SUMMARY:Conference: Settler Colonial Paradigms
DESCRIPTION:The three-day international conference “Settler Colonial Paradigms” explores the extent to which settler colonialism can be understood as a long-term structure that has evolved since antiquity and continues to shape contemporary societies and the global order. It aims to contribute to current debates within Settler Colonial Studies by examining and critically reassessing theories about the structural forces\, mechanisms\, and consequences of settler colonialism. \nDay 1 of the conference focuses on the modern and contemporary period\, discussing the emergence and development of settler colonial structures across different geographical and cultural contexts. On the second day\, the conference turns to the question of whether settler colonialism should be understood as an exclusively modern phenomenon\, analysing forms of colonisation in the pre-modern and early modern world. The conference concludes on the third day with an excursion to the Dutch Colonies of Benevolence\, where it will explore settler colonialism and heritage. \nThis conference is organised in the context of the Settler Colonial Paradigms (SECOPS) research programme of KNIR. More information on the conference and the full program\, as well as a registration form to attend one or more sessions\, can be found here. \n21-23 May 2026 | Het Oude Raadhuis\, Oude Boteringestraat 19\, 9712 GC Groningen

SUMMARY:Symposium: 'Facing Crisis: Interdisciplinary Symposium in the Humanities'
DESCRIPTION:Continuing a tradition that started only last year\, the students of Radboud University’s Research Master’s in Historical\, Literary and Cultural Studies will be organising another symposium this year. The symposium\, titled ‘Facing Crisis: Interdisciplinary Symposium in the Humanities’\, will take place on 16 April 2026 in the Maria Montessori building in room 00.035 at Radboud University from 10 am to 1 pm\, followed by drinks at The Yard. \nWe were wondering whether it would be possible to have this event listed on your website. You can find a description of the symposium below\, followed by a general overview of the programme. Please let us know if you need any other information. \nSymposium description:\nCrisis comes in many forms across different periods and cultures and seems more relevant than ever. Our recent experiences with COVID\, constant flashpoints of war and genocide\, economic hardship\, among many other crises\, highlight this. Undeniably\, crises have profound societal and cultural impacts with highly diverse consequences. Naomi Klein writes in her book The Shock Doctrine (2014)\, for example\, that “[c]rises are\, in a way\, democracy-free zones— gaps in politics as usual when the need for consent and consensus do not seem to apply” (140). Approaching “crisis” through (art) historical\, literary\, and culture studies lenses encourages us to think about what we conceptualize as “‘crisis\,” how we deal with it\, and how it impacts us. \nThis all raises several questions. How can an interdisciplinary approach to the humanities offer new perspectives on the sources and impacts of crisis? Does studying crisis require new methods\, new collaborations\, a new sense of ethics? How does our experience of contemporary crises shape our understanding of historical crises\, and vice versa? How does such a seemingly broad impactful concept manifest itself\, and how can reflecting on this help us as a society live through what we perceive as crises today? \nApproaching “crisis” through the shared fields of history\, literature\, and art/visual studies encourages us to think about what we conceptualize as “‘crisis\,” how we deal with it\, and how it impacts us. \nResearchers Jacob Engelberg (University of Amsterdam)\, Lotte Jensen (Radboud University)\, and Sandra Ponzanesi (Utrecht University) will each shine their light on the topic of crisis before entering a roundtable discussion with several students from Radboud University’s Research Master’s in Historical\, Literary and Cultural Studies to discuss it in further detail and draw connections between their research fields. \nProgramme: \n\n10.00-10.05: Opening words\n10.05-10.30: First Speaker\n10.30-10.45: Q+A\n10.45-11.10: Second Speaker\n11.10-11.25: Q+A\n11.25-11.45: Coffee Break\n11.45-12.10: Third Speaker\n12.10-12.25: Q+A\n12.25-12.50: Roundtable\n12.50-13.00: Closing\nDrinks at The Yard\n\nBelow\, you will find a link to the official website and the poster. Sign-up is appreciated\, but not mandatory\, and will soon be made available via the website. If you have any questions\, do not hesitate to reach out. \nFacing Crisis: Interdisciplinary Symposium in the Humanities | Radboud University

SUMMARY:Symposium: It lân fan dream en winsken?
SUMMARY:Seminar: Religion\, Politics and Power. Death and Dying in the Premodern World
DESCRIPTION:On 9 April\, the Yearly Seminar of the Utrecht University Centre for Medieval Studies (UUCMS) marks the launch of the new thematic focus ‘Religion\, Politics and Power’. With ‘Death and Dying in the Premodern World’ as its inaugural topic\, the seminar invites attendees to reflect on one of the most pervasive yet challenging dimensions of premodern life. As in previous years\, the seminar will bring together scholars and students for an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas. \n\nDeath and dying\nIn premodern societies\, death was never a purely private or biological event. It was shaped\, mediated\, and made meaningful through religious beliefs\, ritual practices\, law\, political authority\, and social hierarchy.  \nFrom responses to illness\, ars moriendi (‘the art of dying’) treatises\, and funerary sermons to burial practices and commemorative rituals\, judicial executions\, and communications with the afterlife: death functioned as a site where power was negotiated. At the same time\, dying raised questions about salvation. This links individual experiences to larger structures of belief and governance.  \nReligion\, politics and power\nRecent scholarship has emphasised the need to move beyond uniform views of premodern attitudes to death. Taking into account interdisciplinary insights from modern death and grief studies\, scholars have shown how the meaning of dying is always context-dependent\, socially stratified\, and entangled with (institutional) authority.  \nIn the premodern period\, religious prescriptions coexisted with local practices\, normative discourses with lived experience\, and political decisions with personal anxiety and hope. Death thus offers us a lens through which to examine the intersections of religion\, politics\, and power in the premodern world.  \nMultidisciplinary conversation\nThe aim of this Yearly Seminar is to open up a multidisciplinary conversation on how death and dying were framed\, regulated\, represented and experienced in the premodern world. Particular attention will be paid to the ways in which religious beliefs influenced dying\, how medicine sought to control death\, and how texts\, images\, rituals\, and material culture mediated encounters with death. \nBy bringing together different sources\, methodologies and disciplines\, the seminar aims to rethink death as an important social and cultural process embedded in structures of power. \nDate and time: 9 April 2026 – 10.45-16.00\nLocation: Janskerkhof 2-3\, room 0.19\nRegistration: Register by sending an email to ucms@uu.nl before 30 March. \nMore information: Read more about the Utrecht University Centre for Medieval Studies

SUMMARY:Jaarcongres De Moderne Tijd: Feest! Jubilea en herdenkingen in de moderne tijd\, 1780-1940
DESCRIPTION:De werkgroep De Moderne Tijd bestaat in 2026 vijftig jaar. \nZulke feesten werkten even verbindend als polariserend. \nProgramma Feest! Jubilea en herdenkingen 2026

SUMMARY:Lecture: The Spanish Famine: victory and death in Franco's postwar Spain
DESCRIPTION:This lecture situates the Spanish famine of the 1940s within the broader history of contemporary European famines\, arguing that it should be understood not as an anomaly but as part of a continental landscape shaped by war\, authoritarianism\, and postwar reconstruction. While sharing features with other European experiences of scarcity\, the Spanish case was distinguished by the victorious imposition of a new political order that transformed hunger into a tool of repression. \nTime and location: March\, 17\,  5:15 PM – 7:00 PM\, Drift 13\, room 0.03 \nThis lecture is jointly organised with the project Politics of Environmental Action and supported by Pathways to Sustainability and initiated by Roberta Biasillo. \nRegistration is open until 16 March 2026\, 10:00 a.m.\, with Roel Frakking: r.frakking@uu.nl

SUMMARY:Webinarserie Geopolitiek - Deel 1: nieuwe ontwikkelingen in historisch perspectief

SUMMARY:Online book launch and discussion: Depoliticisation before Neoliberalism: Contesting the Boundaries of the Political in Modern Europe
DESCRIPTION:We kindly invite you to the online book launch of the volume Depoliticisation before Neoliberalism: Contesting the Boundaries of the Political in Modern Europe. Edited by Adriejan van Veen (Radboud University Nijmegen) and Theo Jung (Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg) and part of Palgrave’s Studies in Political History\, the book analyses processes of depoliticisation in modern Europe from the emergence of a distinct ‘political’ sphere in the late eighteenth century until the present day. Developing a novel conceptual framework and drawing on case studies from across the continent\, the authors argue that depoliticisation is much more than a simple negation of politics. Rather than an anonymous and amorphous process\, depoliticisation often presents an express\, actor-driven effort\, with modes and forms no less varied than the more familiar manifestations of politicisation. \nConsequently\, the chapters encompass a whole range of depoliticising discursive strategies\, performative practices\, and institutional rearrangements\, playing out across different regime types\, from revolutionary orders and representative governments with limited franchises to mass democracies and totalitarian dictatorships. Illustrating how historical actors understood ‘the political’ and in which ways they intervened to renegotiate its boundaries\, this book seeks to enhance our understanding of modern politics and pose questions that still resonate today. At a time when the boundaries of the political are once more heavily contested\, this book offers thought-provoking insights that will appeal to scholars of history\, political science\, and sociology\, as well as to activists and political practitioners. \nAfter a short introduction to the volume by the editors\, prof. Willibald Steinmetz (Universität Bielefeld)\, editor of Writing Political History Today (2013)\, will reflect on its approach and contribution to the study of political in modern history. Ruben Ros (Utrecht University) will then discuss his chapter as well as his latest research\, studying depoliticisation using innovative digital humanities methods. The session will conclude with a Q&A and plenary discussion. \nPlease register using this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc6OKqRmMmSmGUqiZoQx019OOIU-xAJNgDo8ba9YGbtJ7l-qw/viewform.\nQueries can be addressed to Adriejan van Veen adriejan.vanveen@ru.nl

SUMMARY:19 februari 2026: Utrecht Lecture in Political History by Moritz Mihatsch
DESCRIPTION:Shifting sovereignties — Manifestations of sovereignty from a global historical perspective \nSovereignty is once again at the forefront of international debate\, especially thanks to the re-election of Donald Trump. However\, as a concept it is badly understood and often invoked as an empty signifier. Traditional conceptions of sovereignty are both ahistorical and impractical. Starting with historical examples from around the globe\, the talk proposes an approach to sovereignty which starts from these practical manifestations and incorporates change. \nLocatie en tijd:  Janskerkhof 15A\, room 1.01\, 17:15 uur.\nPlease register your attendance with Frederik Frank Sterkenburgh (f.f.sterkenburgh@uu.nl)\, by 16 February 2026. \n

SUMMARY:Global Political Thought Seminar and Amsterdam Medieval Seminar: Free Speech in Post-Revolutionary Vietnam
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 17 February 2026\, 16:00 -18:00\, Bushuis Room  BH E1.02 \nKevin Pham (UvA) (https://www.uva.nl/en/profile/p/h/k.d.pham/k.d.pham.html) \nIn 1954\, the government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) defeated the French military at Dien Bien Phu\, thereby ending French colonialism in Vietnam (1858-1954). But soon after achieving national liberation\, the same government became a new source of oppression in the newly independent state\, or so argued a group of about fifty intellectuals proclaiming loyalty to the DRV. This talk presents the ideas of these intellectuals\, participants in what has become known as the Nhan Van – Giai Phammovement (1956-1960). They criticized their government for becoming dogmatic\, authoritarian\, and harming the interests of the people they claimed to serve. Interestingly\, they argued that the key to long lasting freedom in Vietnam is freedom of speech. But rather than defend freedom of speech in terms of individual entitlement as we tend to do in the West\, they defend it as a collective—rather than individual—right\, arguing that it can help the government redress mistakes\, identify what is good and bad for the people\, and create a socialism that celebrates human diversity. Their theories of free speech draw on Confucian traditions of remonstrance and Marxism\, thus offering a different\, more global perspective on free speech.

SUMMARY:Online book launch webinar of 'The Figure of the Politician in Modern and Contemporary Europe'
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to join the online book launch webinar celebrating the publication of The Figure of the Politician in Modern and Contemporary Europe (Berghahn Books). \nAbout the Book\nAlthough political history has long been central to historical research\, surprisingly little attention has been paid to its key concept\, the politician. The authors of this book investigate how politicians have described themselves and how others have perceived them\, especially in parliamentary contexts. The book highlights the importance of understanding how politicians have been imagined and how they navigate complex roles. The Figure of the Politician in Modern and Contemporary Europe also invites us to rethink our assumptions about politicians. It shows that politicians are not just self-serving actors\, but figures navigating competing demands\, ideals and expectations. By studying how they have been described and how they describe themselves\, we gain deeper insight into the nature and change of representative democracy. \nDate: Friday\, 6 February 2026\nTime: \n\n12:00–13:30 GMT\n13:00–14:30 CET\n14:00–15:30 EET\n\nTo join\, please register by completing this form: https://forms.gle/r2upQdH3w2v5QACo9 \nProgramme\n13:00–13:10 Welcome and brief introduction to the book – Pasi Ihalainen – University of Jyväskylä\n13:10–13:30 Elevator pitches on key findings of the chapters\n13:30–13:40 Quick questions from the audience\n13:40–13:50 A historian’s comment on the book – Christina Morina – PEVZ\, Bielefeld University\n13:50–14:00 A political theorist’s comment on the book – Alan Finlayson – University of East Anglia\n14:00–14:30 General discussion

SUMMARY:Gesprek | Verlies.
The event will be held in English\, see English description on spui25.

SUMMARY:Lecture Johan van Merriënboer: ‘Chancellor Kohl cannot be allowed to drive NATO.’
DESCRIPTION:The Dutch Centre for Parliamentary History (CPG)\, in collaboration with the Cold War Research Network\, warmly invites you to a lecture by dr. Johan van Merriënboer on Wednesday 3 December 2025 at Radboud University Nijmegen. (R)MA-students\, PhD-students and early career scholars are particularly welcome to attend. Please send an e-mail to Laurien Crump (Laurien.Crump@ru.nl) if you also wish to join the Cold War Research Network (Cold War Research Network | Universiteit Utrecht). \nThis lecture takes its title from a striking remark by U.S. President George H.W. Bush to Dutch Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers in the Oval Office on 9 May 1989: \n‘Chancellor Kohl cannot be allowed to drive NATO.’ \nAt that moment\, NATO was deeply divided over the modernization of short-range nuclear weapons. Meanwhile\, Western leaders were reconsidering their stance toward Mikhail Gorbachev’s reform agenda and his growing popularity in West Germany under Chancellor Helmut Kohl. Bush’s words reflect the tensions within the alliance that framed the high-stakes diplomacy of the period. \nIn this lecture\, dr. Van Merriënboer will show how Lubbers positioned the Netherlands as a mediator between the United States and West Germany. Drawing on archival research and Lubbers’s memoirs\, he will explore how Dutch diplomacy helped shape a new American strategy toward Europe and the Soviet Union. In doing so\, the Netherlands contributed to the favourable political climate\, the so-called ‘Wind of Change’ that paved the way for the peaceful end of the Cold War. \nThe lecture will address questions such as: \n\nHow did Lubbers balance relations between Washington and BonnI\nIn what ways did Dutch diplomacy influence U.S. strategy?\nHow did these dynamics contribute to Europe’s path toward peaceful change?\n\nPractical details:\n🗓 Date: Wednesday\, 3 December 2025\n🕓 Time: 16:00-17:30\n📍 Location: Erasmus building\, room E9.14 (9th floor)\, Erasmusplein 1\, 6525 HT Nijmegen \nDon’t miss this chance to revisit a dramatic turning point in world history\, and to reflect on the Netherlands’ often-overlooked role in Cold War diplomacy! \nRead the full event announcement.

SUMMARY:OPG Workshop Data Management and Analysis for Historical Research in Nodegoat
DESCRIPTION:How do you organize\, structure\, and preserve your sources and data? Data management has become an essential part of doing research in the humanities\, whether you work with archival materials\, oral histories\, or born-digital sources. This workshop introduces participants to key principles of data management: how to store\, connect\, and analyze data in ways that make your research both sustainable and transparent. \nAs a practical case\, we will work with Nodegoat\, a web-based research environment designed specifically for the humanities and widely used by an international research community. Nodegoat allows scholars to build customized datasets and offers relational\, spatial\, and chronological modes of analysis. \nThe workshop\, given by Nodegoat developers Pim van Bree and Geert Kessels\, combines broader discussions on data management in the humanities with hands-on training. Participants will learn how to set up\, analyze\, and visualize their own data in Nodegoat\, and reflect on how digital tools can enhance their research practices. \nWe welcome all PhD candidates and ReMA students interested in the challenges and opportunities of data management in the humanities\, whether you are new to digital research tools\, curious about how to organize your sources\, or already working with Nodegoat. \nPlease bring your own laptop.
