SUMMARY:Workshop ‘The Longue Durée Perspective’
DESCRIPTION:11 April 2023\, 13:30-17:30 (followed by drinks)\nUtrecht University\, Kromme Nieuwegracht 80\, Van Ravesteynzaal (1.06)\nRegister here \nAbstract\nHow do you do longue durée history? This workshop aims to bring together historians who apply a longue durée perspective in their research or are contemplating starting a longue durée project. It primarily focusses on the particularities of doing longue durée research and invites the participants to reflect on their methods and share their best practices. Some questions that are likely to be explored are: How to select a strong corpus of sources? How to recognise and study (dis)continuity? And how much contextualisation is enough? \nThe workshop is led by Annelien de Dijn\, Professor of Modern Political History at Utrecht University and author of the longue durée history and award-winning book Freedom: An Unruly History (2020). She will give the participants a unique glimpse into the making of her book and share some concrete examples of how she has applied a longue durée perspective. The workshop is organised by Anne Por and Edurne De Wilde (PhD candidates at Leiden University)\nThe aim of this interactive workshop is to give researchers an opportunity to exchange thoughts about longue durée history with an expert and learn from each other. \nProgramme \n13.30-15.00: Opening\nRound of introductions including shortly addressing the prepared questions (see preparatory assignment below)\nThe possibilities and limitations of longue durée history\nDiscussion of the assigned texts \n15.00-15.30: Break \n15.30-17.30: Longue durée expertise\nAnnelien de Dijn on the making of Freedom: An Unruly History\nQ&A \n17.30: Drinks \nReadings (will be made available by the Huizinga Institute)\n• Armitage\, David. “What’s the Big Idea? Intellectual History and the Longue Durée.” History of European Ideas 38\, no. 4 (2012): 493-507.\n• De Dijn\, Annelien. “Introduction: An Elusive Concept.” Introduction in Freedom. An Unruly History\, Cambridge: Harvard University Press\, 2020. \nPreparatory assignment\nWe ask all participants to prepare their answer(s) to the following questions: Have you come across practical issues in your own longue durée research? How did you deal with or solve these difficulties? Or\, what type of problems do you think you might encounter? \nECTS\nECTS are not standard issued after this workshop. We do however offer the option of participating for 1 ECTS with an extra assignment. Are you interested in participating for 1 ECTS? Please inform the Huizinga Institute via huizinga@uu.nl to receive more information on the extra assignment.

SUMMARY:Conference: Parliament contested? Rethinking the relationship between national politics\, global crises\, and pressure from below in the 1970s
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this conference is to reassess the role of national parliaments and national policy-making processes in the 1970s in light of the increasing global challenges and extra-parliamentary pressure that occurred. What can be seen as decisive turning points shaping the political history of the era? Were they the same in each country\, or did they differ from state to state? And in what way and to what extent were these defining moments and events related to citizen activism\, national political factors and cross-border actors or influences respectively? Furthermore\, what do our findings tell us about politics in the 1970s\, also in relation to the ‘revolutionary’ 1960s and the ‘neoliberal’ 1980s? \nLocation: Radboud University \nMore information.

SUMMARY:Lecture Barbara Sollberg-Rilinger: King Frederick William I of Prussia and the History of Masculinity
DESCRIPTION:On 31 March\, Professor of Early Modern History Barbara Stollberg-Rilinger (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster) will give the lecture ‘King Frederick William I of Prussia and the History of Masculinity: Challenges of Biographical Writing’. \nThe suggestive power of retrospective rationalisation\nFrederick William I\, king of Prussia (1713-1740)\, called himself a tyrant\, and most of his contemporaries would have agreed. Later historians\, however\, used to praise him as “educator of the German nation” and “Prussia’s greatest inner king”. His biography not only offers an insight into the social logic of autocracy and the transformation of masculinity. It is also an exemplary case to demonstrate the malleability of history and the suggestive power of retrospective rationalisation. \nLocation: Janskerkhof 2-3\, room 0.21 \nRegistration: Please send an email to Jip Lettink (j.lettink@uu.nl) \nMore information: Download the flyer

SUMMARY:Lunch Seminar Lucas Poy: Social Democracy and the Limits of Internationalism in the Interwar Period
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, scholars of the anti-Communist and social democratic tradition developed an interpretation in which socialist internationalism is no longer portrayed as opposed to nationalism\, but rather as complementary. This allowed them to move away from older perspectives and to examine the main features of international cooperation among socialists under a more positive light. Its substantial and convincing contributions notwithstanding\, this literature also displays important shortcomings. Not only does it minimize the challenge that nationalism did pose to transnational solidarities: it is also too focused on Europe and therefore overlooks a more serious limit to internationalism\, namely a perspective that proclaimed a principle of colour-blind solidarity among all peoples of the world\, but in practice built a much more limited transnational community of workers either born in Europe or from European descent. \nIn this presentation I complicate our knowledge of socialist internationalism in the 1920s by exploring a unique and under-researched event\, the “World Migration Congress” organized in London in 1926 by the International Federation of Trade Unions and the Labour and Socialist International. Drawing on the idea that international organizations and meetings can be used as ‘observation points’ for studying global history\, I use the prolegomena\, the preparations\, and the discussions of this congress as a lens to understand the stances of socialist parties and reformist trade unions regarding the question of migration in the 1920s\, explaining to what extent\, and for what reason\, they have changed in comparison with the pre-war period. Moreover\, I also show that these stances were intertwined in many ways with perspectives on colonialism and condescending views of the ‘coloured peoples’ of the world. \nThis seminar will be given by Lucas Poy. \nLocation: Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam\, Forum 7 (HG-1D09) \nTo attend this seminar\, please send an email to m.bakkes@student.vu.nl

SUMMARY:Publiek gesprek: ‘Democratie en Omgangsvormen’
DESCRIPTION:De discussie over de omgangsvormen in de Tweede Kamer doet al geruime tijd veel stof opwaaien. Anne Petterson\, Radboud Universiteit; dr.

SUMMARY:Lezingen- en debatavond - Infocentrum WO2 Nijmegen
“Lezing Plunder” of telefonisch via 024-3974404. \nTijd: 19:30 (19:00 Inloop) Einde: 21.45 \nLocatie: Infocentrum WO2 Nijmegen\, Ridderstraat 27\, 6511 TM Nijmegen \nInformatie: 024-3974404 of welkom@infocentrumwo2.nl \nWebsite: www.infocentrumwo2.nl

SUMMARY:CDH Webinar: The datafication of race-ethnicity in Dutch governmental databases
DESCRIPTION:For his PhD research\, Gerwin van Schie delved into the data systems of Dutch government bodies to look at the algorithms used there. He focused on the way Dutch immigrant populations are ‘datafied’ by various societal institutions. Dutch governmental classifications are based on immigrants’ former nationality and that of their parents and often relate to the colonial history of the Netherlands or their country of birth. During this webinar\, he will talk about the results and the methods he has used. \nMore info & registration: Centre for Digital Humanities | CDH webinar: The datafication of race-ethnicity in Dutch governmental databases (uu.nl)

SUMMARY:History Things: The Gallic Past and French Historical Research in the Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth Century – Public lecture by Lisa Regazzoni (Bielefeld)
DESCRIPTION:Adopting a fresh perspective\, my research takes on the task of rethinking the field of knowledge dealing with the “Gallic past” in French discourse in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Instead of first buckling down to the analysis of historical narratives surrounding the Gallic past\, it tackles the monument\, the historical evidence that underpinned and verified insights into that past. Spotlighting the monument for the first time as an epistemic object\, it explores its impressive semantic enhancement in the course of the eighteenth century and the concomitant epistemic practices involved in constructing the Gallic past. \nFrom this vantage point\, my research wants to offer a pioneering contribution to a historical epistemology yet to be written\, one that focuses on the historicity of the respective epoch-specific “species” of evidence. The single-minded pursuit of monuments prompts a gaze shift to the French provinces\, where material and immaterial testimonies of the Gallic past were “discovered” and processed into epistemic objects. The “provincializing” of Paris as a site of knowledge production ensues\, shedding light on the crucial role of provincial erudition\, as seen not merely in the “invention” of the Gallic past but also in methodological and epistemological renewal. What follows is a revision of the historiography of recent decades\, which has interpreted the narrative of an “autochthonous” pre-Roman past either as nation building or identity creation. With rare exceptions\, the real purpose of these narratives produced with and around Gallic monuments was to brace ecumenical\, Christian-apologetic\, universalist (and anti-Gallic!) views or parochial claims. \nNo registration is needed\, unless you want to participate online. In that case\, send an e-mail to: info@globalintellectualhistory.org. \nBiography\nLisa Regazzoni is full professor in Theory of History at the University of Bielefeld. Previously\, she was a ‘Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter’ at the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt\, held fellowships at\, among other places\, the IAS Princeton\, German Historical Institute London and the EHESS Paris\, and lectured at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. In 2020 she published her ‘Habilitationsschrift’ entitled Geschichtsdinge. Jahrhundert. Her research interests include the history and theory of historical studies\, material culture and history of collecting and French intellectual history of the 18th and 19th centuries.

SUMMARY:Panelgesprek Migratievraagstuk of migratiecrisis?
SUMMARY:RMA Course – Back to the Source: Political History Unravelled
DESCRIPTION:Every Friday from 24 February until 31 March\, 10-13.00h\nSupervisor: Dr. Carla Hoetink (Radboud University; RSPH/OPG Director of Studies) \n\n\n\nLong gone are the days when political history was only described from official state documents. In today’s historical practice a great deal of attention is paid to multi-perspectivity\, seeking opportunities to hear different voices. No one doubts the relevance of looking beyond the text and incorporating visual\, auditory and material sources. In addition\, new approaches and rapidly developing digital techniques shed fresh light on classical sources and open different possibilities for organizing\, analyzing and presenting sources on a larger scale. What does this mean for writing political history today? \nIn this course\, students develop a broad view of the potential of resources to analyze the history of politics and the political. Students also learn to critically reflect on the limitations of various types of sources\, archives\, and datasets\, and to recognize their ‘political’ nature. What were the roles of e.g. the state and social movements in collecting and archiving materials? What blank spots does this leave in the archives and analyses?

SUMMARY:Tutorial Sources
DESCRIPTION:Supervisor: Dr. Marijke van Faassen (Huygens Institute) \nThe increasing use of digital techniques for researching both analogue and digital texts\, archival sources and data clouds requires a new research methodology in which traditional knowledge is closely interwoven with digital skills. In this tutorial\, an interdisciplinary team of political historians and information scientists will use case studies from their research to provide insight into this current methodological discussion and to more practically discuss ways to find\, criticize\, contextualise and finally prepare such complex sources to use them for research. To prepare for the tutorial\, the PhD-students are requested to write a text in whichthey describe the digital and ‘paper’ sources they use in their research and reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of using them. During the tutorial\, there will be ample time to interactively discuss the problems they experience and to create awareness for alternative sources to work around the problems they face.

SUMMARY:The History of 'Total War' – Masterclass with Professor David A. Bell (Princeton University)
DESCRIPTION:Masterclass with Professor David A. Bell\, Sidney and Ruth Lapidus Professor in the Era of North Atlantic Revolutions at Princeton University. \nThe History of “Total War” \nWhen the French right-wing author Léon Daudet coined the term “total war” in a 1918 pamphlet\, he used it not to describe the cataclysm of the Great War\, but to refer to an aspirational state that the French should strive to achieve in order to defeat the German enemy. The term has since become a staple in several disciplines\, often used to describe a conflict in which all of society’s resources are mobilized to wage war. But it has also come under immense criticism and raises many thorny questions—what wars qualify as total? What level of mobilization must be achieved? Does it refer to the obliteration of the civilian-soldier distinction? To a disregard for the laws of war? And once we agree on a definition\, when did “total war” first begin and why? \nDavid A. Bell has provided an influential answer to these questions in his popular 2007 book The First Total War: Napoleon’s Europe and the Birth of Modern Warfare. He argues that total war is helpfully understood as a process\, specifically one of uncontrolled radicalization and that this phenomenon developed in the wake of the Enlightenment\, during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. \nWe invite master’s students and PhD candidates to participate in a master class at Utrecht University on 26 January 2023 from 14.30 to 17.30 to discuss Bell’s book and more recent scholarship on the subject. For those whose research aligns with this theme\, you will have the opportunity to present your research and receive feedback from Professor Bell and the other participants. Please send a 200-word letter of motivation to Prof. Dr. Ido de Haan (i.dehaan@uu.nl) and Dr. Devin Vartija (d.j.vartija@uu.nl) by 13 January 2023. Indicate in your letter whether you would like to join as a general participant or whether you would like to present and receive feedback on your research. Students will receive 2 ECTS for participation in the masterclass.

SUMMARY:17 January: Workshop ‘From the body politic to political bodies: power and disease in the early modern period’
DESCRIPTION:Organised by: Kerrewin van Blanken (Huygens Institute) & Lidewij Nissen (Radboud University) in collaboration with Huizinga Institute & Research School for Political History (RSPH/OPG) \nDeadline for presentation proposals: 1 December 2022 \nDeadline for participation without a presentation: 8 December 2022 \nNB: This is a hybrid workshop. You can participate online or attend in person in The Netherlands (exact location to be announced). \n________________________________________________________________ \nIn early modern political theory\, analogies between the state and the body were widespread. The ideal society was thought to function like the harmonious cooperation of the organs and the balance of humors in the body. Yet this harmony could falter\, and political unrest\, uprisings\, or ‘foreign intrusions’ were commonly compared to\, and analyzed as diseases. The monarch – or the ‘head’ of state – could and sometimes had to cure the diseases that weakened the body politic. Some physicians argued that monarchs should actively study the principles of medicine and “rule the government of nature” in order to govern their own. Scholars have drawn attention to the growing role of such medical practitioners as political agents\, thinkers\, and advisers in early modern Europe. \nThis one-day workshop builds on this scholarship and seeks to broaden and deepen our understanding of the interaction between disease and the practice of early modern politics. Early modern political actors were obviously embodied. How did they themselves respond to being sick? How did dynasties\, members of state\, and diplomats strategically use disease\, as well as rumors and perceptions of disease\, to weaken their political opponent or increase their own influence? How did they use their sick bodies as political tools? And how did these responses and strategies in turn impact early modern conceptions of disease and medical treatment? During the workshop\, we will explore these questions with a focus on two domains: dynasties and diplomacy throughout the 16th\, 17th and 18th centuries. \nInvited speakers are Dr Megan Williams (University of Groningen) and Dr Stanis Perez (Sorbonne Paris Nord). \nWe invite early career researchers (especially RMA students and PhD candidates) to send in proposals forshort (10-minute) case-oriented presentations that will help us unravel how disease and early modern politics interacted in practice. \nSubmission guidelines\nPlease provide a short abstract (no more than 200 words) detailing your research question\, its relation to the theme of the workshop\, and what you would like to get out of the workshop. Short presentations during the workshop will be about 10 minutes (depending on the number of participants) and serve as prompt for feedback and group discussion. Deadline for presentation submissions is 1 December 2022. \nPossible topics include\, but are not limited to: \n\nroyal physicians as political counsellors\npolitical implications of rumours about sick figures of state\ndynastic solutions for sick\, infertile\, or ‘mad’ kings and queens\nsickness in diplomatic negotiations\nthe role of diseases as forces or actors in political history\n\nOther forms of participation\nYou can also participate without giving a presentation. If you would like to acquire ECTS without giving a presentation there is an option to hand in a 2000-word essay after the workshop\, reflecting on how the various research perspectives shared at the workshop and the reading of the above-mentioned literature have impacted the development of your own studies/research interests. (Deadline: 10 February). The essay should 1) present a case study or problem the student is working on/would to investigate and 2) relate this to the cases presented during the workshop/the readings by comparing empirical findings/sources/theories/research methodologies and thereby 3) position their research within the wider field of the (political) history of health/disease. \nPreparation and proposed readings\nFor all participants: please read the following articles/chapters in preparation for the workshop (you will receive these articles in due course after your registration). \n\nMarieke Hendriksen\, ‘Making the body politic through medicine: taste\, health and identity in the Dutch Republic\, 1636–1698’\, BJHS Themes (2022)\, 1–23\nTom Tölle\, Heirs of Flesh and Paper: A European History of Dynastic Knowledge around 1700 (DeGruyter\, 2022)\, introduction\, pp. 1-19.\nJacob Soll\, ‘Healing the Body Politic: French Royal Doctors\, History and the Birth of a Nation 1560-1634\, Renaissance Quarterly 55 (2002)\, 1-28.\n\nMore information and registration

SUMMARY:Philosophy of History and the Politics of Interpretation – Winter School VU Amsterdam
DESCRIPTION:Winter School at VU Amsterdam\nLanguage: English\nDuration: 5 days\nCredits: 3 ECTS \nThis course discusses the politics of historical interpretation from the point of view of philosophy of history. \nPhilosophers of history from Hegel to Ankersmit and White have argued that history is closely connected to politics. One reason is that history is concerned with events that affect the socio-political order in which we live. Another is that any interpretation of the past affects the way we understand our present and\, possibly\, the sort of future we should strive for. Memorials and remembrance days\, too\, have political functions.  \n\nThe call for reparation and restitution for past injustices also makes evident the close connection between history and politics. Finally\, history is political in the sense that appealing to the authority of one interpretation of the past over the other is a form of exercising influence\, and hence\, a form of politics. \nCourse Overview \n\nCourse days: 9-20 January 2023\nAttendance: online\nCourse level: Master’s\, PhD candidates\, and professionals from all disciplines\nCourse curriculum: read more about the course curriculum\nCoordinating lecturer: Dr. Chiel van den Akker\nOther lecturers: Dr. Rik Peters (RUG)\, Dr. Jacques Bos (UvA)\nForms of tuition: online\, plenary sessions and active small-group sessions\nLanguage of tuition: English\nForms of assessment: group presentation\nCredits: 3 ECTS\nContact hours: 28 hours\nTuition fee: read all information about our fees\, discounts and scholarships \n\nApply now
