DESCRIPTION:The Conference “Labour Inspection in a Global Context: Balancing the Interests of Employers and Employees” will focus on the history\, presence and future of these two groups\, and will be held on 10 and 11 October 2024 at the International Institute for Social History. \n\n\n\n\nLabour inspectorates ensure that employers comply with labour laws and regulations that protect the rights and safety of workers. However\, they also face challenges and opposition from employers and employees because of the divergent interests between these two groups. For example\, employers may see labour inspections as a source of excessive regulation that interfere with their economic interests. Unions and labour movements\, in turn\, may view labour inspections as inadequate and ineffective in enforcing labour standards and ensuring the protection of workers’ rights in terms of working hours and safety. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:Symposium 'Goetgevonden ende verstaen'. De resoluties van de Staten-Generaal digitaal ontsloten
DESCRIPTION:Sinds 2019 (maar eigenlijk al veel langer) werken we binnen het Humanities Cluster van de KNAW met een team van historici\, computerwetenschappers\, ontwikkelaars en data-experts aan een bijzonder project. Het doel dat we voor ogen hadden was een gelaagde digitale ontsluiting van de miljoen besluiten die de Staten-Generaal van de Republiek der Verenigde Nederlanden hebben genomen tussen de late 16e en de late 18e eeuw. We wisten waar we wilden uitkomen\, maar we wisten ook dat er enorme technische uitdagingen waren waarvoor creatieve oplossingen nodig zouden zijn.\n\n \n\nInmiddels komt het einde van onze queeste in zicht. Er wordt nog hard gewerkt\, maar we kijken ernaar uit om de resultaten te kunnen delen. Daarom willen we je graag uitnodigen voor het wetenschappelijke symposium Goetgevonden ende verstaen. De resoluties van de Staten-Generaal digitaal ontsloten\, dat zal plaatsvinden in de Nettlauzaal van het IISG in Amsterdam op woensdag 9 oktober van 12-17 uur.\n\n \n\nTijdens deze bijeenkomst staat de vraag centraal hoe wetenschappelijke gebruikers de webapplicatie die we zullen opleveren optimaal kunnen benutten. Ook gaan we in op andere manieren om gebruik te maken van onze data en verrijkingen. Een programma volgt in september. SUMMARY:Veertiende Jacob van Lennep-lezing: De invloed van Betje Wolff en Aagje Deken op romanschrijvers in de 19e eeuw
DESCRIPTION:In deze veertiende Jacob van Lennep-lezing zal Marita Mathijsen ingaan op de doorbraak die de romans van Betje Wolff en Aagje Deken veroorzaakten. Zij onderzoekt daarbij op welke wijze deze romans ook negentiende-eeuwse schrijvers\, zoals Jacob van Lennep\, beïnvloedden. \n\n\n\n\nRomans werden in de achttiende eeuw gezien als een genre dat minder betekende dan poëzie\, en dat alleen lezers uit de laagste klasse kon trekken. Wolff en Deken wisten met hun brievenromans een ontwikkeld publiek te bereiken. Dat werkte door in de negentiende eeuw. Hoewel de romans van het duo speelden in de eigen tijd en een kenschets gaven van het burgerlijk leven in de achttiende eeuw\, bouwden ook de historische romans van de negentiende-eeuwers verder op het fundament dat Wolff en Deken aangelegd hadden. Met name in de romans van Jacob van Lennep ziet men types optreden zoals die ook bij Wolff en Deken voorkomen. Net als Wolff en Deken karakteriseert hij zijn personages in hun taalgebruik en net als zij heeft hij veel aandacht voor de locaties. Ook andere schrijvers betraden de weg die Wolff en Deken voor de romankunst geplaveid hadden.   \nMeer informatie en aanmelding.

DESCRIPTION:Op donderdag 19 september bespreekt Erik de Lange zijn pas verschenen boek Menacing Tides: Security\, Piracy and Empire in the Nineteenth Century Mediterranean. De Lange trapt hiermee de nieuwe lezingenreeks van het Security History Network af. \nNieuwe ideeën van veiligheid\nToen Europese staten in de negentiende eeuw hun militaire conflicten beëindigden\, richtten ze hun aandacht op de piratennesten in Algiers\, Tunis en Tripoli. Marinecommandanten\, diplomaten\, koopliedenlobby’s en activisten werkten voor het eerst samen tegen deze gedeelde dreiging en installeerden een nieuwe orde van veiligheid op zee. \nHoe heeft deze samenwerking de Middellandse Zee opnieuw vormgegeven en waarom heeft het een nieuwe vorm van collaboratief imperialisme ontketend? De boeklancering wordt begeleid door een rondetafelgesprek met Annelien de Dijn\, Cedric Ryngaert (beiden Universiteit Utrecht) en Michael Talbot (University of Greenwich). With this\, De Lange kicks off the Security History Network’s new lecture series. \nNew ideas of security\nAs European states ended their military conflicts in the nineteenth century\, they turned their attention to the pirate nests in Algiers\, Tunis\, and Tripoli. Naval commanders\, diplomats\, merchant lobbies\, and activists cooperated for the first time against this shared threat and installed a new order of security at sea. \nHow did this cooperation remade the Mediterranean and why did it unleash a new form of collaborative imperialism? DESCRIPTION:From 18 to 20 September 2024\, the Department of History of the University of Antwerp will host an international conference on the history of resistance during the Second World War. \nAlmost eighty years after the end of the Second World War and after the resistance to the fascist and nazi occupiers emerged from its shadows\, this conference aims to unite the wealth of perspectives and insights generated by resistance historiography during these past decades. SUMMARY:Conference Voices of resistance in and against Dutch empire
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the long history of Dutch empire starting in the early seventeenth century and extending into the postcolonial present\, various people both in imperial dependencies across the globe and the metropole have resisted the logics and realities of oppression and exploitation. While colonisers’ perspectives have received plentiful attention\, this conference puts the often marginalized voices of resistance in and against Dutch empire front and centre. Drawing on recent trends in the intellectual history of anticolonialism\, the conference will chart and discuss the intellectual interventions of actors who agitated against the Dutch empire and its legacies\, from the 1600s to the 2020s. \nKeynote speaker is Marjoleine Kars (MIT). \nThe conference takes place on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 September 2024\, at Utrecht University.\nMore information. \n

DESCRIPTION:Op maandagmiddag 3 juni 2024 organiseert de Stichting Daendels in De Balie te Amsterdam de Daendelslezing 2024. Politiek historicus Joris Oddens plaatst in zijn lezing Het Bataafse loket het ideaal van de toegankelijke overheid in historisch perspectief. \nSinds de Toeslagenaffaire regent het rapporten en commentaren over het probleem van de ontoegankelijke overheid: burgers verdwalen in een woud van uitvoeringsinstanties. Ze worden geacht zelfredzaam te zijn\, maar hun (digitale) geletterdheid is ontoereikend. De overheid heeft haar ‘loketfunctie’ verzaakt en moet haar dienstverlening laagdrempeliger maken. Zij moet zorgen dat iedereen weer mee kan doen. \nIn de Bataafse Republiek\, zoals Nederland na de revolutie van 1795 ging heten\, bestond er geen Dienst Toeslagen\, en ook geen DUO\, CBR\, IND\, SVB\, UWV\, CIZ of Nationale Ombudsman. Het op basis van democratische verkiezingen gevormde eerste Nederlandse parlement fungeerde als het centrale loket voor de meeste nationale overheidstaken. In plaats van de huidige wildgroei aan digitale portalen en communicatiekanalen verliep alle dienstverlening via een uniforme procedure van indiening en behandeling van verzoekschriften. \nIn de 7de Daendelslezing stelt Joris Oddens zich de vraag wat dit betekende voor de toegankelijkheid van de Bataafse overheid. Wie kon er meekomen in de Bataafse Republiek\, wie haakte af of raakte buitengesloten? Kunnen we\, nu vereenvoudiging van de overheidssystemen zo hoog op de politieke agenda staat\, iets leren van het rudimentaire Bataafse model? \nDr. Joris Oddens is hoofd van de onderzoeksgroep Politieke Cultuur en Geschiedenis bij het Huygens Instituut. Hij houdt zich bezig met de Nederlandse politieke geschiedenis van de zeventiende\, achttiende en negentiende eeuw\, met speciale belangstelling voor het revolutietijdvak. DESCRIPTION:On 16 May\, the Security History Network organises their final lecture of the year. Professor of Modern History Maurizio Isabella (Queen Mary University of London) will give the lecture\, titled ‘The Age of Revolutions in the South’. \nUtrecht University\, Drift 21\, Room 1.05\, Utrecht \nMore information and registration. \nA wave of uprisings\nIsabella aims to answer the question of what revolutions were by looking at the way in which they were conceived\, understood and performed by historical actors in the early 19th century. He does so by discussing a wave of uprisings that broke out in Portugal\, Spain\, Piedmont\, Naples\, and the Ottoman Empire in the 1820s to introduce constitutions. \nIsabella looks at the military origins of these events\, all organised by army officers\, and the ideals and practices related to them. By so doing\, he points to a chronology and geography of the age of revolutions in Europe alternative to existing historical narratives\, based on 1789\, 1830\, and 1848\, and centred around France. \nHe shows instead that the events of 1820s inaugurated a wave of revolutions in Southern Europe independent from French event that lasted up to 1870\, and points to their importance in the history of representative government and popular politics in Europe. \nMaurizio Isabella\nMaurizio Isabella is Professor of Modern History at the Queen Mary University of London. He is the author of Risorgimento in Exile: Italian Émigrés and the Liberal International in the Post-Napoleonic Era (2009). More recently he published his book Southern Europe in the Age of Revolutions (2023)\, which was longlisted for the Runciman Award.

SUMMARY:Lecture Robert Saunders - Reform\, Resistance and Revolution: The Challenge of Democracy in Britain\, 1830-1928
DESCRIPTION:Over the ‘long’ nineteenth century\, Britain experienced a democratic revolution. The monarchy was pushed to the margins of British politics; the House of Lords was stripped of its veto; and the right to vote was extended to all adult men and women. It was a revolution that extended far beyond the state\, reaching into every aspect of social and intellectual life. Democracy was not just a system of government; it was an idea\, a social class and a new vision of society. It challenged the social order\, the gender order\, the class system and the economic system\, and was itself bent into new shapes in the encounter with other traditions. The battle of democracy was fought\, not just in Parliament\, but in churches\, trade unions\, scientific institutes and missionary organisations. Democracy asked new questions of all the great intellectual systems of its day\, from Christianity and evolutionary science to imperialism\, liberalism\, feminism and political economy. \n \nThis talk explores the challenge of democracy in Britain\, from the Great Reform Act of 1832 to the coming of universal suffrage in 1928. It asks how democracy was understood\, how it was practised and how it was shaped by the experience of other countries. It asks what it meant to be an ‘imperial democracy’ or a ‘Christian democracy’; why some parts of the state were democratised but not others; and how democracy engrafted itself on older constitutional ideas. As such\, it offers a new history of democracy in Britain\, exploring a global idea in a specific national context. \nRobert Saunders is Reader in British History at Queen Mary University of London. He specialises in the history of democracy\, and his books include Democracy and the Vote in British Politics\, 1848-1867; Making Thatcher’s Britain (edited with Ben Jackson) and Yes to Europe! The 1975 Referendum and Seventies Britain\, which won the 2019 American Historical Association Prize for British History. He has written for The Times\, The Guardian\, The Economist\, The New Statesman\, Foreign Policy\, The Financial Times and many other outlets\, and has provided comment and analysis for CNN\, BBC Newsnight\, BBC Radio 4\, Sky News and numerous podcasts. He has published books on Thomas Paine and on responses to the French Revolution in Britain. Philp was a Fellow of Oriel College from 1983 to 2013\, and was head of the then newly created University of Oxford Department of Politics and International Relations from 2000 to 2005. He is currently professor of History and Politics at the University of Warwick working on political corruption and the standards of public life\, as well as democratic thought in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. With Joanna Innes (Oxford)\, he co-directs the research project ‘Re-imagining Democracy 1750-1850’.

DESCRIPTION:International transfer and mediatized\, scientized and politicized constructions of ‘the people’ in 20th century Northwestern Europe \nThursday 18 January 2024 – 9.00 AM – 5.30 PM Meeting  and Conference Centre Soeterbeeck \nWho are the people and what do they want\, think and feel? Throughout the twentieth century\, a strong preoccupation existed with determining the preferences – and elucidating the behavior – of citizens as audiences\, consumers or voters. In an effort to answer these questions\, a myriad of actors have constructed notions of ‘the people’: from social scientists to opinion pollsters and market researchers\, from political parties and spin-doctors to media makers\, from agencies in government planning to advertisers. Through practices such as opinion polling\, survey research and vox pops\, discourses on public behavior and opinion were articulated and disseminated\, often influencing how citizens understood themselves and those around them. As certain ideas about society and democracy underpin these constructions\, historians have in recent years become interested in shedding light on the histories of these constructions and their constructors. \nConstructions of ‘the people’ and generalizations of their preferences and opinions are often conceptualized as ‘public opinion’. In determining the processes that underlie these constructions\, various theoretical frameworks such as mediatization and scientization have proved to be thought-provoking points of departure. However\, oftentimes these frameworks invite us to only focus on the one-directional transfer of information from one sphere to another (for example from media or science to society or politics). This workshop aims to complicate such linear narratives and explore the ‘construction of citizens’ as a dynamic and continuous negotiation between a broad variety of constructors. Moreover\, as discussions often are limited to one national context\, we propose to explore the motivations of these constructors – and the discourse on ‘the people’ that they produced – in an internationally comparative and transnational perspective. DESCRIPTION:On 16 and 17 November 2023\, Posthumus alumni Dennis De Vriese (Vrije Universiteit Brussel)\, Nicholas Brunmayr (Université Libre de Bruxelles) and Robin Rose Southard (VUB) organise an international conference\, entitled ‘Food\, Rules and the City: Food Market Regulations and Their Social and Political Dynamics (15th-20th C.)’. \nSeeking to adopt such a long-term perspective and to explore more fully than before the social and political dynamics underlying these regulations\, this conference will bring together recent research into motivations\, reasoning and strategies applied by economic actors in the making of food market regulations in European cities from the 15th to the 20th century. DESCRIPTION:Jaarcongres Vlaams-Nederlandse Vereniging voor Nieuwe Geschiedenis \nLocatie: UvA – Bushuis\, Kloveniersburgwal 48\, zaal F0.01\nTijd: 10:00-17:00 met aansluitend borrel\nKosten: €25\,– inclusief lunch en borrel (€15\,– voor studenten) \nDierMens Studies worden steeds populairder aan universiteiten\, en ook voor het dier in de geschiedenis (animal history) komt steeds meer aandacht. De veranderende relaties tussen dieren en mensen zijn fascinerend en steeds vaker onderwerp van onderzoek. In het buitenland gebeurt er al veel\, maar ook in Nederland en België zijn er historici die zich met dieren bezighouden\, al vormen zij nog niet echt een eigen vakgebied. In de sociale geschiedenis\, wetenschapsgeschiedenis\, kunstgeschiedenis en geschiedenis van mondiale handel en reizen zijn bijvoorbeeld al verschillende dieren te vinden. \nDit VNVNG-congres wil onderzoekers uit de Lage Landen samenbrengen die zich richten op het vroegmoderne dier\, of\, preciezer: homo sapiens en niet-menselijke dieren in de geschiedenis van de Nederlanden 1500-1850. Hoe zijn historische relaties tussen mensen en ándere dieren te karakteriseren? Zegt diergeschiedenis vooral iets over de menselijke blik op het dier? Of is het ook mogelijk een dier-perspectief in te nemen? In hoeverre hadden dieren agency? Is er sprake van een animal turn in de geschiedenis? Is het tijd voor een aparte discipline? \nDeze en andere vragen worden beantwoord op vrijdag 27 oktober in Amsterdam. Een dozijn sprekers zal evenzoveel diersoorten presenteren. Intussen vonden moderne hervormingen plaats die het land blijvend veranderden. \n\n\nDe volgende sprekers hebben bevestigd: \n\n\nDr. Joost Rosendaal licht een tip van de sluier op van zijn volgende boek\, dat gaat over de pogingen van stadhouder Willem V om vanuit diens ballingsoord Engeland een anti-Franse contrarevolutie in Nederland te ontketenen. \n\n\nDirk Alkemade MA vertelt over zijn promotieonderwerp: de radicale patriot Pieter Vreede en diens bijdrage aan de eerste democratische grondwet van 1798. \n\n\nProf. dr. Lotte Jensen legt uit wat de nalatenschap van Napoleon in Nederland is geweest en hoe zijn heerschappij doorwerkt in de huidige tijd. \n\n\nDr. Olaf van Nimwegen\, militair historicus en schrijver van De Nederlandse Burgeroorlog (1748-1815)\, laat zien dat de strijd tussen de Patriotten aan de ene kant\, en het leger van stadhouder Willem V en zijn Pruisische bondgenoot aan de andere kant niet een militair onbeduidend conflict was\, zoals vaak wordt aangenomen. Door de uittocht van gezichtsbepalende vertegenwoordigers en de populariteit van nieuwe partijen ligt de verkiezingsuitslag open. Is dit dan de geboorte van een nieuwe bestuurscultuur? \nOp het eerste gezicht belichamen partijen als BBB en NSC een nieuw type vertegenwoordiging. Pieter Omtzigt spreekt zich in zijn manifest uit voor beter bestuur en wil vooral de uitvoerende kant van politiek verbeteren. Ook heeft hij\, net als Caroline van der Plas\, een sterke regionale basis. Daarnaast richten beiden zich expliciet op de belangen van een specifieke groep\, namelijk burgers die klemzitten in het huidige bestuurlijke systeem. Daarmee zijn zij anders dan bijvoorbeeld Partij voor de Dieren en PVV\, die begonnen als single issuepartijen.
