – Public lecture by Lisa Regazzoni (Bielefeld)
DESCRIPTION:Adopting a fresh perspective\, my research takes on the task of rethinking the field of knowledge dealing with the “Gallic past” in French discourse in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Instead of first buckling down to the analysis of historical narratives surrounding the Gallic past\, it tackles the monument\, the historical evidence that underpinned and verified insights into that past. Spotlighting the monument for the first time as an epistemic object\, it explores its impressive semantic enhancement in the course of the eighteenth century and the concomitant epistemic practices involved in constructing the Gallic past. \nFrom this vantage point\, my research wants to offer a pioneering contribution to a historical epistemology yet to be written\, one that focuses on the historicity of the respective epoch-specific “species” of evidence. The single-minded pursuit of monuments prompts a gaze shift to the French provinces\, where material and immaterial testimonies of the Gallic past were “discovered” and processed into epistemic objects. The “provincializing” of Paris as a site of knowledge production ensues\, shedding light on the crucial role of provincial erudition\, as seen not merely in the “invention” of the Gallic past but also in methodological and epistemological renewal. What follows is a revision of the historiography of recent decades\, which has interpreted the narrative of an “autochthonous” pre-Roman past either as nation building or identity creation. With rare exceptions\, the real purpose of these narratives produced with and around Gallic monuments was to brace ecumenical\, Christian-apologetic\, universalist (and anti-Gallic!) views or parochial claims. \nNo registration is needed\, unless you want to participate online. Previously\, she was a ‘Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter’ at the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt\, held fellowships at\, among other places\, the IAS Princeton\, German Historical Institute London and the EHESS Paris\, and lectured at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. In 2020 she published her ‘Habilitationsschrift’ entitled Geschichtsdinge. Gallische Vergangenheit und französische Geschichtsforschung im 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert. Her research interests include the history and theory of historical studies\, material culture and history of collecting and French intellectual history of the 18th and 19th centuries.

DESCRIPTION:In de zomer van 2022 werd het duidelijk: het migratiebeleid piept en kraakt. Maar is dit het gevolg van de hoge instroom? Of een gevolg van falend en warrig overheidsbeleid? \nDit evenement wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met het Nederlands Genootschap voor Internationale Zaken (NGIZ). \nDe Europese Commissie werkt aan een nieuw asiel- en migratiepact. Het zogenoemde Dublin­systeem zou vervangen moeten worden door een nieuw asiel- en migratie­beheersysteem waarbij asiel­aanvragen beter over de lidstaten worden gespreid. Ook zou er meer in asielprocedures en grensbewaking moeten worden geïnvesteerd. Maar is dit voldoende of moet de Europese Unie harder ingrijpen? En welke middelen heeft de Nederlandse overheid om zelf in te grijpen? Kortom\, is er sprake van een migratievraagstuk of een migratiecrisis? \nDeze vragen staan op 9 maart centraal tijdens het panelgesprek dat wordt georganiseerd door het Montesquieu Instituut en het Nederlands Genootschap voor Internationale Zaken (NGIZ). DESCRIPTION:Every Friday from 24 February until 31 March\, 10-13.00h\nSupervisor: Dr. Carla Hoetink (Radboud University; RSPH/OPG Director of Studies) \n\n\n\nLong gone are the days when political history was only described from official state documents. In today’s historical practice a great deal of attention is paid to multi-perspectivity\, seeking opportunities to hear different voices. No one doubts the relevance of looking beyond the text and incorporating visual\, auditory and material sources. In addition\, new approaches and rapidly developing digital techniques shed fresh light on classical sources and open different possibilities for organizing\, analyzing and presenting sources on a larger scale. What does this mean for writing political history today? \nIn this course\, students develop a broad view of the potential of resources to analyze the history of politics and the political. Students also learn to critically reflect on the limitations of various types of sources\, archives\, and datasets\, and to recognize their ‘political’ nature. What were the roles of e.g. the state and social movements in collecting and archiving materials? What blank spots does this leave in the archives and analyses?

SUMMARY:Tutorial Sources
DESCRIPTION:Supervisor: Dr. Marijke van Faassen (Huygens Institute) \nThe increasing use of digital techniques for researching both analogue and digital texts\, archival sources and data clouds requires a new research methodology in which traditional knowledge is closely interwoven with digital skills. In this tutorial\, an interdisciplinary team of political historians and information scientists will use case studies from their research to provide insight into this current methodological discussion and to more practically discuss ways to find\, criticize\, contextualise and finally prepare such complex sources to use them for research. To prepare for the tutorial\, the PhD-students are requested to write a text in whichthey describe the digital and ‘paper’ sources they use in their research and reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of using them. During the tutorial\, there will be ample time to interactively discuss the problems they experience and to create awareness for alternative sources to work around the problems they face.

SUMMARY:The History of 'Total War' – Masterclass with Professor David A. Bell (Princeton University)
DESCRIPTION:Masterclass with Professor David A. Bell\, Sidney and Ruth Lapidus Professor in the Era of North Atlantic Revolutions at Princeton University. \nThe History of “Total War” \nWhen the French right-wing author Léon Daudet coined the term “total war” in a 1918 pamphlet\, he used it not to describe the cataclysm of the Great War\, but to refer to an aspirational state that the French should strive to achieve in order to defeat the German enemy. The term has since become a staple in several disciplines\, often used to describe a conflict in which all of society’s resources are mobilized to wage war. But it has also come under immense criticism and raises many thorny questions—what wars qualify as total? What level of mobilization must be achieved? Does it refer to the obliteration of the civilian-soldier distinction? To a disregard for the laws of war? And once we agree on a definition\, when did “total war” first begin and why? \nDavid A. Bell has provided an influential answer to these questions in his popular 2007 book The First Total War: Napoleon’s Europe and the Birth of Modern Warfare. He argues that total war is helpfully understood as a process\, specifically one of uncontrolled radicalization and that this phenomenon developed in the wake of the Enlightenment\, during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. \nWe invite master’s students and PhD candidates to participate in a master class at Utrecht University on 26 January 2023 from 14.30 to 17.30 to discuss Bell’s book and more recent scholarship on the subject. For those whose research aligns with this theme\, you will have the opportunity to present your research and receive feedback from Professor Bell and the other participants. Please send a 200-word letter of motivation to Prof. Dr. Ido de Haan (i.dehaan@uu.nl) and Dr. Devin Vartija (d.j.vartija@uu.nl) by 13 January 2023. You can participate online or attend in person in The Netherlands (exact location to be announced). \n________________________________________________________________ \nIn early modern political theory\, analogies between the state and the body were widespread. The ideal society was thought to function like the harmonious cooperation of the organs and the balance of humors in the body. Yet this harmony could falter\, and political unrest\, uprisings\, or ‘foreign intrusions’ were commonly compared to\, and analyzed as diseases. The monarch – or the ‘head’ of state – could and sometimes had to cure the diseases that weakened the body politic. Some physicians argued that monarchs should actively study the principles of medicine and “rule the government of nature” in order to govern their own. Scholars have drawn attention to the growing role of such medical practitioners as political agents\, thinkers\, and advisers in early modern Europe. \nThis one-day workshop builds on this scholarship and seeks to broaden and deepen our understanding of the interaction between disease and the practice of early modern politics. Early modern political actors were obviously embodied. How did they themselves respond to being sick? How did dynasties\, members of state\, and diplomats strategically use disease\, as well as rumors and perceptions of disease\, to weaken their political opponent or increase their own influence? How did they use their sick bodies as political tools? And how did these responses and strategies in turn impact early modern conceptions of disease and medical treatment? During the workshop\, we will explore these questions with a focus on two domains: dynasties and diplomacy throughout the 16th\, 17th and 18th centuries. \nInvited speakers are Dr Megan Williams (University of Groningen) and Dr Stanis Perez (Sorbonne Paris Nord). \nWe invite early career researchers (especially RMA students and PhD candidates) to send in proposals forshort (10-minute) case-oriented presentations that will help us unravel how disease and early modern politics interacted in practice. \nSubmission guidelines\nPlease provide a short abstract (no more than 200 words) detailing your research question\, its relation to the theme of the workshop\, and what you would like to get out of the workshop. Short presentations during the workshop will be about 10 minutes (depending on the number of participants) and serve as prompt for feedback and group discussion. Deadline for presentation submissions is 1 December 2022. \nPossible topics include\, but are not limited to: \n\nroyal physicians as political counsellors\npolitical implications of rumours about sick figures of state\ndynastic solutions for sick\, infertile\, or ‘mad’ kings and queens\nsickness in diplomatic negotiations\nthe role of diseases as forces or actors in political history\n\nOther forms of participation\nYou can also participate without giving a presentation. The catalogue of Constantijn Huygens’s correspondence in Early Modern Letters Online provides the foundation for a cluster of ‘starter catalogues’ that will expand the ‘circles’ of his correspondents.\n\n11.45-12.45 uur: Nieuw onderzoek rondom Huygens \n\nJean-Marc van Tol\, ‘De rollen omgedraaid? De relatie tussen Constantijn Huygens en Johan de Witt’. Constantijn Huygens en Johan de Witt waren in veel opzichten elkaars tegenpolen. Onlangs doken twee brieven van Huygens aan de raadpensionaris op die inzicht geven in de manier waarop zij zich tot elkaar verhielden.\nGeeske Bisschop\, ‘Dat hi in d’crijch moet leeven en sterven’. Militaire patronage in de correspondentie van Constantijn Huygens’. Constantijn Huygens ontving als secretaris van de stadhouder honderden brieven met militaire verzoeken. Deze brieven geven inzicht in hoe de informele kant van militaire patronage werkte en welke strategieën militairen gebruikten om voorspraak te verkrijgen.\nWillemijn van Noord\, ‘Prinses Mary\, Constantijn Huygens en het Chinese lakscherm’. Twee jaar voor zijn dood schreef Huygens een brief aan Prinses Mary II Stuart (1662-1694)\, waarin hij beweerde een belangrijke boodschap van het Chinese volk voor haar te hebben. Recent onderzoek werpt nieuw licht op Huygens’ listige poging om Mary’s Chinese lakscherm te onderzoeken en te behouden.​\n\n13.45-14.45 uur: Huygens en wetenschap \n\nEric-Jan Bos\, ‘Wetenschap in de schaduw van wapens: Huygens als beschermheer van René Descartes’. Uit de briefwisseling die Huygens voerde met Descartes\, en over Descartes\, blijkt een grote en voortdurende belangstelling van de eerste secretaris van de Stadhouder voor de Franse wijsgeer en wetenschapper. Deze lezing belicht op welke manieren Huygens Descartes stimuleerde en beschermde\, en hoe de filosoof hem wederdiensten bewees.\nDirk van Delft\, ‘Hoe Constantijn Huygens Antoni van Leeuwenhoek vooruit hielp’. Antoni van Leeuwenhoeks microscopische waarnemingen hadden de warme belangstelling van Constantijn Huygens. Deze liefhebber van natuuronderzoek deed een goed woordje voor de ‘ongeletterde persoon’ uit Delft bij de Royal Society.\nIneke Huysman\, ‘Constantijn Huygens: amateur-parfumeur’. Dat de veelzijdige Constantijn Huygens zich ook bezighield met parfumerie is vrijwel onbekend. Toch heeft hij meer dan 150 recepten nagelaten\, die hij uitwisselde met zijn correspondenten. Een van die recepten\, getiteld ‘Rieckend water voor mijn moeder’\, is gereconstrueerd en opnieuw te ruiken.\n\n15.15-16.15 uur: Huygens en cultuur \n\nLea van der Vinde\, ‘Van dromen of grillen van schilders’ – Huygens’ correspondentie met kunstenaars’. In Huygens’ omvangrijke correspondentie vinden we diverse brieven van en aan kunstenaars – zijn correspondenten lopen uiteen van de grote Rembrandt van Rijn tot minder bekende meesters als Cornelis Vroom. We kijken naar zijn bouwprojecten in en rond Den Haag\, en naar het gesprek over de nieuwe architectuur in gedichten en brieven.\nTimothy De Paepe\, ‘Een vriend bij vreugde\, een medicijn bij verdriet’. Huygens muzikale correspondentie met de familie Duarte’. Constantijn Huygens onderhield decennialang een hartelijke correspondentie met de Antwerpse juweliersfamilie Duarte. Muziek speelde daarin een centrale rol. De overgeleverde brieven vormen samen een uniek venster op het rijke (muziek)leven van beide families\, hun vriendennetwerk en de rol die muziek daarin speelde.\n\n16.15-16.45: Muzikale afsluiting \n\n\n\nLeonore van Sloten\, mezzosopraan en Willem Mook\, luit delen hun passie voor de kunst en geschiedenis van de Nederlandse Gouden Eeuw. Met hun brede achtergrond in de kunstgeschiedenis en de muziekwetenschap maken zij hun optredens tot meer dan een uitvoering van oude muziek. Het programma is samengesteld rond de muzikale ontwikkeling van Constantijn Huygens. The Masterclass is organized by Prof. dr. Pepijn Brandon and the Graduate School of the Humanities\, and will take place at the VU\, from 14-17h in room Forum 4. \nAbout the Masterclass \nCaribbean writer and theorist Sylvia Wynter belongs to a tradition of radical Caribbean thought and from this tradition has been central in attempts to reread the figure of the human\, its significance\, and its meanings. Her work has become a key point of reference in debates on colonialism and its legacies. This master class will focus on two of her texts\, that will be made available to the participants: \n\n1492: A new world view\nOn How We Mistook the Map for the Territory \n\nHow to apply \nThe Master Class is open for PhD candidates and Research Master students. SUMMARY:Crucial Concepts in Political History
DESCRIPTION:Supervisors: prof.dr. Annelien De Dijn (Utrecht University) and dr. Karin van Leeuwen (Maastricht University) \n\n\n\nDespite their crucial importance for defining a subject\, concepts often receive only little attention in historical research projects. While the lessons on conceptual change learnt from scholars such as Koselleck and Skinner have resulted in the establishment of an entire subfield of conceptual history\, many historians working on politics in practice are easily tempted to leave conceptual reflections entirely to these specialists. Yet\, it is hard to imagine research projects in political history that do not in one or another way engage with concepts such as power\, violence\, rule of law\, institutions\, identity\, colony\, democracy\, ideology\, representation etc. PhDs working on international topics\, like the history of international relations\, often do work with concepts\, often borrowed from the social sciences. In this tutorial\, we will briefly introduce you to the various ways in which both historians and social scientists deal with the challenge to define and/or reflect upon their central concepts\, and invite you to reflect upon the concepts central to your research project.
