SUMMARY:Sebastian Conrad (FU Berlin)\, The Making of a Global Icon: Nefertiti’s 20th-Century Career
DESCRIPTION:Organized by DIA\, together with the Research Group Global Political Thought\, UvA \nNefertiti\, the queen of the 18th dynasty of ancient Egypt\, was the great royal wife of pharaoh Akhenaten. The discovery of her stucco coated limestone bust in 1912 marked the beginning of a global career as an iconic image\, used for a wide variety of purposes. The silhouette of this powerful Ancient Egyptian queen was admired around the world\, from National Socialists\, nationalists in Egypt and Bengal\, to prominent figures such as Elijah Muhammad and Beyoncé. Since Egypt unsuccessfully demanded its restitution\, it is still today a must-see museum piece of the New Museum in Berlin. Against a global backdrop\, Sebastian Conrad showcases the often-controversial issues and debates in which the bust of Nefertiti has been embroiled. He argues that its trajectory offers insights into the changing shape of globalization from the era of imperialism to the present day. \nMeer informatie en aanmelding.

SUMMARY:Summer School: Writing (Past) Empires as National Histories - Legacies of Colonialism and Violence in the Netherlands and Germany – in an international comparative context
DESCRIPTION:In 2025-2026\, the RSPH Summer School will focus on how historians have approached Dutch and German colonialism\, with particular attention to the interaction between historical narratives and contemporary societal and political engagements with colonial legacies. Central themes include experiences of violence\, systems of domination in international politics\, and the positionality of the historian: Who can—or should—write colonial history? Participants will also consider how national histories presented in schools and museums might incorporate the colonial past\, and what role states or societal groups should play in shaping (post)colonial identities. \nThe Summer School invites Research Master students to explore recent developments\, debates\, and dilemmas in the Netherlands and Germany\, and to place these in an international scholarly context. \nThe Summer School is organised alongside the 13th Association of Political History’s international conference\, ‘Dynamizing and Decentring Empires: A Recalibration of the History of the Political’\, which will take place immediately afterwards in Münster\, Germany. Participants are warmly encouraged to attend both events.

Maar in recent onderzoek benadrukken historici dat rechts terrorisme de Bondsrepubliek altijd al heeft begeleid – niet alleen tegenwoordig\, maar sinds het allereerste begin. Barbara Manthe laat aan de hand van een reeks voorbeelden zien hoe daders radicaliseerden en netwerken vormden. DESCRIPTION:met Farid Hafez (College of William & Mary\, VS)\, DIA\, together with the Research group Global Islam\, UvA \nIn his latest book on the governance of Islam in Austria and Germany\, Farid Hafez shows how the state aims to regulate and govern a racialized version of Islam and Muslims\, grounded in history.
