SUMMARY:NIAS Talk: Dutch Colonies of Benevolence
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, the UNESCO World Heritage recognized the lasting cultural significance of the unfree ‘colony of benevolence’ at Veenhuizen (now home to the National Prison Museum). This round table brings together three leading researchers on domestic colonies to discuss the international significance of this colony\, which opened its doors 200 years ago. \n\n\n\n\nThis round table with Professor Barbara Arneil discusses the political ideology behind this domestic colony. In her prize-winning book Domestic Colonies (Oxford University Press\, 2017)\, Arneil has argued that domestic colonies shared in common with overseas settler colonies a similar ideological commitment to three key principles: segregation; agrarian labour; and improvement of both people and land\, in both ethical and economic senses. \nAcross Europe\, domestic colonies attracted progressive thinkers sincerely concerned about the plight of the poor\, committed to improving their welfare. From Johannes van den Bosch in the Netherlands and Sir John Sinclair in Scotland\, to Alexis de Tocqueville in France and Jeremy Bentham in England. All of them wrote essays defending such domestic colonies over alternative social policies (e.g.\, outdoor relief\, emigration\, workhouses and poorhouses\, prison barracks). Yet as the colonies evolved and its inhabitants swelled in numbers\, the colonies often acquired disciplinary and sometimes outright penal dimensions. What is the place of free and unfree colonies of benevolence in the history of social welfare policy? SUMMARY:Roundtable conversation: Reparations\, Lessons from the Past\, Challenges for the Future
DESCRIPTION:On 11 May\, this multidisciplinary event on reparations will bring together practitioners\, scholars\, and students\, in the year that marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Rome Statute (1998)\, which led to the creation of the International Criminal Court and the Trust Fund for Victims. \nParticipants will be invited to reflect about how reparations have changed in the course of the twentieth and twenty-first century\, and how they will continue to be shaped by diplomatic\, legal and academic consideration\, State and individual responsibility\, and victim agency. \nReparations\nToday\, we almost take it as a given that survivors of severe forms of violence deserve some kind of reparation. The imperative to repair is an important principle in international law – one sanctioned by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 60/147 calling for “adequate\, effective and prompt reparation” in the wake of mass atrocities. \nBut the understanding that victims of mass human rights abuses deserve some form of reparation is a relatively recent one. And it underwent crucial shifts in the course of the twentieth century. But how do reparation programmes come to be? How can one assess their reparative value? To what extent can a historical perspective be of help when trying to gauge the present and future viability of reparative justice? \nRoundtable and debate\nDistinguished professor Beatrice de Graaf (History and Global Governance) will chair a roundtable discussion with: Lorena De Vita (History of International Relations)\, Thijs Bouwknegt (NIOD\, Institute for War\, Holocaust and Genocide Studies)\, Julie Fraser (Netherlands Institute of Human Rights)\, Fabián Salvioli (UN Special Rapporteur on Truth\, Justice and Reparation) (tbc)\, and Henk-Cor van der Kwast (Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the International Criminal Court). \nPieter de Baan from the International Criminal Court’s Trust Fund for Victims will lead a public debate and provide closing remarks\, followed by a short reception. \nThe event is organised by Lorena De Vita as part of her research project Holocaust Diplomacy: the Global Politics of Memory and Forgetting\, in partnership with the Alfred Landecker Foundation and the ICC Trust Fund for Victims. \nLocation: Aula\, University Hall\, Utrecht \nRegister for the event here

DESCRIPTION:Until the Second World War\, remembering the past in Europe only served to glorify the nation\, stir up revanchism and sanctify heroes. After 1945\, the trauma of war\, totalitarianism\, and the Holocaust gave rise to a new ambition: that of learning from history. But has this succeeded? \nA decade or two ago\, that memory began to crumble\, abandoned by indifferent younger generations and mutilated by falsifiers of history eager to impose new nationalist narratives based on hatred. As memory fades\, so does vigilance. People forget that peace\, democracy and freedom are a heritage that must be tirelessly protected and nurtured. People forget the countless sacrifices they have demanded of entire generations. You believe that these achievements are given unchangeably\, like the air you breathe. \nThen one morning you wake up and there is a war going on. \nGéraldine Schwarz is a German-French writer\, journalist and documentary filmmaker. After working as a German correspondent for the news agency AFP\, she now publishes in various international media. For her book Les Amnésiques\, she received many awards\, including the European Book Prize in 2018. It is translated into more than ten languages\, a.o. German: Die Gedächtnislosen and English: Those Who Forget.\nIn this book she follows three generations of her family. She traces back the painful process of coming to terms with the past in Germany\, which she sees as a cornerstone of democracy. How did Germans transform collective guilt into democratic responsibility? Schwarz compares it to the work of remembering in France\, Italy\, and Eastern Europe. In that case\, send an e-mail to: info@globalintellectualhistory.org. \nAbstract\nSince the late 1990’s\, global attention to the issue of human trafficking (particularly sex trafficking) has skyrocketed within international institutions and among fascist aspiring conspiracy theorists.  This talk turns to the last period in global history when international anti–trafficking campaigns were this widespread\, the interwar era. I focus on how liberal internationalist supporters of the League of Nations used the putatively “non–political” issue of the “traffic in women and children” to negotiate tensions in the League’s world vision between its universal rhetoric and its ongoing commitment to racial hierarchy and imperialism. Rather than focus on how trafficking helped League internationalists deflect attention away from this disconnect\, however\, I draw upon Edward Said’s notion of “imaginative geography” to better understand the generative quality of trafficking. Read in this light\, an investigation of the League’s archives reveals a complex discursive and bureaucratic process of knowledge production about a globe–spanning\, criminal underworld – populated by anti–Semitic caricatures of traffickers and helpless victims – against which the League could invent and instantiate itself. A closer interrogation of interwar\, anti–trafficking politics thus has much to tell us about the relationship between world making and underworld making in the liberal internationalism imaginary\, and about the overlap between that imaginary and the dreamworld of fascism\, both then and now. \nBiography\nJeanne Morefield is an Associate Professor of Political Theory at the University of Oxford\, a Fellow at New College (Oxford)\, and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Quincy Institute. Her scholarship sits at the intersection of political theory\, international relations\, and intellectual history with a particular focus on the relationship between liberalism\, imperialism\, and internationalism in Britain and America. She is the author of Covenants Without Swords: Idealist Liberalism and the Spirit of Empire (2005)\, Empires Without Imperialism: Anglo American Decline and the Politic of Deflection (2014) and Unsettling the World: Edward Said and Political Theory (2022).  Her next book project\, Underworld\, examines the role of sex trafficking panics in the shared global imaginaries of liberalism and fascism. Morefield’s popular work has appeared in The Boston Review\, Jacobin\, Responsible Statecraft\, and The New Statesman.

DESCRIPTION:Exactly 200 years ago\, the agricultural colony at Veenhuizen was first opened. Established as a social experiment to combat poverty\, re-educate people\, and transform wasteland into productive agricultural land\, the Colony housed thousands of poor families\, vagrants\, orphans\, widows\, and criminals for decades. Because of their great cultural-historical importance\, the Dutch and Flemish Colonies of Benevolence were granted the UNESCO World Heritage status in 2021. \nThis day-long public symposium celebrates both the 200th anniversary and the newly acquired World Heritage status. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Henk Singor spreekt op 3 mei over Constantinopel en de Eerste Jihad\, 633-718. Het overleven van een christelijk Europa in de zevende en achtste eeuw. Deze lezing zal zowel op locatie als online bij te wonen zijn. \nIn zijn lezing zal Henk Singor het vooral hebben over een aantal deelonderwerpen van zijn pas verschenen boek: \n– Een andere (nieuwe) kijk op de oorsprong van de islam als expansionistische en militante religie;\n– Een andere (nieuwe) reconstructie van bepaalde gebeurtenissen\, met name de Arabische verovering van Egypte (639/40-642) en de eerste en tweede Arabische aanval op Constantinopel in 654 en 668;\n– Een andere (nieuwe) waardering van de betekenis van Constantinopel met zijn aldaar bewaarde antieke Griekse wetenschappelijke en filosofische teksten voor de cultuurgeschiedenis van het Westen. \nDit zijn allemaal grote thema’s die in een lezing niet veel meer dan samengevat kunnen worden\, ook al omdat Henk Singor graag voldoende ruimte wil laten voor vragen en discussie. \nOver de spreker\nDr. Henk Singor studeerde Geschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Na enkele jaren in het middelbaar onderwijs te hebben gewerkt\, was hij van 1980 tot 2012 als docent Oude Geschiedenis verbonden aan de Universiteit Leiden. In 1988 promoveerde hij daar op een proefschrift over Ontstaan en Betekenis van de Hoplietenphalanx in het Archaïsche Griekenland. DESCRIPTION:The National Archives\, UK are offering a new series of online workshops in archival skills aimed at postgraduate students on a variety of themes.  On 2nd May (14:00-17:00 BST) we are running a workshop that introduces some of the sources and techniques that allow the study of ‘global biographies’ \nThe records at the National Archives of the United Kingdom offer a uniquely rich insight into the histories of the global movement of people in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These records reflect the values of personhood held by the British state in relation to race\, class and gender\, however\, a richer variety of individuals are ‘legible’ in our documents than is sometimes realised. This workshop aims to bring together historians who apply a longue durée perspective in their research or are contemplating starting a longue durée project. It primarily focusses on the particularities of doing longue durée research and invites the participants to reflect on their methods and share their best practices. Some questions that are likely to be explored are: How to select a strong corpus of sources? How to recognise and study (dis)continuity? And how much contextualisation is enough? \nThe workshop is led by Annelien de Dijn\, Professor of Modern Political History at Utrecht University and author of the longue durée history and award-winning book Freedom: An Unruly History (2020). She will give the participants a unique glimpse into the making of her book and share some concrete examples of how she has applied a longue durée perspective. Later historians\, however\, used to praise him as “educator of the German nation” and “Prussia’s greatest inner king”. SUMMARY:Lunch Seminar Lucas Poy: Social Democracy and the Limits of Internationalism in the Interwar Period
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, scholars of the anti-Communist and social democratic tradition developed an interpretation in which socialist internationalism is no longer portrayed as opposed to nationalism\, but rather as complementary. This allowed them to move away from older perspectives and to examine the main features of international cooperation among socialists under a more positive light. Its substantial and convincing contributions notwithstanding\, this literature also displays important shortcomings. Not only does it minimize the challenge that nationalism did pose to transnational solidarities: it is also too focused on Europe and therefore overlooks a more serious limit to internationalism\, namely a perspective that proclaimed a principle of colour-blind solidarity among all peoples of the world\, but in practice built a much more limited transnational community of workers either born in Europe or from European descent. \nIn this presentation I complicate our knowledge of socialist internationalism in the 1920s by exploring a unique and under-researched event\, the “World Migration Congress” organized in London in 1926 by the International Federation of Trade Unions and the Labour and Socialist International. Drawing on the idea that international organizations and meetings can be used as ‘observation points’ for studying global history\, I use the prolegomena\, the preparations\, and the discussions of this congress as a lens to understand the stances of socialist parties and reformist trade unions regarding the question of migration in the 1920s\, explaining to what extent\, and for what reason\, they have changed in comparison with the pre-war period. SUMMARY:Publiek gesprek: ‘Democratie en Omgangsvormen’
DESCRIPTION:De discussie over de omgangsvormen in de Tweede Kamer doet al geruime tijd veel stof opwaaien. Moeten er grenzen getrokken worden ter verdediging van het redelijke debat en dus van de democratie? Of is de toegankelijkheid van het debat in de Kamer belangrijker en staat de vrijheid van meningsuiting boven alles?\nRecentelijk vindt in deze discussie een kentering plaats. Waar sinds de opkomst van Pim Fortuyn de gedachte dat alles gezegd moet kunnen worden domineerde\, is er tegenwoordig meer aandacht voor het gevaar van democratische ondermijning door uitspraken in de Kamer. Deze kentering wordt vaak beschouwd als een reactie op veranderende ‘omgangsvormen’\, maar is dat wel terecht? Met andere woorden: gaat het hier om de verdediging van ‘fatsoen’ als waarde of worden basisregels van democratie overtreden? Een zekere mate van onfatsoen en afwijking van pure redelijkheid hoort misschien wel bij een open democratische politiek. Mogelijk staren we ons blind op de toon van het debat en is het belangrijker om naar de inhoud te kijken van wat gezegd wordt. Of gebeurt dit de laatste tijd al\, en is dat de kentering die we waarnemen?\nOver deze kwestie organiseren we een publiek gesprek. Niet zozeer een debat met tegenover elkaar (vast)staande meningen\, maar een verkenning van een probleem dat cruciaal is voor de democratie. DESCRIPTION:Op 23 maart a.s. organiseert het Infocentrum WO2 Nijmegen een lezingen- en debatavond over enerzijds de geallieerde plunderingen in het Rijk van Nijmegen in 1944-1945 en anderzijds de plunderingen in vroegere oorlogen én in de hedendaagse actualiteit\, zoals in Oekraïne. \nAl zolang oorlogen bestaan\, wordt er geplunderd. Ook geallieerde soldaten maakten zich tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog schuldig aan plundering. Maar waarom deden ze dat op het grondgebied van een bevriende natie? Amerikanen\, Britten en Canadezen – roofden niet alleen uit woonhuizen\, maar ook uit fabrieken\, hotels\, banken\, kloosters en kerken. Ze trokken in het Rijk van Nijmegen vrijwel alle gebouwen leeg. Wat bezielde deze militairen? \nDr. Paul H.M. Thissen zal u hierover als eerste spreker inzicht geven. Hij is gepromoveerd als historisch geograaf en werkzaam bij de provincie Gelderland als regisseur Erfgoed. Hij publiceert geregeld over de historische geografie van de regio rond Nijmegen. Zijn verhaal verwijst naar het recentelijk verschenen boek Bezet\, bevrijd & geplunderd (mede van zijn hand en verkrijgbaar op deze avond) en de gelijknamige tentoonstelling die op dit moment te zien is in het Vrijheidsmuseum (t/m 9 april 2023. \nAls tweede spreker zal militair-historicus en publicist dr. Christ Klep een bijdrage leveren door in te gaan op het thema ‘plunderingen’ zoals dit dwars door de geschiedenis heen welig tierde en heden ten dage nog springlevend is in oorlogs- en crisisgebieden. Klep is verbonden aan het Instituut voor Militaire Geschiedenis als universitair docent en onderzoeker\, alsook adviseur van het Ministerie van Buitenlandse zaken. He focused on the way Dutch immigrant populations are ‘datafied’ by various societal institutions. Dutch governmental classifications are based on immigrants’ former nationality and that of their parents and often relate to the colonial history of the Netherlands or their country of birth. SUMMARY:History Things: The Gallic Past and French Historical Research in the Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth Century – Public lecture by Lisa Regazzoni (Bielefeld)
DESCRIPTION:Adopting a fresh perspective\, my research takes on the task of rethinking the field of knowledge dealing with the “Gallic past” in French discourse in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Instead of first buckling down to the analysis of historical narratives surrounding the Gallic past\, it tackles the monument\, the historical evidence that underpinned and verified insights into that past. Spotlighting the monument for the first time as an epistemic object\, it explores its impressive semantic enhancement in the course of the eighteenth century and the concomitant epistemic practices involved in constructing the Gallic past. \nFrom this vantage point\, my research wants to offer a pioneering contribution to a historical epistemology yet to be written\, one that focuses on the historicity of the respective epoch-specific “species” of evidence. The single-minded pursuit of monuments prompts a gaze shift to the French provinces\, where material and immaterial testimonies of the Gallic past were “discovered” and processed into epistemic objects. The “provincializing” of Paris as a site of knowledge production ensues\, shedding light on the crucial role of provincial erudition\, as seen not merely in the “invention” of the Gallic past but also in methodological and epistemological renewal. What follows is a revision of the historiography of recent decades\, which has interpreted the narrative of an “autochthonous” pre-Roman past either as nation building or identity creation. With rare exceptions\, the real purpose of these narratives produced with and around Gallic monuments was to brace ecumenical\, Christian-apologetic\, universalist (and anti-Gallic!) views or parochial claims. \nNo registration is needed\, unless you want to participate online. DESCRIPTION:In de zomer van 2022 werd het duidelijk: het migratiebeleid piept en kraakt. Maar is dit het gevolg van de hoge instroom? Of een gevolg van falend en warrig overheidsbeleid? \nDit evenement wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met het Nederlands Genootschap voor Internationale Zaken (NGIZ). \nDe Europese Commissie werkt aan een nieuw asiel- en migratiepact. Het zogenoemde Dublin­systeem zou vervangen moeten worden door een nieuw asiel- en migratie­beheersysteem waarbij asiel­aanvragen beter over de lidstaten worden gespreid. Ook zou er meer in asielprocedures en grensbewaking moeten worden geïnvesteerd. Maar is dit voldoende of moet de Europese Unie harder ingrijpen? En welke middelen heeft de Nederlandse overheid om zelf in te grijpen? SUMMARY:Gezondheidszorg: Trekt de provincie ons uit het bestuurlijk moeras?
DESCRIPTION:We gaan stemmen op 15 maart aanstaande.\nIn aanloop naar de provinciale verkiezingen verzorgt perscentrum Nieuwspoort in samenwerking met het Montesquieu Instituut drie debatten over Stikstof (maandag 30 januari)\,  Wonen (maandag 13 februari) en Gezondheidszorg (maandag 27 februari). \nOp maandag 27 februari is het de beurt aan Gezondheidszorg\nRegionalisering zou het Ei van Columbus zijn voor de vastlopende gezondheidszorg. Deskundigen twijfelen; er zijn meer voor de hand liggende oplossingen. Kan de provincie een centrale rol aan? Debat met Harry van der Maas (gedeputeerde Zeeland\, SGP)\, Carin Gaemers (historicus\, voormalig Nieuwspoort-rapporteur\, co-auteur Zorgmanifest)\, Fleur Agema (PVV-Tweede Kamerlid) en Willem Wansink(journalist). Moderator Lars Geerts (NOS). \nIn deze debatserie wordt op zoek gegaan naar het antwoord waarom het maar niet lukt om de grote maatschappelijke thema’s op te lossen. Waarom lopen noodzakelijke veranderingen vast in het bestuurlijk moeras? Steeds gaan een bestuurder\, politicus\, wetenschappelijk deskundige en een journalist met elkaar in gesprek. SUMMARY:RMA Course – Back to the Source: Political History Unravelled
DESCRIPTION:Every Friday from 24 February until 31 March\, 10-13.00h\nSupervisor: Dr. Carla Hoetink (Radboud University; RSPH/OPG Director of Studies) \n\n\n\nLong gone are the days when political history was only described from official state documents. In today’s historical practice a great deal of attention is paid to multi-perspectivity\, seeking opportunities to hear different voices. No one doubts the relevance of looking beyond the text and incorporating visual\, auditory and material sources. In addition\, new approaches and rapidly developing digital techniques shed fresh light on classical sources and open different possibilities for organizing\, analyzing and presenting sources on a larger scale. What does this mean for writing political history today? \nIn this course\, students develop a broad view of the potential of resources to analyze the history of politics and the political. Students also learn to critically reflect on the limitations of various types of sources\, archives\, and datasets\, and to recognize their ‘political’ nature. What were the roles of e.g. the state and social movements in collecting and archiving materials? What blank spots does this leave in the archives and analyses?

SUMMARY:Tutorial Sources
DESCRIPTION:Supervisor: Dr. Marijke van Faassen (Huygens Institute) \nThe increasing use of digital techniques for researching both analogue and digital texts\, archival sources and data clouds requires a new research methodology in which traditional knowledge is closely interwoven with digital skills. In this tutorial\, an interdisciplinary team of political historians and information scientists will use case studies from their research to provide insight into this current methodological discussion and to more practically discuss ways to find\, criticize\, contextualise and finally prepare such complex sources to use them for research. To prepare for the tutorial\, the PhD-students are requested to write a text in whichthey describe the digital and ‘paper’ sources they use in their research and reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of using them. During the tutorial\, there will be ample time to interactively discuss the problems they experience and to create awareness for alternative sources to work around the problems they face.
