SUMMARY:Workshop: Constructing Citizens\, Portraying the People
DESCRIPTION:International transfer and mediatized\, scientized and politicized constructions of ‘the people’ in 20th century Northwestern Europe \nThursday 18 January 2024 – 9.00 AM – 5.30 PM Meeting  and Conference Centre Soeterbeeck \nWho are the people and what do they want\, think and feel? Throughout the twentieth century\, a strong preoccupation existed with determining the preferences – and elucidating the behavior – of citizens as audiences\, consumers or voters. In an effort to answer these questions\, a myriad of actors have constructed notions of ‘the people’: from social scientists to opinion pollsters and market researchers\, from political parties and spin-doctors to media makers\, from agencies in government planning to advertisers. Through practices such as opinion polling\, survey research and vox pops\, discourses on public behavior and opinion were articulated and disseminated\, often influencing how citizens understood themselves and those around them. As certain ideas about society and democracy underpin these constructions\, historians have in recent years become interested in shedding light on the histories of these constructions and their constructors. \nConstructions of ‘the people’ and generalizations of their preferences and opinions are often conceptualized as ‘public opinion’. In determining the processes that underlie these constructions\, various theoretical frameworks such as mediatization and scientization have proved to be thought-provoking points of departure. However\, oftentimes these frameworks invite us to only focus on the one-directional transfer of information from one sphere to another (for example from media or science to society or politics). This workshop aims to complicate such linear narratives and explore the ‘construction of citizens’ as a dynamic and continuous negotiation between a broad variety of constructors. Moreover\, as discussions often are limited to one national context\, we propose to explore the motivations of these constructors – and the discourse on ‘the people’ that they produced – in an internationally comparative and transnational perspective. DESCRIPTION:On 16 and 17 November 2023\, Posthumus alumni Dennis De Vriese (Vrije Universiteit Brussel)\, Nicholas Brunmayr (Université Libre de Bruxelles) and Robin Rose Southard (VUB) organise an international conference\, entitled ‘Food\, Rules and the City: Food Market Regulations and Their Social and Political Dynamics (15th-20th C.)’. \nSeeking to adopt such a long-term perspective and to explore more fully than before the social and political dynamics underlying these regulations\, this conference will bring together recent research into motivations\, reasoning and strategies applied by economic actors in the making of food market regulations in European cities from the 15th to the 20th century. De veranderende relaties tussen dieren en mensen zijn fascinerend en steeds vaker onderwerp van onderzoek. In het buitenland gebeurt er al veel\, maar ook in Nederland en België zijn er historici die zich met dieren bezighouden\, al vormen zij nog niet echt een eigen vakgebied. In de sociale geschiedenis\, wetenschapsgeschiedenis\, kunstgeschiedenis en geschiedenis van mondiale handel en reizen zijn bijvoorbeeld al verschillende dieren te vinden. \nDit VNVNG-congres wil onderzoekers uit de Lage Landen samenbrengen die zich richten op het vroegmoderne dier\, of\, preciezer: homo sapiens en niet-menselijke dieren in de geschiedenis van de Nederlanden 1500-1850. Hoe zijn historische relaties tussen mensen en ándere dieren te karakteriseren? Zegt diergeschiedenis vooral iets over de menselijke blik op het dier? Of is het ook mogelijk een dier-perspectief in te nemen? In hoeverre hadden dieren agency? Is er sprake van een animal turn in de geschiedenis? Is het tijd voor een aparte discipline? \nDeze en andere vragen worden beantwoord op vrijdag 27 oktober in Amsterdam. Een dozijn sprekers zal evenzoveel diersoorten presenteren. Lotte Jensen legt uit wat de nalatenschap van Napoleon in Nederland is geweest en hoe zijn heerschappij doorwerkt in de huidige tijd. \n\n\nDr. Olaf van Nimwegen\, militair historicus en schrijver van De Nederlandse Burgeroorlog (1748-1815)\, laat zien dat de strijd tussen de Patriotten aan de ene kant\, en het leger van stadhouder Willem V en zijn Pruisische bondgenoot aan de andere kant niet een militair onbeduidend conflict was\, zoals vaak wordt aangenomen. Is dit dan de geboorte van een nieuwe bestuurscultuur? \nOp het eerste gezicht belichamen partijen als BBB en NSC een nieuw type vertegenwoordiging. Pieter Omtzigt spreekt zich in zijn manifest uit voor beter bestuur en wil vooral de uitvoerende kant van politiek verbeteren. Ook heeft hij\, net als Caroline van der Plas\, een sterke regionale basis. Daarnaast richten beiden zich expliciet op de belangen van een specifieke groep\, namelijk burgers die klemzitten in het huidige bestuurlijke systeem. DESCRIPTION:Het ‘prachtig ryk van Insulinde dat zich daar slingert om den evenaar\, als een gordel van smaragd’. Met die woorden verheerlijkte Multatuli Nederlands-Indië in zijn Max Havelaar (1860). Vanaf de vroege negentiende eeuw trokken allerhande reizigers eropuit om het ‘moederland’ te informeren over het koloniale project. In de Jacob van Lenneplezing van dit jaar onderzoekt Rick Honings de indrukken en ervaringen die in hun reisverhalen zijn terug te vinden. \n\n\n\n\nIn de vroege negentiende eeuw\, na de ondergang van de VOC\, werd Indië voor het eerst een echte kolonie van Nederland. Vanaf dat moment gingen allerlei soorten reizigers op pad om de binnenlanden van Java\, Sumatra en de ‘buitengewesten’ te verkennen: natuuronderzoekers\, predikanten\, zendelingen\, taalgeleerden\, ambtenaren\, militairen en gelukszoekers\, en later ook vrouwen en toeristen. Zij schreven volop reisverhalen om het ‘moederland’ te informeren over het koloniale project. Hoe reisden ze in die periode in Indië? \nIn deze lezing volgen we drie negentiende-eeuwers op hun reis door de kolonie. De natuuronderzoeker Caspar Georg Carl Reinwardt was een van de eersten die na het Engels Tussenbestuur in 1816 de Indonesische archipel verkende. De Oostenrijkse wereldreiziger Ida Pfeiffer begaf zich met gevaar voor eigen leven tussen de ‘koppensnellers’ op Borneo. En de sigarenfabrikant en schrijver Justus van Maurik bezocht Java als een vroege toerist. Welke woorden gebruikten ze om uiting te geven aan hun ervaring van de tropen? Hoe presenteerden ze zichzelf in hun werk? En wat zeggen de publicaties van deze negentiende-eeuwers over hun manier van denken? \nOver de sprekers\nRick Honings is neerlandicus en Scaliger-hoogleraar aan het Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society. Met Peter van Zonneveld schreef hij een biografie van de dichter Willem Bilderdijk: De gefnuikte arend (2013). Daarnaast publiceerde hij onder meer de monografieën De dichter als idool. Literaire roem in de negentiende eeuw (2016) en Romantici en revolutionairen. Literatuur en schrijverschap in Nederland in de 18de en 19de eeuw (2019\, met Lotte Jensen). \nLotte Jensen is hoogleraar Nederlandse literatuur- en cultuurgeschiedenis aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. Ze is voorzitter van de Werkgroep De Moderne Tijd en publiceert over Nederlandse identiteitsvorming\, literatuur en geschiedenis. Haar meest recente publicatie is: Wij en het water. This Summer School prepares students to apply a multifaceted approach in writing political history. Students will delve into key historiographical debates and theories on politics from below\, democracy and political representation from a multidisciplinary perspective (history\, philosophy\, political science). The Summer School offers a discussion of recent research on citizen letters\, petitions\, protests and the mass media (printed press\, radio\, TV). In a workshop setting\, students are invited to work with various sources and methods to write political history from below. \nWriting Political History from Below \nAssessing the state-of-the-art in 2013\, Willibald Steinmetz and Heinz-Gerhard Haupt concluded that ‘governments\, monarchs\, parties\, or parliaments … still get the bulk of attention in many new political histories’. Although this still holds true today\, studying politics from below or at the intersection of the ‘formal political world of representation and the informal political world of everyday life’ (Lawrence 2009) has been on the up. Testimony to this is research by political historians on petitioning\, correspondence\, electoral culture\, public opinion formation\, popular culture\, the rise of the citizen-consumer\, and the mass media\, among other topics. In political theory and philosophy\, too\, the notion of ‘the people’ and bottom-up perspectives on political representation and democracy are en vogue. \nYet\, those interested in such approaches to political history are confronted with a range of challenges. First of all\, the lack of a shared vocabulary among political historians. Doing political history from below comes with a variety of concepts\, such as ‘popular politics’\, ‘the politics of everyday life’\, ‘subaltern politics’\, ‘ordinary politics’\, and ‘public politics’. Definitions often remain vague. Second\, a (supposed) lack of sources and representativeness: archives are highly geared towards offering access to high politics (institutional and personal archives) and the sources we do have are not equally distributed in terms of class\, gender\, ethnicity etc. Third\, the interaction between the formal and informal political world is often staged and mediated\, with the mass media playing a key role. \nThese challenges form the starting point for our summer school. First of all\, you will familiarize yourself with the key historiographical debates and theories on politics from below\, democracy and political representation from a multidisciplinary perspective (history\, philosophy\, political science). Second\, you will explore and discuss recent research on citizen letters\, petitions\, protests and the mass media (printed press\, radio\, TV) with a focus on Western Europe. Third\, you will get to work with various sources and methods to write political history from below and get the opportunity to formulate or finetune your own research ideas in a collaborative setting. While Enlightenment ideals led to a surge of liberalism and sparked the birth of Europe’s first liberal democracies\, these developments also triggered strong counter reactions. \n\n\n\n\nOn the occasion of the interdisciplinary conference “Character Assassination\, Illiberalism\, and the Erosion of Civic Rights” (UvA\, 21-23 June)\, two distinguished British historians will speak about character assassination and antiliberal elements in the 1800s. Simon Burrows will discuss French diplomats in London in the decades leading up to the French Revolution\, exploring how these men experienced acts of character assassination and attempted to manage their reputations\, as well as that of the French government. SUMMARY:Conference: Character Assassination\, Illiberalism\, and the Erosion of Civic Rights
DESCRIPTION:Liberal democracies face multiple external challenges from autocracies across the world\, as well as internal challenges from populist politicians\, nativism\, and the normalization of incivility in media and political discourses. Character assassination (CA) often accompanies these political and social conflicts\, especially when unresolved ideological and moral issues are involved. Social conflicts become aggravated when moral issues intermix with political and economic factors. Factions then resort to persuasive attacks on character to delegitimize and disempower their opponents. This increased polarization and aggressiveness of elite rhetoric likely foster voters’ cynicism and discontent with politics as usual. DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this conference is to reassess the role of national parliaments and national policy-making processes in the 1970s in light of the increasing global challenges and extra-parliamentary pressure that occurred. What can be seen as decisive turning points shaping the political history of the era? Were they the same in each country\, or did they differ from state to state? And in what way and to what extent were these defining moments and events related to citizen activism\, national political factors and cross-border actors or influences respectively? Furthermore\, what do our findings tell us about politics in the 1970s\, also in relation to the ‘revolutionary’ 1960s and the ‘neoliberal’ 1980s? \nWith this call for papers\, we invite scholars who are interested to participate in this conference to submit an abstract of their paper (400 words). The deadline for submission is 6 January 2023. Applicants will be informed before 20 January 2022. \nTo stimulate discussion and foster an atmosphere of collaboration\, we will circulate preliminary papers beforehand. SUMMARY:Lecture: Writing as Activism
DESCRIPTION:On 8 June\, the Centre for Environmental Humanities organises ‘Writing as Activism: Dutch Literature in the Climate Crisis’\, an event with award-winning writers Geert Buelens and Maarten van der Graaff. Buelens and Van der Graaff will read from their recent literary work and discuss how they bring environmental activism into their creative writing. \nThe readings will be in Dutch (English translations will be shown on screen if available)\, and the conversation will be held in English. \nGeert Buelens\nGeert Buelens is a poet and professor of Modern Dutch Literature at Utrecht University and guest professor at Stellenbosch University. He published four collections of poetry. Ofwa (2021) included a long poem about the climate crisis. His latest non-fiction book Wat we toen al wisten. De vergeten groene geschiedenis van 1972 (2022) deals with the history of environmental awareness\, activism\, politics\, and science. It was nominated for the Jan Wolkers Prize (for nature writing) and is the winner of the Boon Literature Prize (for best fiction or non-fiction book). \nMaarten van der Graaff\nMaarten van der Graaff (1987) is a writer and a poet. Vluchtautogedichten was published in 2013 and was awarded the C. Buddingh’ Prize for best debut poetry collection. Dood werk and Nederland in stukken\, two other collections of poetry\, were published in 2015 en in 2020. Van der Graaff is an editor and co-founder of Samplekanon\, an online literary magazine. He teaches creative writing at ArtEZ in Arnhem. SUMMARY:Diversity of Belonging in Europe
DESCRIPTION:Belonging – or not belonging – lies at the core of many of the recent ‘crises’ and ongoing processes of change that continue to shape as well as to shake up contemporary Europe. New forms of socio-spatial inclusion and exclusion have been both embraced and contested – and always (re)negotiated – as part of ongoing processes of social change\, connected to migration and displacement\, post-socialism and decolonisation\, populism and polarisation. \n\n\n\n\nThe new book Diversity of Belonging in Europe\, co-edited by Susannah Eckersley and Claske Vos\, analyses conflicting notions of identity and belonging in contemporary Europe. Addressing the creation\, negotiation and (re)use of diverse spaces and places of belonging\, the book examines their fascinating complexities in the context of a changing Europe. Taking an innovative interdisciplinary approach\, the book examines renegotiations of belonging played out through cultural encounters with difference and change\, in diverse public spaces and contested places. Highlighting the interconnections between social change and of culture\, heritage and memory\, chapters analyse multi-layered public spaces and the negotiations over culture and belonging that are connected to them. \nDuring this event Susannah Eckersley and Claske Vos will discuss their book with Elisabeth Niklasson\, Sharon Macdonald and Irene Stengs\, exploring new directions in the research on belonging in Europe related to wider questions of heritage\, memory and public space. \nLocation: Spui25\, Amsterdam \nFurther information and registration.

SUMMARY:Symposium: Die Niederlande\, Deutschland und Europa in Zeiten des Abnehmenden Friedens
DESCRIPTION:Am 15. Mai ist es genau 375 Jahre her\, dass 1648 in Münster mit dem spanisch-niederländischen Friedensvertrag der erste Teil des Westfälischen Friedens geschlossen wurde. Seitdem gelten Münster und Westfalen als Symbol für den Versuch in einer Welt von Einzelstaaten dauerhaft Frieden zu schaffen. Aus diesem Grund organisiert das ZNS\, in Kooperation mit der Stadt Münster und der Universiteit Utrecht (Niederlande) einen Tag der deutsch-niederländischen Begegnungen: Gemeinsam diskutieren wir über den Nachlass und Auftrag des (Westfälischen) Friedens im heutigen erneut vom Krieg berührten Europa. In einem plenaren Gespräch sprechen die Botschafter der beiden Nachbarländer\, Jean C. Nunn (Den Haag) und Ronald van Roeden (Berlin) über Diplomatie und Sicherheit im heutigen Europa. Anschließend skizzieren Historiker:innen aus Deutschland (Justus Nipperdey\, Saarbrücken)\, den Niederlanden (Beatrice de Graaf und Jorrit Steehouder\, Utrecht) und den USA (Bruce Schulman\, Boston) unterschiedliche Perspektiven auf den Westfälischen Frieden und seine anhaltende Bedeutung für die europäischen Beziehungen.
