SUMMARY:Tyranny and Terror
DESCRIPTION:Character assassination and antiliberalism often go hand in hand. Two distinguished British historians will speak about character assassination and antiliberal elements in the 1800s. While Enlightenment ideals led to a surge of liberalism and sparked the birth of Europe’s first liberal democracies\, these developments also triggered strong counter reactions. \n\n\n\n\nOn the occasion of the interdisciplinary conference “Character Assassination\, Illiberalism\, and the Erosion of Civic Rights” (UvA\, 21-23 June)\, two distinguished British historians will speak about character assassination and antiliberal elements in the 1800s. Simon Burrows will discuss French diplomats in London in the decades leading up to the French Revolution\, exploring how these men experienced acts of character assassination and attempted to manage their reputations\, as well as that of the French government. The overzealous French response to these character attacks helped to promote an image of France as a despotic and illiberal state which sought to extend its power well beyond its borders. \nNext\, Marisa Linton will focus on the bloody period known as ‘the Terror’ (1793-94)\, when the newly-forged democratic order created by the revolutionaries\, based on the principles of freedom\, equality and the advancement of human rights\, was undermined by the recourse to terror. France’s leaders were not exempt from the harsh laws they themselves had enacted; many were denounced as ‘traitors’ and lost their lives under the guillotine. What circumstances led them to turn on one another with such fatal consequences? \nLocation: Spui25\, Amsterdam \nFurther information and registration.

SUMMARY:Oratie prof. dr. S. Ferente: Girls’ stories and the ‘global Middle Ages’
DESCRIPTION:Middeleeuwse geschiedenis wordt ‘global’.

SUMMARY:Conference: Character Assassination\, Illiberalism\, and the Erosion of Civic Rights
DESCRIPTION:Liberal democracies face multiple external challenges from autocracies across the world\, as well as internal challenges from populist politicians\, nativism\, and the normalization of incivility in media and political discourses. Character assassination (CA) often accompanies these political and social conflicts\, especially when unresolved ideological and moral issues are involved. Social conflicts become aggravated when moral issues intermix with political and economic factors. Factions then resort to persuasive attacks on character to delegitimize and disempower their opponents. This increased polarization and aggressiveness of elite rhetoric likely foster voters’ cynicism and discontent with politics as usual. The increasing gap between liberal elites and the disgruntled electorate\, in turn\, likely provides even more fertile ground for intra-elite conflict\, and paves the way for illiberal conceptions of the democratic order. \nKeynote speakers\nDr. Marlene Laruelle\, Director of the Illiberalism Studies Program and the Institute for European\, Russian and Eurasian Studies (IERES)\, The George Washington University: https://www.marlene-laruelle.com/ \nProf. em. SUMMARY:Conference | Parliament Contested? Rethinking the relationship between national politics\, global crises\, and pressure from below in the 1970s
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this conference is to reassess the role of national parliaments and national policy-making processes in the 1970s in light of the increasing global challenges and extra-parliamentary pressure that occurred. What can be seen as decisive turning points shaping the political history of the era? Were they the same in each country\, or did they differ from state to state? And in what way and to what extent were these defining moments and events related to citizen activism\, national political factors and cross-border actors or influences respectively? Furthermore\, what do our findings tell us about politics in the 1970s\, also in relation to the ‘revolutionary’ 1960s and the ‘neoliberal’ 1980s? \nWith this call for papers\, we invite scholars who are interested to participate in this conference to submit an abstract of their paper (400 words). The deadline for submission is 6 January 2023. Applicants will be informed before 20 January 2022. \nTo stimulate discussion and foster an atmosphere of collaboration\, we will circulate preliminary papers beforehand. Therefore\, we kindly ask contributors to submit a draft of their paper (3000-5000 words) before 20 May 2023. Abstracts and preliminary papers should be in English and can be send to secretariaat.cpg@ru.nl. \nFor more information about the Conference and the Call for papers: Call for papers (pdf\, 385 kB)

SUMMARY:Diversity of Belonging in Europe
DESCRIPTION:Belonging – or not belonging – lies at the core of many of the recent ‘crises’ and ongoing processes of change that continue to shape as well as to shake up contemporary Europe. New forms of socio-spatial inclusion and exclusion have been both embraced and contested – and always (re)negotiated – as part of ongoing processes of social change\, connected to migration and displacement\, post-socialism and decolonisation\, populism and polarisation. \n\n\n\n\nThe new book Diversity of Belonging in Europe\, co-edited by Susannah Eckersley and Claske Vos\, analyses conflicting notions of identity and belonging in contemporary Europe. Addressing the creation\, negotiation and (re)use of diverse spaces and places of belonging\, the book examines their fascinating complexities in the context of a changing Europe. Taking an innovative interdisciplinary approach\, the book examines renegotiations of belonging played out through cultural encounters with difference and change\, in diverse public spaces and contested places. Highlighting the interconnections between social change and of culture\, heritage and memory\, chapters analyse multi-layered public spaces and the negotiations over culture and belonging that are connected to them. \nDuring this event Susannah Eckersley and Claske Vos will discuss their book with Elisabeth Niklasson\, Sharon Macdonald and Irene Stengs\, exploring new directions in the research on belonging in Europe related to wider questions of heritage\, memory and public space. \nLocation: Spui25\, Amsterdam \nFurther information and registration.

SUMMARY:Symposium: Die Niederlande\, Deutschland und Europa in Zeiten des Abnehmenden Friedens
DESCRIPTION:Am 15. \nProgramm 15. SUMMARY:NIAS Talk: Dutch Colonies of Benevolence
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, the UNESCO World Heritage recognized the lasting cultural significance of the unfree ‘colony of benevolence’ at Veenhuizen (now home to the National Prison Museum). This round table brings together three leading researchers on domestic colonies to discuss the international significance of this colony\, which opened its doors 200 years ago. \n\n\n\n\nThis round table with Professor Barbara Arneil discusses the political ideology behind this domestic colony. In her prize-winning book Domestic Colonies (Oxford University Press\, 2017)\, Arneil has argued that domestic colonies shared in common with overseas settler colonies a similar ideological commitment to three key principles: segregation; agrarian labour; and improvement of both people and land\, in both ethical and economic senses. \nAcross Europe\, domestic colonies attracted progressive thinkers sincerely concerned about the plight of the poor\, committed to improving their welfare. From Johannes van den Bosch in the Netherlands and Sir John Sinclair in Scotland\, to Alexis de Tocqueville in France and Jeremy Bentham in England. All of them wrote essays defending such domestic colonies over alternative social policies (e.g.\, outdoor relief\, emigration\, workhouses and poorhouses\, prison barracks). Yet as the colonies evolved and its inhabitants swelled in numbers\, the colonies often acquired disciplinary and sometimes outright penal dimensions. What is the place of free and unfree colonies of benevolence in the history of social welfare policy? This round-table explores this question by placing the Dutch Colonies of Benevolence within their wider international context. \nLocation: Spui25\, Amsterdam \nFurther information and registration.

SUMMARY:Roundtable conversation: Reparations\, Lessons from the Past\, Challenges for the Future
DESCRIPTION:On 11 May\, this multidisciplinary event on reparations will bring together practitioners\, scholars\, and students\, in the year that marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Rome Statute (1998)\, which led to the creation of the International Criminal Court and the Trust Fund for Victims. \nParticipants will be invited to reflect about how reparations have changed in the course of the twentieth and twenty-first century\, and how they will continue to be shaped by diplomatic\, legal and academic consideration\, State and individual responsibility\, and victim agency. \nReparations\nToday\, we almost take it as a given that survivors of severe forms of violence deserve some kind of reparation. The imperative to repair is an important principle in international law – one sanctioned by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 60/147 calling for “adequate\, effective and prompt reparation” in the wake of mass atrocities. \nBut the understanding that victims of mass human rights abuses deserve some form of reparation is a relatively recent one. And it underwent crucial shifts in the course of the twentieth century. But how do reparation programmes come to be? How can one assess their reparative value? To what extent can a historical perspective be of help when trying to gauge the present and future viability of reparative justice? \nRoundtable and debate\nDistinguished professor Beatrice de Graaf (History and Global Governance) will chair a roundtable discussion with: Lorena De Vita (History of International Relations)\, Thijs Bouwknegt (NIOD\, Institute for War\, Holocaust and Genocide Studies)\, Julie Fraser (Netherlands Institute of Human Rights)\, Fabián Salvioli (UN Special Rapporteur on Truth\, Justice and Reparation) (tbc)\, and Henk-Cor van der Kwast (Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the International Criminal Court). \nPieter de Baan from the International Criminal Court’s Trust Fund for Victims will lead a public debate and provide closing remarks\, followed by a short reception. \nThe event is organised by Lorena De Vita as part of her research project Holocaust Diplomacy: the Global Politics of Memory and Forgetting\, in partnership with the Alfred Landecker Foundation and the ICC Trust Fund for Victims. \nLocation: Aula\, University Hall\, Utrecht \nRegister for the event here

SUMMARY:Lecture: Islam\, Democracy and Development
DESCRIPTION:Is Islam compatible with Western political and socioeconomic institutions? If yes\, what explains the problems of authoritarianism and underdevelopment in many Muslim-majority countries? In this year’s acmes annual lecture\, Ahmet Kuru will address these questions by referring to his award-winning book Islam\, Authoritarianism\, and Underdevelopment: A Global and Historical Comparison (Cambridge University Press\, 2019). \n\n\n\n\nIn his lecture Ahmet Kuru will speak about the premises of his book Islam\, Authoritarianism\, and Underdevelopment\, which will be published in Dutch with the title Bloeiperiode en hedendaagse crisis in de moslimwereld (Ertsberg) in May 2023. Kuru will elaborate an argument about the ulema-state alliance as the cause of authoritarianism and underdevelopment in the Muslim world from the eleventh century to the present. Criticizing essentialist\, post-colonialist\, and new institutionalist explanations\, Kuru focuses on the relations between intellectual\, economic\, religious\, and political classes in this annual lecture. \nFurther information and registration. \nLocation: Spui25\, Amsterdam

SUMMARY:Schuman lecture Maastricht University: Learning to learn from history
DESCRIPTION:Until the Second World War\, remembering the past in Europe only served to glorify the nation\, stir up revanchism and sanctify heroes. After 1945\, the trauma of war\, totalitarianism\, and the Holocaust gave rise to a new ambition: that of learning from history. But has this succeeded? \nA decade or two ago\, that memory began to crumble\, abandoned by indifferent younger generations and mutilated by falsifiers of history eager to impose new nationalist narratives based on hatred. As memory fades\, so does vigilance. People forget that peace\, democracy and freedom are a heritage that must be tirelessly protected and nurtured. People forget the countless sacrifices they have demanded of entire generations. You believe that these achievements are given unchangeably\, like the air you breathe. \nThen one morning you wake up and there is a war going on. \nGéraldine Schwarz is a German-French writer\, journalist and documentary filmmaker. After working as a German correspondent for the news agency AFP\, she now publishes in various international media. For her book Les Amnésiques\, she received many awards\, including the European Book Prize in 2018. It is translated into more than ten languages\, a.o. German: Die Gedächtnislosen and English: Those Who Forget.\nIn this book she follows three generations of her family. She traces back the painful process of coming to terms with the past in Germany\, which she sees as a cornerstone of democracy. How did Germans transform collective guilt into democratic responsibility? Schwarz compares it to the work of remembering in France\, Italy\, and Eastern Europe. With populism and extremism on the rise in Europe today\, she reflects on how society can become complicit in political crime and how to learn better from history. \nSchuman Lecture\nEvery year\, Maastricht University and the City of Maastricht jointly organise this lecture in commemoration of Robert Schuman and the Treaties of Rome (1957) and Maastricht (1992). Robert Schuman (1886-1963) was the French Minister of Foreign Affairs and co-founder of the European Union. \nYou can register here \n\n\n\nLocation\nFranz Palm Lecture Hall\nTongersestraat 53\nMaastricht\, Nederland \n\n\n\n\nDate: Tuesday 9 May\, 20:00

SUMMARY:Lecture | Liberal Worldmaking and the Imaginative Geography of Sex Trafficking – Jeanne Morefield (Oxford)
DESCRIPTION:Date and time: 9 May 2023\, 16.00-17.30\nPlace: Utrecht\, room: Drift 23\, 0.12 \nNo registration is needed\, unless you want to participate online. In that case\, send an e-mail to: info@globalintellectualhistory.org. \nAbstract\nSince the late 1990’s\, global attention to the issue of human trafficking (particularly sex trafficking) has skyrocketed within international institutions and among fascist aspiring conspiracy theorists.  This talk turns to the last period in global history when international anti–trafficking campaigns were this widespread\, the interwar era. I focus on how liberal internationalist supporters of the League of Nations used the putatively “non–political” issue of the “traffic in women and children” to negotiate tensions in the League’s world vision between its universal rhetoric and its ongoing commitment to racial hierarchy and imperialism. Rather than focus on how trafficking helped League internationalists deflect attention away from this disconnect\, however\, I draw upon Edward Said’s notion of “imaginative geography” to better understand the generative quality of trafficking. Read in this light\, an investigation of the League’s archives reveals a complex discursive and bureaucratic process of knowledge production about a globe–spanning\, criminal underworld – populated by anti–Semitic caricatures of traffickers and helpless victims – against which the League could invent and instantiate itself. A closer interrogation of interwar\, anti–trafficking politics thus has much to tell us about the relationship between world making and underworld making in the liberal internationalism imaginary\, and about the overlap between that imaginary and the dreamworld of fascism\, both then and now. \nBiography\nJeanne Morefield is an Associate Professor of Political Theory at the University of Oxford\, a Fellow at New College (Oxford)\, and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Quincy Institute. Her scholarship sits at the intersection of political theory\, international relations\, and intellectual history with a particular focus on the relationship between liberalism\, imperialism\, and internationalism in Britain and America. She is the author of Covenants Without Swords: Idealist Liberalism and the Spirit of Empire (2005)\, Empires Without Imperialism: Anglo American Decline and the Politic of Deflection (2014) and Unsettling the World: Edward Said and Political Theory (2022).  Her next book project\, Underworld\, examines the role of sex trafficking panics in the shared global imaginaries of liberalism and fascism. Morefield’s popular work has appeared in The Boston Review\, Jacobin\, Responsible Statecraft\, and The New Statesman.

SUMMARY:International Symposium: The Dutch Colonies of Benevolence in international context
DESCRIPTION:Exactly 200 years ago\, the agricultural colony at Veenhuizen was first opened. Established as a social experiment to combat poverty\, re-educate people\, and transform wasteland into productive agricultural land\, the Colony housed thousands of poor families\, vagrants\, orphans\, widows\, and criminals for decades. Because of their great cultural-historical importance\, the Dutch and Flemish Colonies of Benevolence were granted the UNESCO World Heritage status in 2021. \nThis day-long public symposium celebrates both the 200th anniversary and the newly acquired World Heritage status. Fifteen leading national and international researchers will together discuss the Colonies from multidisciplinary angles. From poverty alleviation to punishment. From landscaping to architecture. And from the underlying economic model to the ideas of founder Johannes van den Bosch. Along the way\, the Dutch Colonies of Benevolence will be compared to other19th-century agricultural colonies – in Belgium\, France\, Italy\, Great Britain\, South Africa and elsewhere. In which ways were the Dutch agricultural colonies of Benevolence unique? \nWith:\nBarbara Arneil (UBC) – Anne Brunon Ernst (Paris) – Geertje Bernaerts (Karvansera) – Iain Mackinnon (Coventry) – Paul Meurs (Steenhuismeurs) – Sabrina Puddu (Leuven) – Colin Ripley (Toronto) – Angelie Sens (Amsterdam) – Freek Schmidt (VU) – Hanneke Stuit (UvA) – Vincent Tassenaar & Richard Paping (both Rijksuniversiteit Groningen) – Stephen Toth (Arizona) – Craig Whittall (London) \nThe symposium will be in English. SUMMARY:4-mei lezing: In verzet
Ismee Tames (UU). \nWanneer komen mensen in verzet? \n\n\n\n\nWanneer: 4 mei 2023 20:30-21.30\nLocatie: Academiegebouw (Aula)\, Domplein 29\, Utrecht\nEntree: Gratis\nAanmelden: Niet nodig. SUMMARY:Merlijnlezing: Constantinopel en de Eerste Jihad\, 633-718.
DESCRIPTION:Dr. SUMMARY:Online archival training for students in global history and biography (National Archives\, UK)
DESCRIPTION:The National Archives\, UK are offering a new series of online workshops in archival skills aimed at postgraduate students on a variety of themes.  On 2nd May (14:00-17:00 BST) we are running a workshop that introduces some of the sources and techniques that allow the study of ‘global biographies’ \nThe records at the National Archives of the United Kingdom offer a uniquely rich insight into the histories of the global movement of people in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These records reflect the values of personhood held by the British state in relation to race\, class and gender\, however\, a richer variety of individuals are ‘legible’ in our documents than is sometimes realised. This workshop focusses on groups whose lives are less well documented but whose journeys are nonetheless captured by our collections. \nThe workshop will offer: \n\nCase studies exploring the range of TNA records that facilitate biographical study.\nDemonstrations and exercises in using the most fruitful sources for tracing individuals.\nIntroduction to specialist tools and techniques for researching biographies.\nA ‘sandbox’ session where you can explore these tools in relation to your own research projects.\n\nMore information and booking can be found on eventbrite – please see the link: PAST Thematic Overview: Modern Global History & Biography Registration\, Tue 2 May 2023 at 14:00 | Eventbrite\nContact Email: past@nationalarchives.gov.uk

SUMMARY:Workshop ‘The Longue Durée Perspective’
DESCRIPTION:11 April 2023\, 13:30-17:30 (followed by drinks)\nUtrecht University\, Kromme Nieuwegracht 80\, Van Ravesteynzaal (1.06)\nRegister here \nAbstract\nHow do you do longue durée history? This workshop aims to bring together historians who apply a longue durée perspective in their research or are contemplating starting a longue durée project. It primarily focusses on the particularities of doing longue durée research and invites the participants to reflect on their methods and share their best practices. Some questions that are likely to be explored are: How to select a strong corpus of sources? How to recognise and study (dis)continuity? And how much contextualisation is enough? \nThe workshop is led by Annelien de Dijn\, Professor of Modern Political History at Utrecht University and author of the longue durée history and award-winning book Freedom: An Unruly History (2020). She will give the participants a unique glimpse into the making of her book and share some concrete examples of how she has applied a longue durée perspective. The workshop is organised by Anne Por and Edurne De Wilde (PhD candidates at Leiden University)\nThe aim of this interactive workshop is to give researchers an opportunity to exchange thoughts about longue durée history with an expert and learn from each other. \nProgramme \n13.30-15.00: Opening\nRound of introductions including shortly addressing the prepared questions (see preparatory assignment below)\nThe possibilities and limitations of longue durée history\nDiscussion of the assigned texts \n15.00-15.30: Break \n15.30-17.30: Longue durée expertise\nAnnelien de Dijn on the making of Freedom: An Unruly History\nQ&A \n17.30: Drinks \nReadings (will be made available by the Huizinga Institute)\n• Armitage\, David. “What’s the Big Idea? Intellectual History and the Longue Durée.” History of European Ideas 38\, no. 4 (2012): 493-507.\n• De Dijn\, Annelien. “Introduction: An Elusive Concept.” Introduction in Freedom. An Unruly History\, Cambridge: Harvard University Press\, 2020. \nPreparatory assignment\nWe ask all participants to prepare their answer(s) to the following questions: Have you come across practical issues in your own longue durée research? How did you deal with or solve these difficulties? Or\, what type of problems do you think you might encounter? \nECTS\nECTS are not standard issued after this workshop. We do however offer the option of participating for 1 ECTS with an extra assignment. Are you interested in participating for 1 ECTS? Please inform the Huizinga Institute via huizinga@uu.nl to receive more information on the extra assignment.

SUMMARY:Conference: Parliament contested?
\nLocation: Radboud University \nMore information.

SUMMARY:Lecture Barbara Sollberg-Rilinger: King Frederick William I of Prussia and the History of Masculinity
DESCRIPTION:On 31 March\, Professor of Early Modern History Barbara Stollberg-Rilinger (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster) will give the lecture ‘King Frederick William I of Prussia and the History of Masculinity: Challenges of Biographical Writing’. \nThe suggestive power of retrospective rationalisation\nFrederick William I\, king of Prussia (1713-1740)\, called himself a tyrant\, and most of his contemporaries would have agreed. Later historians\, however\, used to praise him as “educator of the German nation” and “Prussia’s greatest inner king”. His biography not only offers an insight into the social logic of autocracy and the transformation of masculinity. It is also an exemplary case to demonstrate the malleability of history and the suggestive power of retrospective rationalisation. \nLocation: Janskerkhof 2-3\, room 0.21 \nRegistration: Please send an email to Jip Lettink (j.lettink@uu.nl) \nMore information: Download the flyer

SUMMARY:Lunch Seminar Lucas Poy: Social Democracy and the Limits of Internationalism in the Interwar Period
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, scholars of the anti-Communist and social democratic tradition developed an interpretation in which socialist internationalism is no longer portrayed as opposed to nationalism\, but rather as complementary. This allowed them to move away from older perspectives and to examine the main features of international cooperation among socialists under a more positive light. Its substantial and convincing contributions notwithstanding\, this literature also displays important shortcomings. Not only does it minimize the challenge that nationalism did pose to transnational solidarities: it is also too focused on Europe and therefore overlooks a more serious limit to internationalism\, namely a perspective that proclaimed a principle of colour-blind solidarity among all peoples of the world\, but in practice built a much more limited transnational community of workers either born in Europe or from European descent. \nIn this presentation I complicate our knowledge of socialist internationalism in the 1920s by exploring a unique and under-researched event\, the “World Migration Congress” organized in London in 1926 by the International Federation of Trade Unions and the Labour and Socialist International. Drawing on the idea that international organizations and meetings can be used as ‘observation points’ for studying global history\, I use the prolegomena\, the preparations\, and the discussions of this congress as a lens to understand the stances of socialist parties and reformist trade unions regarding the question of migration in the 1920s\, explaining to what extent\, and for what reason\, they have changed in comparison with the pre-war period. Moreover\, I also show that these stances were intertwined in many ways with perspectives on colonialism and condescending views of the ‘coloured peoples’ of the world. \nThis seminar will be given by Lucas Poy. \nLocation: Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam\, Forum 7 (HG-1D09) \nTo attend this seminar\, please send an email to m.bakkes@student.vu.nl

SUMMARY:Publiek gesprek: ‘Democratie en Omgangsvormen’
DESCRIPTION:De discussie over de omgangsvormen in de Tweede Kamer doet al geruime tijd veel stof opwaaien. Anne Petterson\, Radboud Universiteit; dr.

SUMMARY:Lezingen- en debatavond - Infocentrum WO2 Nijmegen
“Lezing Plunder” of telefonisch via 024-3974404. \nTijd: 19:30 (19:00 Inloop) Einde: 21.45 \nLocatie: Infocentrum WO2 Nijmegen\, Ridderstraat 27\, 6511 TM Nijmegen \nInformatie: 024-3974404 of welkom@infocentrumwo2.nl \nWebsite: www.infocentrumwo2.nl

SUMMARY:CDH Webinar: The datafication of race-ethnicity in Dutch governmental databases
DESCRIPTION:For his PhD research\, Gerwin van Schie delved into the data systems of Dutch government bodies to look at the algorithms used there. He focused on the way Dutch immigrant populations are ‘datafied’ by various societal institutions. Dutch governmental classifications are based on immigrants’ former nationality and that of their parents and often relate to the colonial history of the Netherlands or their country of birth. During this webinar\, he will talk about the results and the methods he has used. \nMore info & registration: Centre for Digital Humanities | CDH webinar: The datafication of race-ethnicity in Dutch governmental databases (uu.nl)
