DESCRIPTION:Op maandagmiddag 3 juni 2024 organiseert de Stichting Daendels in De Balie te Amsterdam de Daendelslezing 2024. Politiek historicus Joris Oddens plaatst in zijn lezing Het Bataafse loket het ideaal van de toegankelijke overheid in historisch perspectief. \nSinds de Toeslagenaffaire regent het rapporten en commentaren over het probleem van de ontoegankelijke overheid: burgers verdwalen in een woud van uitvoeringsinstanties. Ze worden geacht zelfredzaam te zijn\, maar hun (digitale) geletterdheid is ontoereikend. De overheid heeft haar ‘loketfunctie’ verzaakt en moet haar dienstverlening laagdrempeliger maken. Zij moet zorgen dat iedereen weer mee kan doen. \nIn de Bataafse Republiek\, zoals Nederland na de revolutie van 1795 ging heten\, bestond er geen Dienst Toeslagen\, en ook geen DUO\, CBR\, IND\, SVB\, UWV\, CIZ of Nationale Ombudsman. Het op basis van democratische verkiezingen gevormde eerste Nederlandse parlement fungeerde als het centrale loket voor de meeste nationale overheidstaken. In plaats van de huidige wildgroei aan digitale portalen en communicatiekanalen verliep alle dienstverlening via een uniforme procedure van indiening en behandeling van verzoekschriften. \nIn de 7de Daendelslezing stelt Joris Oddens zich de vraag wat dit betekende voor de toegankelijkheid van de Bataafse overheid. Wie kon er meekomen in de Bataafse Republiek\, wie haakte af of raakte buitengesloten? Kunnen we\, nu vereenvoudiging van de overheidssystemen zo hoog op de politieke agenda staat\, iets leren van het rudimentaire Bataafse model? \nDr. Joris Oddens is hoofd van de onderzoeksgroep Politieke Cultuur en Geschiedenis bij het Huygens Instituut. Hij houdt zich bezig met de Nederlandse politieke geschiedenis van de zeventiende\, achttiende en negentiende eeuw\, met speciale belangstelling voor het revolutietijdvak. SUMMARY:Lecture Maurizio Isabella: The Age of Revolutions in the South
DESCRIPTION:On 16 May\, the Security History Network organises their final lecture of the year. Professor of Modern History Maurizio Isabella (Queen Mary University of London) will give the lecture\, titled ‘The Age of Revolutions in the South’. \nUtrecht University\, Drift 21\, Room 1.05\, Utrecht \nMore information and registration. \nA wave of uprisings\nIsabella aims to answer the question of what revolutions were by looking at the way in which they were conceived\, understood and performed by historical actors in the early 19th century. He does so by discussing a wave of uprisings that broke out in Portugal\, Spain\, Piedmont\, Naples\, and the Ottoman Empire in the 1820s to introduce constitutions. \nIsabella looks at the military origins of these events\, all organised by army officers\, and the ideals and practices related to them. By so doing\, he points to a chronology and geography of the age of revolutions in Europe alternative to existing historical narratives\, based on 1789\, 1830\, and 1848\, and centred around France. \nHe shows instead that the events of 1820s inaugurated a wave of revolutions in Southern Europe independent from French event that lasted up to 1870\, and points to their importance in the history of representative government and popular politics in Europe. \nMaurizio Isabella\nMaurizio Isabella is Professor of Modern History at the Queen Mary University of London. He is the author of Risorgimento in Exile: Italian Émigrés and the Liberal International in the Post-Napoleonic Era (2009). More recently he published his book Southern Europe in the Age of Revolutions (2023)\, which was longlisted for the Runciman Award.

SUMMARY:Lecture Robert Saunders - Reform\, Resistance and Revolution: The Challenge of Democracy in Britain\, 1830-1928
DESCRIPTION:Over the ‘long’ nineteenth century\, Britain experienced a democratic revolution. The monarchy was pushed to the margins of British politics; the House of Lords was stripped of its veto; and the right to vote was extended to all adult men and women. It was a revolution that extended far beyond the state\, reaching into every aspect of social and intellectual life. Democracy was not just a system of government; it was an idea\, a social class and a new vision of society. It challenged the social order\, the gender order\, the class system and the economic system\, and was itself bent into new shapes in the encounter with other traditions. The battle of democracy was fought\, not just in Parliament\, but in churches\, trade unions\, scientific institutes and missionary organisations. Democracy asked new questions of all the great intellectual systems of its day\, from Christianity and evolutionary science to imperialism\, liberalism\, feminism and political economy. \n \nThis talk explores the challenge of democracy in Britain\, from the Great Reform Act of 1832 to the coming of universal suffrage in 1928. It asks how democracy was understood\, how it was practised and how it was shaped by the experience of other countries. It asks what it meant to be an ‘imperial democracy’ or a ‘Christian democracy’; why some parts of the state were democratised but not others; and how democracy engrafted itself on older constitutional ideas. As such\, it offers a new history of democracy in Britain\, exploring a global idea in a specific national context. \nRobert Saunders is Reader in British History at Queen Mary University of London. He specialises in the history of democracy\, and his books include Democracy and the Vote in British Politics\, 1848-1867; Making Thatcher’s Britain (edited with Ben Jackson) and Yes to Europe! The 1975 Referendum and Seventies Britain\, which won the 2019 American Historical Association Prize for British History. He has written for The Times\, The Guardian\, The Economist\, The New Statesman\, Foreign Policy\, The Financial Times and many other outlets\, and has provided comment and analysis for CNN\, BBC Newsnight\, BBC Radio 4\, Sky News and numerous podcasts. DESCRIPTION:Op donderdag 9 april vindt het jaarlijkse congres van de Studievereniging GSV Excalibur en Historisch Tijdschrift Ex Tempore\, beide verbonden aan de opleiding Geschiedenis aan de Radboud Universiteit plaats. Dit jaar staat het actuele thema van sociale bewegingen centraal. Het programma zal uit lezingen bestaan\, waarbij verschillende sociale bewegingen en aspecten daarvan langskomen. \nDeelname aan het gehele dagprogramma is inclusief koffie\, thee\, diner en één consumptie bij de borrel. DESCRIPTION:Organized by: Seminar Global Intellectual History\, https://globalintellectualhistory.org/ \nDate and time: Tuesday 26 March 2024\, 16.00-17.30\nEntrance is free\, no registration required\n \nPlace: Universiteit Utrecht\, Kromme nieuwegracht 80\, 1.06 \nAbstract\nIn this paper Mark Philp will discuss two strands of research that he has followed for more than 20 years – on democracy and on political corruption – as a way of reflecting on Nietszche’s comment and on its implications for the belief that history retains a relevance to our understanding and analysis of the modern world. \nBiography\nMark Philp is a British political philosopher and historian of political thought who specialises in British political thought in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He has published books on Thomas Paine and on responses to the French Revolution in Britain. Philp was a Fellow of Oriel College from 1983 to 2013\, and was head of the then newly created University of Oxford Department of Politics and International Relations from 2000 to 2005. He is currently professor of History and Politics at the University of Warwick working on political corruption and the standards of public life\, as well as democratic thought in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. With Joanna Innes (Oxford)\, he co-directs the research project ‘Re-imagining Democracy 1750-1850’.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Constructing Citizens\, Portraying the People
DESCRIPTION:International transfer and mediatized\, scientized and politicized constructions of ‘the people’ in 20th century Northwestern Europe \nThursday 18 January 2024 – 9.00 AM – 5.30 PM Meeting  and Conference Centre Soeterbeeck \nWho are the people and what do they want\, think and feel? Throughout the twentieth century\, a strong preoccupation existed with determining the preferences – and elucidating the behavior – of citizens as audiences\, consumers or voters. In an effort to answer these questions\, a myriad of actors have constructed notions of ‘the people’: from social scientists to opinion pollsters and market researchers\, from political parties and spin-doctors to media makers\, from agencies in government planning to advertisers. Through practices such as opinion polling\, survey research and vox pops\, discourses on public behavior and opinion were articulated and disseminated\, often influencing how citizens understood themselves and those around them. As certain ideas about society and democracy underpin these constructions\, historians have in recent years become interested in shedding light on the histories of these constructions and their constructors. \nConstructions of ‘the people’ and generalizations of their preferences and opinions are often conceptualized as ‘public opinion’. In determining the processes that underlie these constructions\, various theoretical frameworks such as mediatization and scientization have proved to be thought-provoking points of departure. However\, oftentimes these frameworks invite us to only focus on the one-directional transfer of information from one sphere to another (for example from media or science to society or politics). This workshop aims to complicate such linear narratives and explore the ‘construction of citizens’ as a dynamic and continuous negotiation between a broad variety of constructors. Moreover\, as discussions often are limited to one national context\, we propose to explore the motivations of these constructors – and the discourse on ‘the people’ that they produced – in an internationally comparative and transnational perspective. De veranderende relaties tussen dieren en mensen zijn fascinerend en steeds vaker onderwerp van onderzoek. In het buitenland gebeurt er al veel\, maar ook in Nederland en België zijn er historici die zich met dieren bezighouden\, al vormen zij nog niet echt een eigen vakgebied. In de sociale geschiedenis\, wetenschapsgeschiedenis\, kunstgeschiedenis en geschiedenis van mondiale handel en reizen zijn bijvoorbeeld al verschillende dieren te vinden. \nDit VNVNG-congres wil onderzoekers uit de Lage Landen samenbrengen die zich richten op het vroegmoderne dier\, of\, preciezer: homo sapiens en niet-menselijke dieren in de geschiedenis van de Nederlanden 1500-1850. Hoe zijn historische relaties tussen mensen en ándere dieren te karakteriseren? Zegt diergeschiedenis vooral iets over de menselijke blik op het dier? Of is het ook mogelijk een dier-perspectief in te nemen? In hoeverre hadden dieren agency? Is er sprake van een animal turn in de geschiedenis? Is het tijd voor een aparte discipline? \nDeze en andere vragen worden beantwoord op vrijdag 27 oktober in Amsterdam. Een dozijn sprekers zal evenzoveel diersoorten presenteren. SUMMARY:Jacob van Lenneplezing | ‘De ontdekking van Insulinde: op reis in Nederlands-Indië in de negentiende eeuw’
DESCRIPTION:Het ‘prachtig ryk van Insulinde dat zich daar slingert om den evenaar\, als een gordel van smaragd’. Met die woorden verheerlijkte Multatuli Nederlands-Indië in zijn Max Havelaar (1860). Vanaf de vroege negentiende eeuw trokken allerhande reizigers eropuit om het ‘moederland’ te informeren over het koloniale project. In de Jacob van Lenneplezing van dit jaar onderzoekt Rick Honings de indrukken en ervaringen die in hun reisverhalen zijn terug te vinden. \n\n\n\n\nIn de vroege negentiende eeuw\, na de ondergang van de VOC\, werd Indië voor het eerst een echte kolonie van Nederland. Vanaf dat moment gingen allerlei soorten reizigers op pad om de binnenlanden van Java\, Sumatra en de ‘buitengewesten’ te verkennen: natuuronderzoekers\, predikanten\, zendelingen\, taalgeleerden\, ambtenaren\, militairen en gelukszoekers\, en later ook vrouwen en toeristen. Zij schreven volop reisverhalen om het ‘moederland’ te informeren over het koloniale project. Hoe reisden ze in die periode in Indië? \nIn deze lezing volgen we drie negentiende-eeuwers op hun reis door de kolonie. De natuuronderzoeker Caspar Georg Carl Reinwardt was een van de eersten die na het Engels Tussenbestuur in 1816 de Indonesische archipel verkende. De Oostenrijkse wereldreiziger Ida Pfeiffer begaf zich met gevaar voor eigen leven tussen de ‘koppensnellers’ op Borneo. En wat zeggen de publicaties van deze negentiende-eeuwers over hun manier van denken? \nOver de sprekers\nRick Honings is neerlandicus en Scaliger-hoogleraar aan het Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society. Met Peter van Zonneveld schreef hij een biografie van de dichter Willem Bilderdijk: De gefnuikte arend (2013). Daarnaast publiceerde hij onder meer de monografieën De dichter als idool. Literaire roem in de negentiende eeuw (2016) en Romantici en revolutionairen. Literatuur en schrijverschap in Nederland in de 18de en 19de eeuw (2019\, met Lotte Jensen). \nLotte Jensen is hoogleraar Nederlandse literatuur- en cultuurgeschiedenis aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. Ze is voorzitter van de Werkgroep De Moderne Tijd en publiceert over Nederlandse identiteitsvorming\, literatuur en geschiedenis. Haar meest recente publicatie is: Wij en het water. DESCRIPTION:In een samenwerking tussen de Koninklijke Verzamelingen (waar de meeste van Anna’s brieven worden bewaard) het Huygens Instituut\, NL-Lab en Oxford’s Early Modern Letters Online zijn meer dan 4.000 brieven van en aan Anna van Hannover gedigitaliseerd en online raadpleegbaar gemaakt. Op 29 september zal dat feestelijk worden gevierd met een symposium op Kasteel Duivenvoorde dat geheel aan Anna\, haar brieven en haar muzikaliteit zal zijn gewijd. Kasteel Duivenvoorde\, dat via de familie Van Wassenaer veel banden had met de familie Van Oranje-Nassau\, biedt op die dag de laatste mogelijkheid om de tentoonstelling Franje en Oranje te bezoeken. \nMeer informatie en programma.

This Summer School prepares students to apply a multifaceted approach in writing political history. Students will delve into key historiographical debates and theories on politics from below\, democracy and political representation from a multidisciplinary perspective (history\, philosophy\, political science). The Summer School offers a discussion of recent research on citizen letters\, petitions\, protests and the mass media (printed press\, radio\, TV). In a workshop setting\, students are invited to work with various sources and methods to write political history from below. \nWriting Political History from Below \nAssessing the state-of-the-art in 2013\, Willibald Steinmetz and Heinz-Gerhard Haupt concluded that ‘governments\, monarchs\, parties\, or parliaments … still get the bulk of attention in many new political histories’. Although this still holds true today\, studying politics from below or at the intersection of the ‘formal political world of representation and the informal political world of everyday life’ (Lawrence 2009) has been on the up. Testimony to this is research by political historians on petitioning\, correspondence\, electoral culture\, public opinion formation\, popular culture\, the rise of the citizen-consumer\, and the mass media\, among other topics. In political theory and philosophy\, too\, the notion of ‘the people’ and bottom-up perspectives on political representation and democracy are en vogue. \nYet\, those interested in such approaches to political history are confronted with a range of challenges. First of all\, the lack of a shared vocabulary among political historians. Doing political history from below comes with a variety of concepts\, such as ‘popular politics’\, ‘the politics of everyday life’\, ‘subaltern politics’\, ‘ordinary politics’\, and ‘public politics’. Definitions often remain vague. Second\, a (supposed) lack of sources and representativeness: archives are highly geared towards offering access to high politics (institutional and personal archives) and the sources we do have are not equally distributed in terms of class\, gender\, ethnicity etc. Third\, the interaction between the formal and informal political world is often staged and mediated\, with the mass media playing a key role. \nThese challenges form the starting point for our summer school. First of all\, you will familiarize yourself with the key historiographical debates and theories on politics from below\, democracy and political representation from a multidisciplinary perspective (history\, philosophy\, political science). Second\, you will explore and discuss recent research on citizen letters\, petitions\, protests and the mass media (printed press\, radio\, TV) with a focus on Western Europe. Third\, you will get to work with various sources and methods to write political history from below and get the opportunity to formulate or finetune your own research ideas in a collaborative setting. You can draw inspiration from ongoing research projects conducted by the tutors of this summer school in which they approach political history from below. \nThe Summer School consists of several keynote lectures\, workshops and thematic seminars on topics such as resistance\, mass media sources\, and digital humanities. DESCRIPTION:Op vrijdag 30 juni organiseren Erfgoedcentrum & Musea Zutphen samen met de Radboud Universiteit weer het Middeleeuwen Symposium. Dit jaar is het thema ‘De Hanze: Handel\, Communicatie & Conflict’. \nDe Hanze spreekt tot de verbeelding door haar combinatie van internationale samenwerking en daadkracht\, zeker gezien de actuele uitdagingen op het wereldtoneel. Het leven van de koopman ging echter niet altijd voor de wind en steden raakten regelmatig betrokken bij conflict. Dus hoe werkte de Hanze precies? \nJonge onderzoekers en experts uit binnen- en buitenland bieden de nieuwste inzichten in dit netwerk van steden en kooplieden. Onderwerpen variëren van standaardmaten in de bierhandel tot het verrassend belang van wegvervoer. Dr. Carsten Jahnke verzorgt een key-note over het ontstaan van de Hanze. Ook is er aandacht voor Nederlandse handelsnederzettingen aan de Sontkusten. \nNaast het symposium organiseren we op 29 juni een facultatieve extra dag: de Hanze-collegetour.
